The Biker's Fate Chapter 497
Marigold arrived with our food, cutting off any further conversation, and I took the distraction to shut down.
I was falling for this man, and it was obvious he didn't feel the same way, so I needed to separate the sex from the emotions. Actually, what I needed to do was shut down the sex altogether. It was fucking with my heart.
Train was right. We had less than three weeks left together, and I couldn't risk fucking up the whole thing by letting emotions muddy the waters.
I needed to protect my heart. No one else would do it for me.
"Baby?"
"Yeah?"
"You gonna eat?" he asked.
"I am eating."
"No you're not," he argued. "You're pushin' your potato salad around with your fork."
I forced a smile. "I was just thinking about the key change in 'Flowers,'" I lied. "I was thinking maybe we take it up another step."
He wiped his mouth with a napkin, then settled his elbows on the table and studied me. "You run the risk of blowing out your voice if you do that."
"You don't think I can do it?"
"Not what I said." He frowned. "Why are you pickin' a fight with me?"
"I'm not."
"Bullshit."
I dropped my eyes to my food.
"Melody, what just happened?" Train asked.
"Can we just eat?" I huffed out.
"Baby, look at me."
"No."
He sighed, sliding out of his side of the booth.
"What are you doing?" I squeaked as he shoved his giant body onto the bench beside me.
"You're shutting down on me."
"I'm eating," I argued.
"We've already established you're not eating, Wart, so how about you tell me what's going on in that head of yours?"
"You don't want to know," I grumbled.
"Okay, well, let me try to speak Melody Morgan and clarify my point."
I rolled my eyes. "Good luck."
"I would love nothing more than to go with you to your sister's place. I would love nothing more than to fuck you six hundred ways 'til Sunday for as long as you want me to, but we live in different worlds, not just different places in the country. I have obligations with my club I can't blow off, which doesn't mean I can't make arrangements, but it also means we'll need to renegotiate our agreement."
I met his eyes. "Renegotiate?"
"Yeah." He cupped my face.
"How?"
"Make this a thing."
"You want to make this a thing?"
"Yeah. But I totally understand if you don't," he said. "I mean, the sex is phenomenal, and singing with you is like connecting on some other psychic level, but it's all the worrying and general anxiety you bring to the table that really turns me on, and quite honestly, I don't think I could live without that in my life."
I bit my cheek to keep from laughing because he was kind of being rude. "Shut up."
"I like you a fuck of a lot, Melody. You're kind of amazing and I like us together. I'd like to see where it goes. Build something maybe a little more long term."
"You would?"
"Yeah. What about you?" He stroked my cheek. "Wanna go steady?"
I let out a quiet snort as I pitched forward, burying my face in his neck. "Yes. I absolutely wanna go steady." I sat up. "Do I get your class ring?"
He grinned, holding his hands out in front of me. "Which one ya want, baby?"
My eye went immediately to the one I'd been fixated on the day he'd played for me in Jaxon's office, and I bit my lip and pointed to it. "This one."
"Oh, yeah?" he asked, twisting it off his finger. "How come?"
"I'll tell you later," I said, sliding the ring onto my middle finger. It was way too loose, and I wrinkled my nose, trying my thumb.
"Here," Train said, pulling a chain out from under his shirt. He slid the ring onto it and secured the chain around my neck.
"I'll never take it off," I said, sliding my hands to his beard and tugging on it. "I like you too, Court. A lot, a lot. Too much, probably. I'm sorry I'm neurotic."
"I'm not," he said, leaning down to kiss me.
I raised an eyebrow. "You're not?"
"It makes you interesting and a fuckin' freak in the sheets."
"No, you make me a freak in the sheets," I countered. "Because you make me feel safe. I've never felt safe before."
He smiled. "That's my job, baby. I take it seriously."
"I know. I appreciate that."
"You done freaking out now? I'm hungry."
I wrinkled my nose. "I am for the moment, I guess."
He laughed, kissing me one more time, then moving back to his seat. "We're gonna chase the sunset, then we'll head back to the hotel so I can show you just how safe you are."
I shivered, biting my lower lip. "Did you happen to buy more lube?"
"Bought stock in the company."
"Fuck," I hissed. "Safe, indeed."
He grinned.
We finished our lunch, left an exorbitant tip for Marigold, along with my 'special' business card that meant they would be let into the private entrance of the venue and given backstage access to the meet and greet area. I promised them a surprise if they came early, so I really hoped they would take me up on my offer. Climbing back on Train's bike, we chased the sunset into the canyon, then Train took me back to the hotel.
As promised, Train took me to bed, and I proved just how freaky I could get.
