The Widow's Secret Chapter 6
I continued working in the fields.
Maybe last night was too intense—today my back hurt. Lana had shown no mercy last night.
It was like it was our last night together.
But there was an upside—I slept like the dead and didn't wake up until eleven. Captain Wilson had to come wake me.
Wilson even warned me to show some restraint.
Ha! What does he know about being young?
Working in the fields, cigarette in my mouth, humming a tune—my wife and Mrs. Miller had resolved their issues. As a husband, naturally I was happy.
"Wee-ooh, wee-ooh, wee-ooh—"
Looking up, I saw Wilson approaching with two officers.
"Jake, come here for a minute."
Wilson called out to me.
I frowned, confused. I stopped the machine and walked over to Wilson.
"What's going on, Captain?"
I was worried—surely my wife didn't...
"Hello, Jake Wilson. I'm with the Springdale Police Department. We have a case that requires your cooperation."
The speaker was an officer I knew. This time his expression was very serious.
I looked at Wilson, baffled.
Wilson sighed.
"I went to call Susan Miller about picking up seeds just now. She's dead."
Instantly, my mind went blank.
"Mrs. Miller? Dead?"
