The Alpha's Secret Mate Chapter 39: Coffee
Adam's Pov
The hot shower was exactly what I needed after the long, stressful day. As the near-scalding water cascaded over my sore muscles, I could feel the knots in my shoulders beginning to loosen. I took my time, letting the heat relax every inch of tension. After nearly falling asleep standing up, I finally shut off the water and stepped out into the billowing steam.
Reaching for a plush navy towel, I dried off briskly before throwing on my go-to post-work outfit of worn-in sweats and a soft t-shirt. Just changing into comfortable clothes made me feel infinitely better. Ready to fully unwind, I took a deep breath and opened the bathroom door.
Immediately, the tantalizing aromas of a home-cooked dinner enveloped me. Mabel was in the kitchen, swaying gently to the radio as she pulled a bubbling casserole dish from the oven. She looked up when I entered, her gorgeous hazel eyes lighting up.
"Perfect timing," she said with a smile. "Dinner's ready when you are."
I settled into my seat at our small round dining table as Mabel began dishing up hearty portions onto our plates. She had made chicken alfredo, my favorite comfort food. I breathed in the savory scent of tender chicken and mushrooms swirling with the creamy pasta. My stomach rumbled loudly in anticipation.
We dug in eagerly, both famished. The alfredo was utter perfection - the chicken moist and flavorful, the pasta cooked just right with a decadent sauce coating each bite. With every mouthful, I could feel my stress melting away.
Across from me, Mabel asked about my day as she twirled more pasta onto her fork. I launched into a full vent session between bites. I complained about my tyrannical boss, the entitled customers, the endless stream of problems only I could fix. Mabel listened thoughtfully, her compassionate eyes encouraging me to let it all out.
By the time I had polished off every bite of food, I felt infinitely better. There was something so cathartic about unpacking the day with Mabel. She had a gift for comforting me even when she didn't have to say much. Just having her there, her presence soothing my frazzled nerves, was everything I needed.
After dinner, I reluctantly pushed back my chair, knowing I had to squeeze in a few more hours of work. Mabel began clearing the table as I stood.
"Go take care of what you need to," she said, giving my arm a supportive squeeze. "I'll be right here when you're ready for bed."
I smiled gratefully, my heart swelling with love for my incredibly understanding partner. Before hunkering down in my home office, I paused to take Mabel in my arms, holding her close. "Thank you," I murmured into her hair.
With renewed motivation, I made my way down the hall and settled into my desk chair. I flipped open my laptop, sighing at the avalanche of unread emails awaiting me. The low hum of Mabel loading the dishwasher down the hall was oddly comforting as I buckled down to work. Having her presence nearby made even the most tedious tasks feel less arduous.
As the night wore on, I struggled to keep my heavy eyelids open. The words on the screen blurred together as I battled exhaustion. But I was determined to power through, to check every last item off my endless to-do list before I could let myself rest.
I knew I desperately needed coffee if I was going to make it through this final stretch. But just as I started to push myself up from my desk, there was a soft knock at the door. I opened it to find Mabel holding out a steaming mug, a sympathetic smile on her face.
"Thought you could use. coffee with a smile on face," she said.
Overcome with gratitude, I took the mug as the rich aroma of fresh-brewed coffee enveloped me. I held it close, letting the heat seep into my hands. Taking a tentative sip, I tasted the bold roast with just the right amount of cream, perfectly made just how I loved it. The smooth flavor jolted through me, instantly reenergizing my foggy brain.
"You are genuinely the best, you know that?" I said.
Mabel waved off the compliment with an adorably modest expression. After a quick kiss on the cheek, she headed back down the hall to let me return to work. I watched her go, thinking not for the first time how incredibly lucky I was.
Settling back into my desk chair, I continued sipping the coffee as I powered through the remaining tasks. The caffeine rush helped me stay focused on the last few reports I needed to revise. Finally, miraculously, my to-do list was complete. I closed my laptop with a tired but satisfied sigh, more than ready for bed.
Moving quietly down the hall so as not to wake Mabel, I cautiously peered into the darkened bedroom. But despite the late hour, she was still awake, propped up with a book. She glanced up as I entered, flashing a warm smile that melted my insides.
I slid under the smooth cotton sheets and Mabel set her novel aside. She curled up against me, resting her head on my chest. I wrapped both arms around her, enveloping her in my embrace. Her familiar floral scent and the warmth of her body against mine were just what I needed to unwind and forget the stresses of the day.
With Mabel here, it took no time at all for me to feel myself start to drift off. But just as sleep approached, nagging thoughts about unfinished tasks and early meetings began filtering back into my overtired brain. I shifted restlessly, willing my mind to just shut off so I could rest.
Sensing my tossing and turning, Mabel began softly running her fingers through my hair. "Shh, just sleep," she whispered soothingly. "Everything will look better in the morning."
The tender reassurance in her voice instantly settled me. Under her delicate touch, the tension melted from my body. Focusing on her steady breathing next to me, I finally sank into a deep and peaceful sleep.
