The Alpha's Secret Mate Chapter 45: Mabel's call
Adam's Pov
The moment I walked back into my office, I collapsed into my chair and dropped my head into my hands. My mind was still spinning from the lunch with Mabel at Rosie's. Seeing her so shaken and scared had every protective instinct in me on high alert.
A soft knock came at my door before Emma peeked her head in hesitantly. "Everything okay, Mr. Black?"
I scrubbed a hand down my face before giving her a tight smile. "Yeah, I'm alright. Just a stressful lunch."
Emma stepped fully into the office, concern etched on her face. "Did something happen? You seem really upset..."
I debated deflecting, but found myself admitting, "It's Mabel. She was rattled by some driver who went after her aggressively. I can't stop thinking something bad could have happened. to her"
"Oh no, that's awful! Is she okay?" Emma asked.
"Physically, yes, thank goddess. But she was terrified. I've never seen her like that." I clenched my fists just recalling Mabel's trembling embrace.
Emma nodded sympathetically. "I can imagine how scary that must have been for her. For both of you really."
"I just wish I'd been there," I said roughly, the helplessness hitting me again. "Instead, all I can do now is try to figure out who the hell did this so I can make sure they never go near her again."
"I know you'll keep her safe, Mr. Black. Mabel's so lucky to have you looking out for her." Emma gave an encouraging smile before adding more hesitantly, "Do you...have any idea who it could be yet?"
I shook my head grimly. "No, but when I find them, there will be hell to pay."
Emma paled a little at the cold fierceness in my tone, but quickly collected herself. "Of course. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help get to the bottom of this. I should get back to my desk now."
"Thanks, Emma," I said with a grateful look. After she left, I picked up my cell phone, scrolling to Elias's number. My elite group leader, could use their help to start investigating immediately.
Elias answered on the second ring. "Adam, everything alright?"
"No, it's not," I bit out. "Someone just went after Mabel in broad daylight. We need to meet tonight.
"
Shocked silence met my terse announcement before Elias responded grimly, "Understood. The safehouse at sundown."
Ending the call, I mentally prepared for the difficult conversation ahead with Elias and the others. It was time to launch a full investigation into who was behind this attack on Mabel, and to carefully evaluate our next steps for keeping her safe.
I wouldn't be able to rest or focus on anything else until I had answers and a solid plan to protect my mate. The wolf inside me was raging too violently at the threat to its cherished partner.
For now, I had to keep up a business-as-usual facade at the office until I could meet with my warriors. But the clock couldn't move fast enough as I forced my way through endless meetings. All I wanted was to be back home with Mabel.
Finally escaping as dusk approached, I drove directly home, desperate to check on her. Inside, I found Mabel seated at the kitchen table, blankly staring down at an untouched mug of tea. Her reddened eyes snapped up at my entrance.
In two quick strides, I was across the room and pulling her into my arms. "Are you alright? Why are you still awake, did anything else happen after I left?"
Mabel shook her head against my chest, but her fingers clutched at my shirt tightly. "No, nothing else. I just kept feeling so jumpy all day." And I just could not fall asleep.
"I'm so sorry I couldn't stay with you. But that's going to change now, I promise. We're going to figure this out together."
Mabel nodded, some tension leaving her body at my reassuring words. As much as it pained me, I reluctantly had to leave her again to meet Elias and start making real plans for her protection.
Before I slipped out, cuddle Mabel till she falls asleep.
I kissed her brow, Gently, I nudged her onto the bed and pulled up a cover. She curled into it tight before letting out an exhausted sigh, already half asleep. Knowing that she was safe and taken care of for now
I relaxed a bit.
I caressed her face while she drifted off, whispering words of love and promises of safety over and over again until she was fast asleep. Finally content that she would be alright, I blew her a kiss goodbye and left the room to meet Elias.
My heart was heavy but my mind was focused as I set off on a mission to make sure Mabel would never have to worry about her safety again. Whatever it took, I'd do whatever it takes to make sure of this.
I glanced back once more into the room before I closed the door, my heart aching with love for Mabel. Taking a deep breath, I set my jaw and swore I would do whatever it took to protect her.
With that promise in my heart, I stepped out into the night, i will do whatever it takes. Never again would Mabel have to fear anything lurking in the shadows around us.
As I walked down toward my garage , i brought out my phone from my pocket and called Elias.
