Monday morning, I drove with Flash to the airport, doing everything in my power not to completely break down. I had a really, really bad feeling about all of this, but I couldn't keep him from going. It would be unfair.

He was driving my car and he pulled into the drop-off at PDX, sliding my car into park before turning to face me. "You okay?"

"Nope."

"You gonna be okay if I leave you?"

I forced a smile. "Yes. Of course I am," I lied.

"I'll text you every day and call if I can," he promised.

"Okay."

"And if you need anything, my parents are just a phone call away."

"Honey," I said with a sigh. "I'm a grown ass woman. I'm good."

"Two weeks..."

"Tops," I finished.

He grinned, leaning in to kiss me. "Love you."

"Love you, too, honey." I stroked his face. "Now, go. You're gonna miss your flight."

"Right."

He popped my trunk and slid out of my car, while I climbed out and waited for him to grab his stuff.

Dropping his bag on the sidewalk, he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close. "Do not worry about me."

"Okay."

"This'll be a cakewalk."

I rolled my eyes. "Okay, French Fry, I'm good."

He stroked my cheek. "I'm gonna fuckin' miss you."

"I'm gonna fuckin' miss you, too."

Kissing me gently, he nodded. "I'm gonna go."

"Okay, honey."

He reluctantly pulled away from me and picked up his bag. "Be safe driving home."

I gave him a salute and he laughed.

"Go, Flash," I ordered, starting to lose a little resolve.

He nodded, kissing me again, and then made his way through the revolving door. I scurried to my car, pulling away before I could run and pull him back. I drove over the bridge but instead of going to Flash's parents, I drove to mine. I needed some mom time. I called her on my way.

She answered immediately. "Hey, sweetie."

"Hi, Mom, up for a visitor?"

"Of course. Use your key."

I grinned. "Okay, see you in a few."

I pulled up to the house and practically ran inside. "Mama!"

"Kitchen," she called back. "I want to see the ring up close."

I kicked off my shoes and made my way back.

Mom was at the island, chopping veggies, so I stepped over to her and showed her the ring.

"Holy cow, sweetie, that's amazing."

"I know," I breathed out. "I love it so much."

"He did so well," she said, going back to the veggies.

"He is such an incredible guy," I said as I washed my hands, grabbed a knife, and joined her. "What are we making?"

"Crock pot chicken noodle soup," she said.

"My favorite."

"Did Flash get off okay?" she asked.

"I think so. He's going to call me when he boards."

"You sure you don't want to come home while he's gone?"

I smiled. "No. I'm going to use the quiet to study."

"Have you scheduled your exam?"

"Not yet. I have until October to register."

"And the exam's in February, right?" Mom asked.

"Yep," I confirmed.

"Well, it's good you've got a few months."

I sighed. "Yes, yes, it is."

"How are the practice tests going?"

"Okay," I said. "I don't want to register until I ace the practices. I'm still at about eighty percent."

"Eighty's good, honey."

"Eighty's not one-hundred," I argued.

She smiled. "No, it's not, but try not to put too much pressure on yourself, honey. It doesn't have to be perfect."

"I'll try."

"That's all I ask."

My phone buzzed on the island, so I grabbed it, seeing it was Flash. "Hi. Are you on the plane?"

"Yeah, they bumped me to first class."

"Ooh, fancy."

He chuckled. "Yeah. I'm all for free beer."

"What if there's an emergency and they need someone to fly the plane?"

"I think the airlines are covered, baby. I won't need to step in." I heard the smile in his voice when he asked, "Is the sky still falling?"

"A little bit," I admitted. "I'm at my parents' so I think that'll change."

"Good, baby. Are you gonna go home?"

"Yeah, of course."

"Good. I left you something in the freezer."

I grinned. "That'll be the first place I look when I get home."

"Okay, baby," he said. "I have to put my phone away, but I'll call you when I land."

"Okay. Love you."

"Love you too, baby."

He hung up and I let out a deep sigh. "I have a bad feeling."

Mom raised an eyebrow. "Why?"

"I don't know," I said. "I just feel blue."

"Period?"

"Nope."

"Well, don't borrow trouble. It's probably because Flash is heading to a potentially dangerous situation."

"Yeah. That's what I keep telling myself."

"Whatever you need, baby girl. You know that."

"I know. I appreciate that."

"You gonna stick around for dinner?"

"No, I really need to study," I said. "I can hang for a little while, though."

"How about I make you some breakfast?" Mom asked.

"I'd love that," I said. "Thanks, Mama."

"You're welcome."

I stayed for about an hour before heading home feeling ten times lighter than I had earlier. I let myself into our gorgeous home and went straight for the freezer, pulling it open to find it stuffed with everything mint chocolate chip. In fact, three-quarters of the freezer was filled with ice cream, while the rest had a few actual food items.

I couldn't stop a laugh as I closed the door and settled myself on the sofa, pulling my laptop onto my lap.

Time to study.
