The village gossip was relentless.

Susan Miller had been kind-hearted in life, often helping everyone with work. Because she had no man, the villagers also looked after her.

The village gossip made me afraid to even leave the house lately. My wife's eyes were red and swollen all the time.

I looked closely—it was Mrs. Miller?

I was so scared I dropped my phone.

But I immediately picked it up. Why was I scaring myself? It was probably Mrs. Miller's family contacting me.

I answered the call. The other end said nothing.

I was already fired up about all this and unleashed a string of profanity.

They hung up.

Mrs. Miller's phone had been confiscated by the major crimes unit. Had they gotten a replacement SIM card?

Lana called out from the bedroom.

Not wanting to worry Lana, I forced a smile.

"Spam call."

Lana, wrapped in her robe, hugged me from behind.

"Don't overthink it. If you didn't do it, you didn't do it. Why be afraid of them?"
