Damien's pov

Browsing through the records of past coronation ceremonies in the throne room with Uncle Keiran, I looked through every scroll trying to understand the rites that came with the ceremony.

"This one says that sweet blood be offered to the Uncle of the king," Uncle Keiran said and I chuckled, that was a lie.

"That is not true Keiran," I said and he shrugged his shoulders.

"How would you know, you are not the one reading from the scroll are you?" He said and I smiled. It was exhausting trying to make everything perfect. I rubbed my temple and looked straight ahead through the opened doors. It was as if I had conjured her up by staring too hard.

Agatha, the head maid, in full stride, walked up towards me.

"Your Highness," she said with a bow and I greeted her back. She gave a courtesy bow to my uncle and turned her attention back towards me.

"What brings you here Agatha"

"Your Highness, I would like to report a certain maid to you. I am sure you would have also noticed it but Christie is becoming way too comfortable with the Queen. Christie is a stubborn child and often disobedient. I feel she is nothing but bad company for Her Highness. I ask that you cut off Christie from Her Highness before it's too late"

Christie was a bad influence? I couldn't say I hadn't noticed their closeness. I just thought it was nothing much since Freda was happy with her. I didn't realize they were that close for even Agatha to come complaining about it.

"Hmm, has she done anything that should raise my concern?" I asked. Surely not even the maid would want to try anything stupid to hurt Freda.

"No, Your Highness, but who is to tell what evil thought she is putting in her head?"

"Do you mean, my mate?" I frowned.

"I meant Christie, Your Majesty. What if she tries to hurt the Queen."

"She wouldn't dare." I snapped. "How does this bother you, Agatha?"

"The welfare of the royals is my priority, My king. Christie should be nowhere her Highness, as she is beginning to see herself above us that she rarely joins us for duties in the kitchen and only sees herself in the position to serve the queen."

"How can such a little girl see herself higher than you?" Kieran added.

"I am worried because the Queen consents to Christie's attitude. And this has given Christie some weird confidence. There is a high possibility Christie is filling the other maid's heads with nonsense. She should never be trusted," Agatha said and I frowned. I did not like the information I was getting. I thought she was a better choice when I picked her but I am guessing I was wrong.

"I also have come to notice this, it is not fitting for a queen to bring herself low as to make friends with a mere maid. What happens when the news gets out, people are skeptical of her from the beginning and some haven't seen or deemed her worthy enough to serve beside you, what happens when they learn she is being influenced, and not even by a Noble but by a servant girl who isn't even full vampire"

This angered me more. The thought of my people not accepting Freda bothered me, and if these sorts of rumors spread out. It will raise some questions about her authority.

"I'll see to this. Thank you." I said.

"Your Highness" Agatha coughed. "If you need replacement, I can find another competent maid for you."

"Never mind. If Christie were to be replaced, you would do the job"

"That would be an honor, Your Majesty" She smiled widely and with a bow, left.

"You've been attending to pressing matters since your mate arrived. You have not rested? Is she good or bad luck?" Kieran taunted.

"She is new to all this, Uncle Kieran. Moreover, I take pleasure in seeing my mate every time, if there's something to scold her about, I'll be glad to see her face again."

Kieran laughed, holding his chest tightly like I had just given him a heart attack. "You're such a lover boy. Who would have thought? I thought Steve would be the only dumb one"

I frowned at the mention of my twin brother. Sometimes, I felt awful for killing him, most times I was glad he and his father didn't kill me first, and vet few times, I felt pity for him. Maybe if he wasn't so dumb and hungry for power, he would have seen right into my father's devious plans to make him king.

And not just him, all the elders and nobles too. If they knew the plans my father had for them to make Steve king, they wouldn't be on his side.

"You haven't told me why you're on my side, Kieran. You used to like Steve also, even if you said I was your favorite. But you do not seem remorseful about what's happening."

Kieran's countenance changed immediately. "I see myself in you, Damien. And that's why I'm on your side. Your father, who happens to be my brother did the same thing." He walked toward me and patted my shoulders. "Shall we say this is a generational curse? Draken supported my father in his dubious deeds to crown him as King. They won and look where I am. The drunk pervert who comes into the castle and makes himself a nuisance"

He heaved heavily. "Damien, I'm just happy you won the fight against your father. You took the throne. Having this throne is what any vampire would get to make a name and history for himself. Your father was the most powerful king. And I know you'll be another great king"

I studied him for a moment.  He seemed broken, always as. "Before you bore me with your sad stories. I need to be with my mate" I walked out of the throne room.
