While others seek survival, I engage in flirtation Chapter 47: Matt!
I had already agreed to let him crash at the camp; what more did he want? If we weren't so short on people right now, I wouldn't have let him stay at all.
"Matt, I need to ask you something." I hopped down from the cave and walked over to the corner of the camp.
Matt followed right behind me.
"How did those two people die?" I cut straight to the chase.
I just wanted to know how the two people near my camp had died and if our camp was in any danger.
"I really don't know! I just went to find some food, and when I came back, the supplies were gone, and two people were dead at the cave entrance." He frowned, looking disgusted. "I guess they probably tried to split the stuff and run, but ended up fighting over it and got killed."
Matt's reply left me speechless. What a jerk! He didn't care at all about the lives of his campmates.
"The other two are dead, right there." I pointed to where Landon's body used to hang. "Didn't you look for them?"
Matt looked stunned and completely dejected.
"I searched the woods for a long time but couldn't find any trace of them, so I thought they ran off with the supplies." He couldn't even look me in the eye as he spoke.
I guessed even someone like Matt would feel guilty.
He roughly told me what happened before he found me. After seeing someone dead, he left the camp and ran into Moon on the beach.
He said, "Listen to me, there's definitely something wrong with that girl. When I met her, she seemed totally out of it! And when we ran into wolves, she just vanished! If I weren't smart, I'd be wolf food!"
I didn't know why Matt held such a deep grudge against Moon, but I thought he might have had a point.
He had no companions or place to stay then, and he had no reason to lie to me. If I found out he was lying, I would definitely have kicked him out of the camp.
"By the way, how did you know where our camp is?" I stared at him and suddenly asked.
From the moment I saw Landon's body, I suspected that Matt and his group knew the location of our camp.
"Did you follow me?"
He immediately waved his hands, afraid I would kick him out. "We didn't follow you! Actually... we already knew the general location of your camp, but not the exact spot, so I found it by exploring."
I didn't believe Matt's words, but for the sake of the camp, I still allowed him to stay.
Besides me, there were no other men in this camp.
When there was a lot of work, I really couldn't handle it all.
"You can sleep outside, and notify us if anything happens!" I pointed outside, "If you want to sleep in the goat pen, that's fine too."
After saying that, I jumped back onto the stone platform and returned to the cave.
The warm firelight still burned in the cave, giving the whole camp a cozy feel.
In the past few days, Margaret had sewn some large blankets in the camp and spread them near the campfire. Half of the cave was cleaned and smoothed, with blankets laid out.
Even if we walked barefoot on it, it wouldn't feel hard at all.
Since Moon showed up at the camp, she's been scribbling away in her notebook, sometimes tilting her head like she's deep in thought.
The other girls and I were totally baffled by her actions. Probably because we didn't get the whole writer thing. We had no clue what she was up to.
I waited until she put down her pen to cautiously ask.
"Which ship were you on?" I probed carefully, but she looked completely lost.
"What ship?" She looked even more puzzled. "I didn't come by ship!"
"Then how did you get to this island?" I couldn't help but be curious.
Since I washed up on this island, everyone I met was a shipwreck survivor. Who in their right mind would come to such a desolate place on purpose?
"Of course, I came by jet ski... but I'm not very good at it." She smiled awkwardly. "The jet ski broke down and sank into the sea."
I didn't know how to react. Was she really that calm?
Her jet ski had already sunk!
How was she planning to get back? How were we going to get back?
"So you came here on your own?" I still couldn't believe it.
A young girl coming to such a deserted island, now with a high chance of not being able to return.
And she could still smile!
"So that means... you know where this place is?" I wasn't giving up. Any useful info was gold for us now.
I stayed close to Moon, always keeping an eye on her.
She didn't seem to be lying, but she was too unpredictable.
"This is an unnamed island, very remote, and hardly anyone comes here." She said, jotting down a few more lines in her notebook.
I wanted to peek at what she was writing, but she always managed to block my view.
"So what are you doing on this island?" I pressed. She didn't look like she was here for camping!
Her eyes suddenly lit up, and she grabbed my arms with both hands.
"I'm here for inspiration! I'm working on a novel, and I think the environment of this island is perfect!" She looked at the scenery outside the cave and couldn't help but laugh. "Every time I write a book, I have to experience it firsthand."
After saying that, Moon ran to the cave entrance to watch the sunset.
Experience? If she had to experience everything she wrote, did that mean she had to personally experience the romantic scenes as well?
Seeing Moon at the cave entrance, I called the other girls in the camp over.
"Let me be clear, I don't like Matt either," I explained to them. "But Matt is alone now, and leaving him outside might get him killed."
"We need more hands right now, and his presence will lighten our load."
The other girls in the camp agreed with me. I thought everyone understood that to survive, relying on just me and them would be very difficult.
This camp desperately needed more men.
"Also, we don't know much about Moon's situation yet." I glanced at Moon, who was still writing something. "But she and Matt knew each other before."
I added, "So, what I'm saying is... even though I let them come to the camp, it doesn't mean I accept them."
"Tomorrow, I'll take Charlie to look for those freaks again and try to figure out a way to deal with this problem as soon as possible."
