Logan Chapter 141

-Logan-

Anna checks on our schedule for the day one last time. “Do you want to announce to the board that you’re stepping down today or at a later date?” When I don’t immediately answer, she looks up from her tablet expectantly.

“I think we’ll give them until the next meeting to settle from the upheaval. Wait until our normal meeting- don’t schedule one specifically for that. I’d rather get through an agenda and tell them just before they start leaving.

Anna smirks a bit. “For someone who claims to hate being in the middle of drama, you certainly thrive on it, sir.”

I suck in a gasp, putting my hand to my chest in overdone shock. “I can’t believe you! Where is your manager? I would dock your pay for that.” We both laugh at my theatrics.

It’s good to see a smile on Anna’s face again. She sighs before she says anything else. “It’ll be nice to have the pay increase, but I’ll miss these times, I think.”

I nod, thinking I’ll miss her too. She’s an excellent assistant and we’ve become great friends in the past few years. I take a second to be thankful that she didn’t cause the type of problems Deek has recently been dealing with. “I’m sure I’ll still see you every now and then, especially when I need to interrupt Derek’s day. You’ll be good for each other, I think. He desperately needs you and you both know it. But you need a challenge, too, and he and Ollie keep everyone on their toes.”

Anna pauses a second. “So is he closer to Ollie than… James?” I notice her hesitation over James’ name. Did they have a confrontation at some point?

I pause for a second, wondering how this should be dealt with. “Yes, those two are like brothers. Anna… is everything okay? Will you finally tell me what’s bothering you before I go?”

Her eyes widen, but then she plasters on a big, fake smile. “Nothing is bothering me! I’m doing great!” I narrow my eyes at her, unconvinced by her shitty acting. “Okay, so I will be okay. But it’s my business. Maybe we’ll talk about it after I get everything figured out.” That makes more sense.

“Okay, we’ll talk about it when you’re ready. Just know that I’m here for whatever you need. Even if I have to beat up James for you, whatever he did.” She shoots me a grateful smile and heads out of my office, still without an explanation.

I spend most of the rest of my day on logistics. I want to be discreet about my plans to leave, but I also want the company to be prepared. I’ll of course leave plenty of time to get things settled after I announce the hiring of a new CEO, but I’ve always made a point of being over prepared for everything I do. Everything that doesn’t have to do with Emory, anyway.

It’s strange to think about the fact that we’ve really only been together for a few months. Emory shot through my life like a meteor, and I know I did much the same for her. At least I already knew about the distant possibility of fated mates. I didn’t even have to learn about an entire new race of people. She had to learn a lot more to be with me than vice versa. I’ve been so wrapped up in watching her gain confidence and come into her own that I haven’t given her the proper credit for how smoothly she’s been handling everything. As if my thoughts of her summoned news of her, my phone lights up with a text from Hammer.

Hammer:

Your girl wants to tell you about it later so I won’t go into detail

But she had a confrontation. Chick seemed pretty possessive.

Surprised she wasn’t a wolf. Catty bullshit.

Me:

And why the fuck didn’t you do anything about it?

Although I look forward to hearing about it from Emory

Hammer:

Got waved down. Decided to take the entertainment.

Me:

That doesn’t sound like your job.

Hammer:

She was safe, which is my job. She was confident enough to deal with it herself.

Sounds like I did my job to me.

Me:

I guess. No panicking then?

Hammer:

Nah, she brought the smack down. Let her tell you about it.

Was fun to watch.

I am so ridiculously proud of my little rose. It sounds like she finally found her thorns, after all. The contrast between whatever happened today and her run in with the guy a week ago is so stark. I don’t know if the difference is Hammer, her wolf, or just seeing that nothing bad actually happened last time, but I’m grateful to all three for taking another worry off my plate. Soon, I’ll have time to go out with Emory wherever she wants to shop and we won’t have to worry about paying Hammer anymore. I almost can’t believe that our lives are finally starting to get a little simpler instead of more complicated. We’re finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and not a moment too soon.
