The Widow's Secret Chapter 2
Mrs. Miller's house was at the edge of the village, about a kilometer from mine. Her husband had died out of town a year ago. I'd even donated a hundred dollars toward his coffin.
"Mrs. Miller, are you home?"
Mrs. Miller was the same generation as my father. Around here, we address people by generation.
"Oh, Jake, come in."
I plastered on a smile, carrying a case of milk as I followed Mrs. Miller into her yard.
"Um..."
After entering, Mrs. Miller didn't offer me a stool. She just naturally sat down herself while I stood there still holding the milk...
I considered myself well-liked in the village. Mrs. Miller must still be upset about my wife.
"Mrs. Miller, I'll just leave this here for you. I came to ask you something about what happened."
I forced a smile, suppressing the awkwardness.
Only then did Mrs. Miller bring me a stool to sit on.
"You're a good boy. I'll only say this once, whether you believe it or not is up to you."
"Lana is not a good person."
With that, Mrs. Miller went back into her room.
I stood alone in the yard, stunned. What... what did that mean?
Mrs. Miller was a widow—I couldn't very well follow her into her room. If word got around the village, Lana would kill me.
I dismissed Mrs. Miller's words as something said in anger after their conflict.
