There was no other way. William and Christina had agreed to play the role of a loving couple in public.

So, even though she was reluctant, Christina let him hold her hand until they left the preschool and got into the car. Christina sat in the back seat with Harper, finally feeling a bit of relief.

"But he's my best friend, so I kept comforting him, and then..."

As Harper animatedly recounted her day, Christina listened attentively, occasionally chiming in with a word or two.

Harper's need to share was satisfied, and her face and eyes were filled with happiness.

William, who was driving, noticed the scene in the back seat and couldn't help but smile.

"Harper, later Mommy is going to take you to meet a lady. She'll chat with you for a bit, okay?"

Harper's face showed some hesitation, but thinking about how gentle her mom was, she figured her mom's friend must be gentle too.

So she reluctantly nodded and agreed.

Seeing Harper's grown-up-like behavior, Christina couldn't help but laugh.

Harper was easy to please. As long as she could make a new friend, she believed anything.

They got out with Harper, and a gentle-looking woman in a white dress came out to greet them.

Christina laughed and teased, "Well, talk it over with your husband. Maybe you can have a daughter too. If it's a boy, we can arrange a little marriage with Harper."

Elara rolled her eyes and joked, "Boys are nothing compared to girls. I'm focused on my career right now. I'll think about kids in a few years."

Then she glanced at William with clear disdain, though she didn't say anything in front of Harper.

"I thought you had disappeared as a father. At least you showed up today to be with Harper."

William knew he had messed up, and even Elara didn't like him.

So he didn't explain, but said seriously, "I'll make it up to them. No matter what it takes, even if I can't be with Christina, as long as she's happy, I'll be satisfied."

William's earnest expression made Elara pause.

But she still huffed, "I hope so. Talk is cheap. Let's see some real action!"
