David POV

I really wanted to be wrong about him after all these years together, I didn’t think he would ever betray me. Not Jonathan. Not after everything. I thought that after his mother died the way she did he would know how important trust is. Loyalty. Survival. Those were things I taught him myself. A small part of me hurts for leaving him for dead but he was working with the enemy, and that means his loyalty was no longer to me. I gave him years and he threw them away for her. For them.

How did he get him to turn? What did he say to him? What made Jonathan choose Cole over me?

I pace my office thinking of my next move. I lost control of the bears, but I still have the witch and I still have her. That thought settles something ugly inside me. She is set to give birth soon which means I might be able to get her to unlock the magic still or just use her powers for my personal gain. I still have a chance of making all of this still work for me. I didn’t come this far to lose now.

I need to see her.

I walk out of my office and I walk down to her room. It’s quiet in there and she could be sleeping. She’s been sleeping more than I thought possible for anyone. Pregnancy looks good on her. Softens her. Makes her even prettier. I knock and I don’t get a response. I slowly open her door and she’s laid on her side only in a bra and panties her belly on full display and the sight has my dick hard instantly.

Fuck she doesn’t even need to be awake to make me want her.

Cole doesn’t deserve such a beautiful creature. Doesn’t deserve the goddess carrying his children. I can’t wait to fuck her senseless, the way her body was responding when I tied her to the bed was beautiful. The sounds she made haven’t left my head since.

I step out and close the door before I do something I might regret. Not yet. Soon.

“Henry I need you to get in touch with the witch and tell her we need to meet as soon as possible” I link him.

“Yes Alpha” he links back.

I need to find a new Beta, I can’t believe I had to kill Jonathan I really hoped he wasn’t a traitor. I would have trusted him with anything.

I head up to my room.

“Meet me in my room” I link Ivana.

“Yes Alpha” she links back.

I start thinking about Lyric’s swollen belly and how beautiful she just looked and I’m hard and ready to go. Soon I can stop imagining having her and pretending Ivana is her. Soon I will have the real thing. Soon she will wear my mark and not his. Soon she’ll stop acting like she’s trapped here and realize I’m the one giving her everything and she’ll stop fighting what’s inevitable.

Lyric POV

I wake up with a strong sense of dread, something bad is either going to happen today or already did. The feeling sits heavy in my chest before my eyes even fully open. Lately my visions have been unpredictable or nonexistent in regards to danger. That scares me more than the visions themselves ever did.

A knock comes at the door before Rhea slides in with a look of worry on her face.

“What’s wrong?” I ask bracing myself for her answer. My hand immediately goes to my stomach without thinking.

“Seraphina said Jonathan didn’t come back with David last night.”

My heart starts beating rapidly and the panic begins to build in my chest slow and heavy. No. No. No.

“Okay so does she think he did something to him?” I ask trying to calm my nerves but with David I just don’t expect anything good.

“She said she called his phone but no answer, she can’t feel him through the bond” She says softly.

“David figured him out” Nova says in my mind.

“I was hoping he wouldn’t until after we got out” I say to her. Because Jonathan getting caught changes everything.

“Where is she now?” I ask.

She doesn’t speak for a moment as if contemplating if she should tell me.

“She’s packing to leave and then go look for him” she says.

“Wait she is trying to leave? Now?!” I whisper yell. My pulse spikes instantly because this cannot fall apart right now. Not when we are this close.

She puts her head down “I’m sorry Luna” she says.

“Don’t. Just go get her and bring her here before David makes his entrance” I say.

She nods and then rushes out the door.

“How can she think about leaving me right now, when tomorrow is the day?” I say out loud. Tomorrow was supposed to be the end of this.

“She’s scared, she’s already hiding here Lyric and now her mate is missing” Nova says.

“I get that but Jonathan is smart and has royal blood if David tried to kill him he could have been unsuccessful” I say.

“And if he was dead she would feel it, we know that” I say. I cling to that harder than I probably should.

