The Widow's Secret Chapter 4
Mrs. Miller had three acres of fields. With my machine, it would take about two or three hours to finish.
"Jake, have some water."
When I reached the field ridge, Mrs. Miller handed me a bottle of mineral water. I was indeed very thirsty and gulped it down.
"Thanks, Mrs. Miller. It's already six o'clock. Let me hurry up and finish."
"Chug chug chug—"
The diesel engine roared loudly, but I didn't know that Mrs. Miller handing me water with a smile had been witnessed by someone hiding behind a haystack in the distance.
7:30 PM. The machine rumbled to a stop in the empty space in front of my house.
Mrs. Miller had already prepared a towel and mineral water.
"Thanks, Jake. After your Uncle David died, it's been hard for me as a woman to farm alone. Good thing the village looks after me."
I laughed. "Oh, Mrs. Miller, you're part of Wilsonville now. Even though Uncle David passed early, we're all your family, aren't we?"
"You sure have a way with words."
Mrs. Miller and I both laughed.
"How about you come have dinner at my place tonight? You've been working all day."
I quickly shook my head. Are you kidding? If I went to Mrs. Miller's for dinner, my wife would eat me alive!
"Look how scared you are. I already talked to Lana. You'll both come together."
"Huh?"
I really couldn't understand women's thinking. Mrs. Miller was fine—at her age, she wasn't as temperamental. But how did she convince Lana?
My head was full of questions.
