Silence fell over them like a thick blanket, his eyes closing as he held his mate's hand just a little bit tighter in his.

She was still suffering. Very much so. Even though he'd came for her as soon as he could, and he'd been trying so desperately to mend her back. To heal her with the comforting presence of his magic. His undying love. His soul. He would give her everything if he could. His very life. Just so that she could finally open those enchanting blue eyes of hers and look at him, even for one final time.

His brother's abrupt and cynical laugh suddenly filled the room, his stance though remaining calm and impassive as he lifted his gaze to regard him again.

"You seriously expect me to believe everything you just told me, just like that?" Nathan threw his hands up in the air, anger and annoyance resonating loud and clear in his tone.

He blew out a long and tired breath, mentally apologizing to his poor innocent mate before he simply let go of her hand for a moment.

That beeping machine immediately started to go crazy in response, incessantly squeaking with alarm now and outlining the very obvious way her lifeforce desperately sought for his.

He quickly took her hand back in his as he couldn't stand to make her suffer like that any longer, Nathan's eyes growing wide with utter shock and disbelief as he watched that machine swiftly return to normal, as if nothing happened.

"What the fuck!?!" He rather loudly exclaimed, making his older brother glare up at him in a scolding way. He was bothering Carina.

But Nathan didn't mind him, still reeling from the staggering shock. What...How the hell was that even possible?!?

"Both my wolf spirit and my magic are connected to her," Darius quietly answered his unspoken question, watching his little brother's expression become so broken, his green eyes reflecting nothing but pure hopelessness.

It pained him. It pained him so greatly, to see him like this. He hadn't intended for any of this to happen. He didn't mean to hurt him like this. But it was all out there now. And he was ready to face the consequences.

"Nate..." he uttered out, his heart constricting with agony at the sight of that look on his face.

Nathan's entire body shook from the onslaught of emotions, his breaths erratic and unsteady. His eyelids fluttered closed for a moment, fighting with all his might to rein himself in. Yet the fight was already lost. He could feel his wolf forcefully clawing his way out, little by little, so desperate to release that violent thunderstorm brewing up within him.

He was thirsting to hurt. Destroy.

His eyelids flew open, that unnatural golden in his eyes glowing fiercer than ever. He wanted blood. He wanted revenge. He wanted to howl at the Moon, voice out his pain.

_But...we could hurt her.._.his consciousness whispered back at him, his glowing eyes falling on the fragile being resting so peacefully on that bed that separated him from the one that he wanted to challenge to a fight to the death. Alpha to Alpha. His wolf held complete control over him now. Reason was lost to him, giving in to instinct. He wanted to protect his title, his mate. He wanted to eliminate the contender to his mate's heart, the competition. It didn't matter that this was his own brother. The one he'd mourned so greatly for. The Alpha essence running through his veins demanded it.

However...he didn't want to risk hurting her in the process. He was actually afraid of it.

So instead of rabidly pouncing on the other wolf occupying the room he took three fast strides and jumped straight through the window, landing on the soft grass outside with an audible thump before breaking into a crazy sprint in the direction of the forest.

His clothes were torn off of him as soon as he darted past the treeline, his wolf swiftly breaking free with a violent roar. He'd barely managed to contain him up until here. He was shaking. Brimming with fury. He was itching to go back and call his competitor out, challenge him to a fight. He wanted to tear into flesh, taste blood.

But that would've been his own sibling's blood. He would've torn into his brother's flesh.

_No..._

His snout rapidly shook from side to side, desperately trying to rid himself of that horrifying image that swiftly popped at the forefront of his mind.

_His beloved brother lifelessly resting in that open casket, all those ceaseless cries and mournful whispers surrounding him..._

_No..._

He continued to run faster and faster, his muscles working so strenuously as he fought to get away. Away from those thoughts. Away from them.

_"I...love you..."_

_"I lied...I lied to everybody, Nate..."_

One by one, those voices started to echo themselves in his head, replaying all those words they'd said to him. His mate, his brother...

_"She's my soulmate..."_

_"...I hate liars, remember?"_

No... He continued to push himself harder and harder, his overloading mind spiraling further and further down into that bottomless pit of mad despair and hopelessness.

_"Both my wolf spirit and my magic are connected to her..."_

No...He could hear his own laboured breaths and the furious pound of his heart, blood rushing into his ears as they started to ring. But he kept running.

_"I...love you..."_

_"She was my soulmate, Nate! I was meant to marry her and I betrayed our Goddess! I deceived fate!"_

_"...I don't care what it takes, you will marry that girl, do you understand, boy? We need her power! We need her bound to you!"_

_"...I hate liars, remember?"_

_"Nate..."_

_"I...love you..."_

Nooo!

He fluidly shifted back into human form with a mighty roar mid-air, his bare knees landing into the soft and leafy soil with a muffled thump.

And after a single shuddering breath, he let out a loud and earth-shattering cry, the trees shaking and the birds fleeing their nests with wild terror.

His muscled and powerful body trembled, a light sheen of sweat covering his skin as he lifelessly gazed at the leafy ground beneath him, his fingers digging into it.

One by one, his tears started to fall as that dam finally broke, letting his emotions overflow. All that pent-up anger...all that sadness and despair...

He felt...broken. Irreparably and utterly broken.
