The Widow's Secret Chapter 13
"Wilson, there's no point in covering it up. Just come clean."
Lana and I were at Wilson's house. Wilson had also lost his wife in middle age. He was now 49 years old.
Lana tactfully turned on a hidden camera in case Wilson tried to frame them in desperation.
Wilson sighed, lit a hand-rolled cigarette, and took two deep drags.
"The case has nothing to do with me. Reporting it that day really was an accident. I was shocked by her condition too."
I pressed him.
"Why did you confess?"
Wilson pulled an envelope from his pocket.
"The reason is here. See for yourself."
The envelope had no writing on it.
Inside was a common sheet of paper with writing:
[Confess. Whether it works or not, ten thousand dollars in cash will appear at your house.]
Lana and I gasped.
This killer...
"So you see, I failed, and I didn't get the money either. These murderers are really something—even cheating old people!"
I was speechless. Using ten thousand dollars to get someone to confess? And not caring about the outcome.
Seemed like they wanted to distract the police.
"I've told you what you wanted to know. Don't tell anyone yet. If I still don't get the money in a few days, I'll go myself."
