The Alpha's Secret Mate Chapter 48: intruders in Damien's house
Damien's POv
I jolted awake, senses screaming danger. The intrusive scent of unfamiliar wolves permeated my apartment. I quickly counted three distinct scents - they were trying to be stealthy, but my wolf could detect them creeping through the shadows.
Urgently, I mind-linked my sister Rachel. "Rach, listen very carefully. There are intruders in the apartment. Use the hidden exit now and run to Adam. Contact no one else."Intruders inside! Take the hidden exit and run, now!
"Rachel's panicked thoughts responded instantly. "Wait, what's happening?"
"No questions, just run! Get somewhere safe!" I ordered.
I heard her door crash open as she fled down the hall. Praying she made it out, my focus shifted wholly to the deadly threat at hand. I had no illusions about my odds against three rivals. But I would fight to my last breath.
Bracing for the attack, I summoned my wolf's vicious fury. These bastards had picked the wrong den to target tonight. I would tear their treacherous throats
My bedroom door suddenly splintered inwards and the breath was ripped from my lungs by a lightning bolt of agony. I glanced down incredulously at the silver arrow piercing my shoulder, the poison spreading like wildfire through my veins.
"Silver? You damn coward," I spat viciously, struggling to remain on my feet as the room spun around me.
A cruel smile curled the leader's lip as he approached my hunched form. "Bold words from someone about to die. Any last words?
Summoning the last of my strength, I lunged with clawed hands. I managed to rake my fingers down his face before two sets of hands seized me, dragging me to my knees. The gleaming blade pressed to my throat stilled my resistance.
"Make it quick then," I gritted out, glaring defiantly into the hate-filled eyes of my rival pack's assassins. I would give them no sick satisfaction of seeing me beg.
The leader smirked, drawing it out as my pulse sputtered weakly. But just as he tensed to deliver the death strike, a cell phone shrilly interrupted the moment.
Cursing, he withdrew the blade from my throat to check the message. His smug expression morphed into a scowl. Eyes flashing furiously to me, he pressed the wet blade to my heaving chest instead.
"Seems you get a reprieve...for now at least." He leaned in close, his hot breath on my face. "But rest assured, we will finish this very soon."With that ominous threat lingering, shadows engulfed me as a blow to my skull stole consciousness. But my last desperate thoughts were only of Rachel out there somewhere, fleeing blindly into the darkness...
Rachel's POV
took off at a dead run the second I cleared the hidden exit, my wolf propelling me forward with impossible speed. Damien's dire warning echoed relentlessly inside my head, drowning out all rational thought. I had one objective only—get somewhere safe.
Each pounding stride took me further from the nightmare erupting back in our formerly secure home. A barrage of terrified questions screamed through my mind.
What was happening to Damien now? Who were the violent intruders who had somehow bypassed all our safeguards? Why were they attacking us? But there was no time for answers now.
I fled through a maze of deserted side streets and alleyways, using my wolf's advanced senses to detect potential threats. But strangely, there was no indication that I had been pursued.
Only when my legs finally gave out did I duck into a 24-hour coffee shop to desperately catch my breath, scanning the sparse patrons for hidden enemies. But again, nothing seemed amiss. At least for the moment, I appeared to have made it out unseen.
Reality finally began to sink in as I sank unsteadily into a shadowed booth. Something catastrophic had occurred back there tonight. I prayed Damien had somehow also managed to escape, though my sinking gut whispered otherwise.
For now, I was stranded alone with no resources or defenses. I couldn't safely make contact without potentially exposing my location. But one chilling thought consumed all else—I hope Damien is still alive? I dared not imagine!.
Shivering violently in the aggressively bright lights, I could only wrap my arms around myself and sip my untouched tea as the minutes crawled by at an agonizing pace. I knew I couldn't linger here indefinitely. But venturing back out into the hostile darkness was a terrifying prospect when I had no destination or allies to run to.
For now, I could only hunker down in my hidden corner and watch the entrance obsessively for any sign of pursuit through the long nightmarish hours ahead. My fragile safety felt all too temporary, the coming dawn drenched in menace.
I needed to reach Adam. Being the former pack Alpha, he had the resources to ensure my safety until Damien identified the intruders who had invaded our home. Fear gripped my gut as I dashed through dimly lit streets. What if is already too late and the intruders reached Damien before me? No, I couldn't entertain such thoughts. My priority was to locate Adam. He would have the answers and know how to handle the current situation.