“She just needs to calm down and stick to the plan” I say trying to calm my nerves before they get back. Because if one thing goes wrong everything falls apart.

When they walk into the room her eyes are bloodshot from crying.

“Seraphina we are so close” I say.

“I know Lyric but he’s not answering” she replies. Her voice sounds wrecked already.

“I know but that could mean anything” I assure her.

“Please don’t freak out on me, now that Jonathan is MIA I only have you, Rhea and Lydia to get me and my pups out tomorrow” I say. And saying it out loud makes everything feel far too fragile.

“I know Lyric and I’m sorry” She responds.

“You don’t need to apologize, he isn’t dead you would have felt that” I say just as a frantic knock starts at the door.

Rhea runs to open it and Josh rushes in.

“Okay I don’t have much time, David is on edge. The bear King is dead and Howling Moon was waiting when we got there, all the bears retreated mid fight and we had to retreat. David had two warriors grab Jonathan and David stabbed him 11 times with a silver knife” he says talking fast chest rising quickly.

Seraphina drops to her knees as she cries out in agony. The sound tears through the room so hard my chest aches with it.

“He isn’t dead though, I don’t know where he is but he’s alive” He adds quickly.

Her head snaps up.

“Are you sure?” I ask him. I need him to be sure.

“Yes Luna I’m sure he isn’t dead” he replies.

“I have to go, please be careful because he is looking to come here soon” he says slipping out as fast as he came in.

“I need to eat and you need to go” I say looking at Seraphina. If David walks in and sees her like this he’ll know something happened.

I grab her hands.

“He is okay, he will find you when all of this is over I promise” I say trying to settle her and convince us both because I can’t afford for her to fall apart when we are so close to this being over.

They both leave and a few minutes later David walks in. He smiles warmly at me. That smile almost makes my skin crawl now because I know exactly what’s sitting behind it.

This man really thinks I’m his mate.

“Good morning my Luna, How are you and my pups this morning?” he asks walking over and kissing me.

I place my hand on my belly and smile. “We are fine my love, they are ready to come out and I am ready for them” I say. The lie comes easier now and I hate that.

He smiles and cups my cheek. “I am too, have you eaten yet?” he asks.

“Rhea should be back any minute now with my breakfast, are you staying to eat with me?” I ask.

He frowns. “I’m sorry mate I have things to take care of, we had a traitor amongst us and I need to deal with things now” he says.

Jonathan. He knows. He definitely knows.

I feign hurt and pout at him. “You said you would spend more time with me and all you have done is keep me locked up David, this feels like prison not home” I say trying to sound hurt and disappointed.

He sits next to me on the bed and places me in his lap. He places light kisses on my shoulder and it takes all my strength to not show my disgust. Every touch makes my stomach twist harder.

Nova growls low in my mind.

“I know love but I’m working on that now, so that when the pups come I am all yours and theirs” he says.

I sigh heavy just as Rhea walks in and stops short.

“Oh I’m sorry Alpha I didn’t mean to interrupt” she says meekly.

“Oh no worries Rhea, your Alpha was just leaving” I say moving off of his lap and he stands sighing heavily.

“Love just give me a few days and it will all be over” He says.

A few days. He still thinks he has time.

“I no longer want to talk, I’m hungry” I say walking to the table in the room.

He sucks his teeth and kisses me before walking out of the room without another word.

I immediately grab a napkin and wipe my mouth. “I can’t wait for all of this to be over” I say.

Before I can even sit down a loud explosion is heard outside and the entire room shakes.

Rhea looks at me eyes wide with fear.

Something is wrong and one way or another, I need to make sure my pups and I are far away from here.

I grip my belly. “Rhea we need to get out of this room” I say as another explosion goes off.

My ears begin ringing as growls and snarls can be heard outside. Not distant. Close. Too close.

Whatever is happening is giving me the perfect opportunity to run, and I am going to run like hell. Because if Cole is here, I need to get to him before this place burns to the ground around us.
