The Widow's Secret Chapter 3

I went home.

Lana was still curled up in bed. The food tray in front of her was practically untouched.

"What are you doing? You're not even eating."

I couldn't help but say something.

Lana smiled at me. "Did you go see that bitch?"

I was completely confused.

"Do you believe me or her?"

Just one sentence completely threw me off, but I still chose to believe Lana.

Seeming satisfied with my answer, Lana began eating. I breathed a sigh of relief. Nothing serious had happened anyway—asking more questions would just bring unnecessary trouble.

The next several days were peaceful. Lana didn't cause any trouble, and Mrs. Miller dropped the charges against her. This actually improved my impression of Mrs. Miller.

After all, her cold attitude toward me that day was still fresh in my mind.

This season was rice seedling time in our area. Because I wanted to take it easy, my family had fairly complete farming equipment.

Precisely because of this, I was swamped every busy farming season. Villagers relied on my machinery to work their fields, which went against my plan to coast through life.

"Jake, Mrs. Miller's fields—could you help her out?"

Captain Wilson stood on the field ridge, looking somewhat embarrassed.

After all, everyone in the village knew about the bad blood between my wife and Mrs. Miller. But the widowed Mrs. Miller was someone the village looked after, and we had no other equipment.

"Well... Captain Wilson, okay. I'll make time this afternoon to plow her fields."

Wilson patted my shoulder and stuffed a hundred dollars into my pocket. "This is from the village."

I smiled and got the machine going again.
