The Alpha's Secret Mate Chapter 47: my elite group
Adam's Pov
I slowly eased myself out of bed, taking extra care not to disturb Mabel's fitful sleep. The poor thing had only just drifted off after the incredibly stressful ordeal she had faced today. Every protective bone in my body screamed to just stay right there and continue keeping vigil over her. But unfortunately, I really needed to slip away for a bit to make some urgent phone calls to get top-tier security set up for Mabel as soon as humanly possible.
As gently and soundlessly as I could manage, I slid out from under the covers and tucked them back around Mabel's sleeping form. She looked so fragile and exhausted that it made my chest ache. I resisted the urge to brush back her hair and place one more soft kiss on her forehead before I left. I didn't want to risk waking her when she so clearly needed uninterrupted rest right now.
I crept downstairs on high alert, reflexively checking the shadows for anything amiss. Satisfied that the house was still secured, I grabbed my phone and keys off the kitchen counter before making my way out to the garage. The chill night air raised goosebumps on my skin as I lowered myself into the sleek leather driver's seat of my prized Bugatti. I turned the key in the ignition,
I pulled up the number of one of my most trusted elite group members , Kane, he is second in command to Elias, as I sped into the night. He answered on the second ring.
“As he picked up, Kane” I said , “I need round of clock security on Mabel, effective immediately. Handpick them yourself, only our best.”
“Understood,” Kane responded. There were no questions or hesitation. We both are both aware of the gravity of the situation after today’s attack.
“I want eyes on the house from all angles,” I continued. “And two men in the shadows her anywhere at all time, close but out of sight. Take all necessary precautions.”
“Consider it done. I’ll have a team in place within the hour,” Kane assured me.
I exhaled slowly, some of the roiling tension easing now that I knew Mabel would be protected. After ending the call, I pressed harder on the gas, devouring more miles of shadowy road as I headed to safehouse to meet with the others. We had contingency plans to enact.
Whipping around a tight bend, my headlights briefly illuminated a car parked on the shoulder up ahead. I dismissed it as abandoned until suddenly its lights flared on, blindingly bright in my rearview mirror.
My eyes narrowed as the car pulled out to follow, staying dangerously close on my tail. No passing motorist behaved like that out here. I was being followed.
I shoved the accelerator down, tires screeching in protest as I pulled away sharply. But incredibly, the pursuing car matched my velocity, regaining lost ground. Who the hell was this?
As the road straightened, I watched for an opportunity to really flex the Bugatti’s muscles. At my first opening, I floored it, blurring by the shadowy trees in a dark streak. Finally I lost sight of the headlights behind me.
Just as I began to relax, an SUV came roaring up from nowhere to intercept me. I swerved wildly, narrowly escaping a collision as the SUV just brushed against my side with an ear splitting squeal before accelerating past me.
What little paint had transferred was as black as the vehicle itself. No license plate, windows heavily tinted. My heart thundered as their taillights disappeared into the night. Sloane’s people were out in force it seemed.
I pressed onward, emotions seesawing between rage and unease. I kept glancing behind me, certain I was being tracked, my senses on high alert. But the road remained empty all the way to the safehouse.
My team waited inside, grim purpose etched on their faces. I quickly updated them on the anonymous aggressors I’d encountered en route. Jaws tightened at this additional confirmation we were running out of time.
“Sloane’s no longer hiding in shadows,” Elias bit out. “He’s moving to open warfare.”
I nodded tersely. “Then we retaliate in kind. I want round-the-clock surveillance on him too. Isolate his network and start squeezing the weak links. Get me something I can use to rip his operation apart from the inside.”
No arguments or hesitation greeted my words. We were united by the promise of vengeance now for Mabel and countless others at risk. I would tear this corrupted pack down to its roots and stems if necessary to protect her and my pack.
Strategizing concluded, we went our separate ways to prepare for the battles ahead. Sloane had struck the first blow, but the true fight was only just beginning. And with my team’s might combined with my own ruthless determination, we would be the ones left standing when the smoke finally cleared.
I was under no illusions - there would be more provocations, more blood spilled before the end. But I would willingly walk through hellfire if it meant I could finally promise Mabel she was safe again. And I would raze anyone to the ground who tried to threaten that safety. This was only the start.
Exhaustion pulled at me as I finally returned home close to dawn. But waking to find Mabel sleeping fitfully, brow creased with distress even unconscious, reignited the roaring protectiveness within. I wrapped myself around her, holding on tightly.
No matter how high the odds were stacked against us, giving up was never an option when it came to Mabel. And now she had my inner circle’s formidable might to call on as well. Together we would shield her.
As she gradually relaxed into a deeper sleep in the security of my arms, I kept planning our next moves. I wouldn't rest until Sloane and his whole sadistic network were nothing but terrible memories. Mabel deserved that much and so much more.
