Fell In Love With My Roomy Chapter 69
"Hi Juls!" She sounds cheerful, and I smile. "What's going on?"
"I-um....I just wanted to.....to tell you that I broke up with Dane this morning," I whisper, fiddling with the hem of my sweater. "You were right, we're too different, and.....I realized it for myself. He's not coming anymore."
"Oh honey, I'm sorry, I know it's been close to a month that you've been seeing him," she whispers. I feel tears threatening to spill from my eyes but my composure for the call.
"But I still want to come," I tell her.
"Honey, of course. You're always welcome, are you sure you're not too upset?" She asks, and I sigh.
"No, I'm not," I say, trying to sound confident. "I actually.....I was wondering if you could set the table for another four people?" I mumble, and she pauses.
"Four boyfriends, huh?" She teases, which makes me laugh, genuinely laugh for the first time all morning. "For who?"
"My friend Abby, and my roommates Kyle, Mark, and Kent-"
"Oh Kent! Good, I'm glad he's coming. He was so kind when I met him a few weeks ago," she gushes, and I roll my eyes. Mom seemed to be convinced Kent was the best thing since sliced bread.
"So is that okay? I know it's a lot to ask," I admit, and she chuckles.
"Honey, my enchiladas fill two deep casserole dishes; I'll make some sides and make lots of food. If they're helping you right now, then they're very welcome here," she insists, and I smile.
"Alright, thanks mom," I whisper.
"Well, I'll get cooking. I'm so excited, I haven't had this many people in ages," she beams, and I chuckle.
"We're looking forward to it; I'll see you at....does five still work?" I ask.
"Yes, bring them at five," she instructs, and I grin. "I love you honey, you're a great catch and an amazing girl. Things will work out."
"I love you too, mom, thank you," I whisper.
"I'll see you tonight, bye," she says, and I end the call, pulling off my purse and kicking off my shoes. I flop into bed on my stomach and draw the blankets up over my body, pulling up my laptop and turning on my favorite comfort show. Law and Order, but SVU, not the normal one. There's way more seasons of SVU.
I pull up some random season and lean my cheek on my mattress, feeling my tears run. I felt tricked, hurt.
I did feel a little responsible for the way I felt; I went back to him after he'd done something mean the first time. I took him back without thinking, all because I just wanted to prove that I wasn't into Kent. I wanted to prove that I could handle a big grown-up relationship with someone who I didn't really have any deep feelings for.
I lay alone for a while, burning through several episodes of Law and Order. The old ones were better, more interesting. I was just enjoying having something mindless to watch, something that felt comforting. Maybe a show about sex crimes didn't sound appealing, but it was my favorite show.
I hear a knock on the door after a while, and I sniffle, pausing my show. "Come in," I call, wiping my tears from under my eyes.
Kent's standing in the doorway, and I sigh. "Hey, how's it going?" He asks, and I shake my head.
"This fucking sucks," I whisper, and he almost chuckles at my blunt remark. "Where's everyone else?"
"Abby went home to run some errands. Mark remembered he had some essays to finish so he ran over to the library, and Kyle's at the gym," he whispers.
"Well, would you come here then?" I ask, feeling totally vulnerable.
"Sure, but I have to give you something first," he says with a smirk, holding up a shopping bag. I blink back, closing my laptop and sitting up. "I was at Target getting groceries, and I saw something, and I.... thought you might like it," he admits, and my heart fuses back together.
"What is it?" I whisper, and he pulls the cutest dino out of the bag. It was round, plush......I've seen those online before.
"It's a squish....animal maybe?"
"A Squishmallow?" I ask, feeling my lips part, and he looks at the tag.
"Yeah," he says, walking into my room, and I feel a mushy grin spread over my face. "I wasn't sure which one you'd want, but I saw them on a display," he mumbles, forking it over, and I feel my heart race. My mind speeds up, and I smile for the first time in hours.
"Oh my god, it's literally adorable," I admit, squeezing the life out of it, and he laughs.
"I picked the dinosaur for you, history geek," he teases, and I shrug.
"I wear that badge with honor. Thank you very much," I tell him, looking at the sweet dino's smile and eyes. "Y-you bought this for me?" I ask, feeling confused, and he clears his throat.
"Yeah," he shrugs, like it wasn't a big deal, and I roll my eyes.
"Why?"
"I thought it might make you feel better," he admits, and I smile. "It's just a stuffed animal-"
"I love it," I whisper, shaking my head and giving him a quick hug. "Thank you so much, it's perfect." He nods, pulling back a bit from the hug to give me a relieved smile.
"I'm glad," he sighs. "What have you been up to?"
"Just watching a lot of Law and Order and crying," I admit, trying to smile. But it wasn't working, I was upset, no question. "C-can you stay? I know you said you won't go any further than this, and I'm okay with that. I just....I could really use someone right now."
"Sweetheart," he whispers, giving me this amused smile. "I'll stay with you, move over," he sighs, tossing the shopping bag on the floor. I move to the right side of my mattress, leaving him room to sit down next to me.
