Darkness Chapter 35: Breaking Dawn

We had finally resolved one issue, only to be faced with another dilemma: what to do about Tara. I found myself torn between turning her over and keeping her with us. Vincent had reached out to Peter, informing him that they needed to have a discussion, and Peter was expected to arrive shortly.

"How do you think he's going to react?" I asked Vincent.

Vincent shrugged, "I have no idea. I believe he will be shocked, but a natural-born vampire is a rare and precious gift even if it is a halfling."

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Peter entered, looking curious. "What's going on? Why did you need to see me?"

"Do you remember the girl Alec was involved with?" Vincent inquired.

Peter nodded, "Yes, she was quite attractive. What about her?"

"Did you two... engage in any activities when they first arrived?" Vincent asked cautiously.

Peter nonchalantly replied, "Yes, we did. So what?"

I couldn't help but smile, and Vincent smirked. "Well, she's pregnant."

I gaze at Peter's face, watching as he processes the shocking news Vincent has just delivered. Peter shakes his head in disbelief. "I highly doubt that the one time I slept with her could have resulted in her pregnancy," he mutters.

Vincent meets his gaze, his expression serious. "It did. Alec has confirmed that it's not physically possible for him to be the father. That leaves you as the only other vampire who has fucked her."

Peter considers the possibility. "He could be lying," he suggests.

Vincent shakes his head firmly. "I trust Alec with my life. If he says it's not possible, I believe him."

Peter lets out a resigned sigh. "Well, then take me to see my Breeder."

Confusion crosses my face. "What do you mean?"

Peter locks eyes with me, his tone chilling. "If she can bear children for us, I'll simply put her to work. I have a cell waiting for her with her name on it."

I issue a warning. "You do realize she's a trained killer and won't go down without a fight."

Peter chuckles darkly. "I'll collar her ass. Besides, she's not as innocent as she seems. She enjoyed us fucking. I believe she secretly desires us but is too afraid to admit it."

"I believe she has manipulated you. You need to be cautious," I warned Peter.

Peter dismisses my concern with a shake of his head. "That's not possible."

I attempt to reason with him, despite my dislike for him. "Until now, I considered us best friends. She betrayed me, leaving me for dead. If she can deceive me, she can deceive you as well."

Peter concedes, "You make a valid point, pet."

Annoyed, I snap back, "Do not address me in such a manner!" I move to attack him, but Vincent restrains me.

"Darling, calm down. He was only trying to provoke a reaction from you," Vincent reassures me.

Peter exclaims, "She's incredibly fucking fast!"

Vincent laughs. “You're just lucky I was quicker this time or she'd have kicked your ass.”

“Why should I believe you?” he mockingly asks.

I glare at him. “Next time he won't save your ass.”

We get up and walk to the cells. Tara is curled up in the corner of the cell with her knees pulled to her chest. “Tara.”

“I have nothing to say to you,” she spits. I guess she's still upset about Aaron. He never wanted her because he said as much. She should be more worried about herself than a pile of useless ash.

“Aww. Don't give a shit. Your Baby Daddy is here and wants to talk to you.” I smirk at Peter, who gives me a death look and then turns his attention to Tara, who looks scared.

“What's he doing here?” she asks.

“He wanted to talk to you,” Vincent says flatly.

“Not sure why but…” I shrug.

“You're a bitch, you know. You always have been. I have no idea how I put up with you all those years or why any man would want you,” Tara spats.

“Yeah, and here I thought you were my friend. I'm the fool for thinking that, so I hope you enjoy your new life.”

Tara replies, “You're letting me go.”

Peter laughs. “Oh, hell no. You will be used to breed vampire babies, Breeder. Can you guys keep her till I can get her suitable accommodations?”

Vincent nods. “Sure. I also wanted to talk…”

My head began to swim. “Vincent ...I'm not feeling well...I…” Everything goes dark.
