Logan Chapter 64

-Logan-

I should find a way to get Emory more comfortable with her sexuality. Obviously, in a society where everyone can smell what you were doing previously, there isn’t as much taboo about sex. Add to that the mandatory nudity shifting in and out of human form, and we’re all pretty comfortable with each others’ bodies. Mates are still very possessive of each other, but talking about previous activities clearly doesn’t count as straying. Humans, at least where Emory grew up, seem to operate in exactly the opposite way.

This might be another reason we have to bring her family in on the shifter secret- no way will they be okay with her living in the pack house if they think we’re some sex cult. I can just imagine the voices I heard over the phone yesterday- was it only yesterday?- screeching with indignation and alarm. Are they religious? I didn’t even think to ask. I haven’t noticed Emory practicing anything, but that could have been the effects of the mate bond messing with her. I have so much still to learn about my little rose, no matter that I already feel like I’ve known her forever.

I take Emory’s hand and lead her out of the conference room. She takes a couple of deep breaths to collect herself, and I leave her to it while I navigate us back to my office. Anna is all smiles now that I’m in the room, but I know she had nothing nice to say when I was busy. Emory tends to make friends everywhere she goes if others allow it, but it might just take time for these two.

“Anna, if anything urgent comes in, forward it to my cell. Feel free to email me anything you need done before tomorrow morning, but for this afternoon Emory and I have logistics to handle back home. Is there anything urgent to take care of before we leave?” Anna gives a cursory glance to the pile of paperwork in her out box that’s supposed to end up on my desk and shakes her head.

“There’s nothing that can’t wait until tomorrow, sir. Everything else has been delegated or taken care of. Have a nice night.” She smiles vaguely in our direction before going back to staring at her screen. Something has her distracted.

“If everything’s okay, we’ll head on out then. Have a good afternoon, Anna.” She just nods, but whatever it is can probably be dealt with tomorrow. I pull out my phone when I feel it vibrate with a text.

Landon: So when is my vacation?

Me: Dude, Emory’s family will be here in 2 days. That was the deal, remember?

Landon: Oh yeah, cushioning you against the in-laws. Right.

Landon: Would they be my in-laws too? Surely not. Does that mean I can hit on Emory’s sister?

Me: Hell no it doesn’t! I think she’s like seventeen, you creep! I should tell her brothers.

Landon: Oh shit, gross. Don’t think throwing me under the bus will get you off the hook.

Landon: I see through your plots.

Me: You deserve it. Hitting on Emory’s sister. You nasty.

Landon: I didn’t know! I do not deserve it! I am a gift to the world and I deserve a vacation!

Me: Keep your panties on, you’ll get your vacation. Next week, maybe.

Landon: In an eternity, you mean. Whatever. Get home safe, darling!

Me: Yeah, we’re getting in the car now. Stop tracking my phone, weirdo.

Sometimes, Landon and I are so alike that it feels like I can hear his thoughts, and sometimes I wonder if he’s actually a changeling. I suppose his targeted pressing of every single button I have marks him as my brother either way, though. Nobody can be annoying as well as family.

“What’s going on?” Emory must have seen my exasperation at my text messages.

“Just contemplating what age is too late to leave a little sibling at an orphanage.” She bursts out laughing, and I can’t help grinning back at her. She has this full-throated laugh that she only does when I catch her off guard, and I think it’s my favorite sound. Except the one she makes when I hit just the right spot inside her. That’s probably my favorite sound. But the laugh is my second favorite, and it’s a close second, at that.

“I think eighteen is the cutoff. I guess we still have about six months to change our minds about Elliana. I wonder if we can sneak her off without Mom noticing?” We grin at each other as she leans into the joke. I can’t believe I got lucky enough to be fated to someone with a sense of humor and a body like she has. It feels like I won the lottery, but forever.

“Damn. Well, we’ll get a break from him on this vacation he keeps talking about. Hopefully, he comes back easier to deal with. Maybe this is just the Landon version of tense.” Like I don’t know already that it is.

Filling in for me really did a number on Landon, and this mess up with Cora was just the last nail in the coffin of my brother’s terrible mood. He knows that all his mistakes have been traced back to thinking with the wrong head, and he’s finally starting to get frustrated that he can’t seem to learn his lesson on it. Maybe having a new sister-in-law will help him demystify women in general and learn to keep his wits about him. I could help her with some prank ideas… but pranks really aren’t Emory’s style. I’m sure she’ll come up with something diabolical all on her own. I take her hand as we talk for the rest of the ride home, and I can’t even understand how I got so lucky. Hopefully her family will like me and the elders will love her almost as much as I do.
