Rebirth: Mommy's Revenge Chapter 315: Two Extremes
"Elara, how's Harper doing now?"
Christina's face was filled with worry, eager to know Harper's current condition.
Although she had already gotten a general update from Elara over the phone, Elara's hesitant tone suggested there was more to the story.
This only made Christina more anxious, fearing something unexpected had happened.
"Look at you, so worried. Relax."
Elara took Christina's hand, gently reassuring her, "Harper fell asleep while waiting for you. She's resting in the bedroom upstairs. Why don't you come in first?"
Christina let out a small sigh of relief and nodded.
The two followed Elara into the living room of the villa.
Elara poured two glasses of water and handed them to Christina and William.
When Christina could no longer contain her anxiety, Elara finally began to explain Harper's situation.
"Harper is doing okay. Besides what I told you on the phone, there are some things that are better discussed in person."
Elara's expression was serious as she spoke.
Christina and William both tensed up, their faces showing their concern.
"But don't worry too much. Although Harper isn't completely cured, there has been some improvement."
"After Jennifer took Harper, we don't know exactly what happened, but she later encountered that woman you mentioned, Thora."
"I don't know much about Thora. You should try to find out more about her. Understanding her background might help with Harper's treatment."
Elara's gaze fell on William, and she couldn't help but scoff.
"I have a feeling she's up to no good, probably has her eyes on you!"
"If it weren't for you, Harper wouldn't be in this situation. You better figure out everything about her and stop getting involved with suspicious women!"
William gave a bitter smile.
He wanted to find out more about Thora too, but she was so mysterious. Despite his efforts, the private investigator he hired couldn't uncover much about her.
If it were that easy, he wouldn't be so anxious.
"It's my fault. I'm sorry."
He apologized immediately, "I won't let any suspicious people near me, Harper, or Christina again..."
"Enough with the apologies."
Elara interrupted impatiently, rolling her eyes.
"Save that for Christina. If apologies worked, Harper wouldn't still be undergoing treatment!"
William knew Elara had a lot of grievances against him, so he didn't argue and nodded in agreement.
"You're right. I'll do whatever it takes to help Harper and Christina."
William's sincere attitude finally softened Elara's expression a bit.
She huffed and then took Christina's hand, seriously explaining Harper's care instructions.
"Christina, I need to explain Harper's situation clearly. When she wakes up tomorrow and you take her home, you must be careful, okay?"
The more serious Elara was, the more nervous Christina became.
"Okay, I'm listening."
Elara nodded and shot a glance at William.
"And you, listen carefully too!"
William nodded helplessly.
"Harper's condition is somewhat stable now. As long as she doesn't see anything related to her past, especially Thora, she won't be triggered."
"Also, don't mention Thora at all. Pretend that part of her memory doesn't exist. Over time, it won't affect her as much."
Elara took a deep breath.
"The most important thing is whether Harper can recall that period. The outcome will be one of two extremes."
Christina tensed up, blurting out, "What are the two extremes?"
"The good outcome is that she accepts what happened and understands it, leading to her recovery."
"And the bad outcome?"
Christina's voice was trembling, fearing the worst for Harper.
Harper was so young to go through all this.
Was this some kind of punishment for changing her life?
But even if it was, it shouldn't fall on a child!
"Christina, you need to stay hopeful. Harper has always been positive and optimistic. The outcome depends on her mindset."
"Even in the worst case, it would just cause some confusion in her memory. We can start over and treat her slowly. She will be cured eventually."
Elara's words were both comforting and factual.
Christina, though reluctant, nodded lightly.
"Okay, I'll do my best."
Even if not for herself, she had to do it for Harper.
Besides, Harper had always been a little ray of sunshine. Even if an extreme outcome occurred, it would surely be the good one.
Thinking this, Christina regained her spirits and smiled at Elara.
"Elara, thank you so much for everything. I don't know what I would have done without you."
"Oh, stop it! I hate hearing your thanks!"
Elara put her hands on her hips, pretending to be angry, "We've been friends for so many years, and you're still so polite!"
"If you keep this up, I won't help you anymore. You can find someone else to take care of Harper!"
Seeing Elara genuinely upset, Christina quickly shut her mouth.
"Alright then."
After a pause, Christina remembered something, "By the way, you just got back from abroad and have been helping with Harper. You probably haven't had a proper rest."
"How about we have dinner together tomorrow when I pick up Harper? It's been so long since we had a meal together."
Elara had returned from abroad a week ago and took Harper five days ago to start treatment.
Thinking about how Elara had been taking care of Harper, even though Harper was easy to handle, it still required effort.
Even though Christina considered Elara family, she felt bad for troubling her so much.
She also wanted to catch up with her best friend after all these years.
"Sure!"
Elara agreed with a smile, then glanced at William with a hint of mischief.
"Some people will have to step aside. In Christina's heart, besides Harper, I'm number one!"
Christina sighed and looked at William.
William, looking a bit helpless, saw the two women together and sensibly offered, "I see you two have a lot to talk about. I'll leave you to it."
"Yes, go on, leave!"
Elara waved him off impatiently, her expression full of disdain.
"I really don't want to see you. You just make me angry!"
If William had cared about Christina, she wouldn't have suffered so much with Jennifer.
Even if William had changed, he couldn't be easily forgiven!
Despite Elara's disdain, William didn't mind and looked at Christina.
Sensing his gaze, Christina turned away, unwilling to meet his eyes.
Feeling a pang of sadness, William knew staying would only make Christina more uncomfortable.
He sighed, said nothing more, and left.
After William left, Elara hugged Christina's waist, snuggling close like a child.
"Christina, I missed you so much!"
Seeing Elara act like a child, Christina couldn't help but laugh, teasing her, "You're a grown woman, married, and still acting like a kid. Aren't you being childish?"
"I don't care, I want to be childish!"
Elara pouted, "Some men are so clueless. I thought you'd understand me, but you're laughing at me too!"
Christina immediately understood and, holding back her laughter, said, "I bet someone upset you again, right?"
"Don't mention my boyfriend. I came back to relax, and I don't want any men bothering me except for you and Harper!"
Seeing Elara's righteous stance, Christina could only agree with her best friend.
"Alright, no one will bother you. Just me and Harper."
"That's more like it!"
Elara huffed, then glanced at Christina.
Seeing Christina's mood unaffected, Elara smiled.
"By the way, William seems to care about you. What's going on between you two?"
Before Christina could answer, Elara added angrily, "But he only realized it after losing you. Christina, make sure he learns his lesson!"
Elara's words made Christina laugh, clearing her mind.
She couldn't help but chuckle.
"Don't worry, there's no chance for us."
Christina shook her head, her voice firm and serious.
"I won't forgive him for what he did."
"We're only civil for Harper's sake."
