While others seek survival, I engage in flirtation Chapter 58: The Storm

But now, things were getting complicated.

Moon managed to use hypnosis to wake Mary up for a bit, but we still couldn't get any useful info out of her. I was worried the other weirdo was in the same boat as Mary.

It felt like we had hit a dead end. If we wanted to learn more about the canyon and that research institute, we'd have to head back into the depths of the canyon.

Plus, for some reason, I had this nagging feeling that we hadn't uncovered the real secret hidden in that canyon.

We tied up the two weirdos near the camp and then went back to have dinner.

It was just me, Matt, and the girls at the camp now. We whipped up some instant food and roasted some mushrooms and hares. With a sprinkle of salt and spices, they turned out pretty tasty.

After eating, we cleaned up. I made some bowls and plates out of wood and dry grass. They were a bit wonky, but they did the job.

Looking at those makeshift dishes, I got a bit sentimental. When we first got to this island, even getting the basics was a struggle.

But now, we had a decent camp, plenty of supplies, and we could even enjoy a balanced meal on this desolate island.

The camp was super quiet, except for the sound of Ivy washing dishes at the camp entrance and the whimpering of the two weirdos.

Watching their animal-like behavior, I felt a bit sorry for them. I gave them some food and then headed back to the cave.

From the cave, I could see the two weirdos scarfing down their food. Their eating habits made me even more sure there was some dark secret behind their madness.

It was really late, and the girls and I were getting ready to crash. Just as we lit the campfire and were about to sleep, a sudden cold wind blew in from outside.

On this island with a usually mild climate, the cold wind was a shock. Normally, the air here wasn't this chilly.

But soon, we found out where the cold air was coming from.

It started pouring rain outside the cave. If it weren't for the cave's higher ground, we'd be soaked by now.

"Oh my God! Such heavy rain!" Aimee exclaimed, wanting to rush out of the cave, "Our fence will be ruined! The sheep will run away!"

She tried to jump down from the cave's edge, but the drop was pretty high. If she jumped, she'd definitely break a leg.

I couldn't just let her get hurt, so I pulled her back.

"I'll handle it!" I said, jumping down from the cave.

Our camp was surrounded by a wooden fence, but the drainage was terrible. We didn't think about that when we built the fence.

Honestly, the camp was so small, I didn't think it needed a fancy drainage system.

I moved everything that could get damaged by the rain into the cave and then sat at the entrance, waiting for the rain to stop. But things didn't go as planned; the rain was relentless and showed no signs of letting up.

The water in the camp kept rising, and things were looking pretty grim.

The haystacks left outside were completely soaked, and there was water everywhere. Our sheep pen was half-flooded, and several goats were frantically running around, standing in the water and bleating non-stop.

We never expected such a heavy downpour. At this point, it was definitely too late to dig a drainage system.

Our only option was to remove a post to let the water out of the camp.

Dennis had given us a camp blueprint with a drainage system, but I always thought our camp was too small to need one. Honestly, I regretted that decision now.

After Matt and I drained the water from the camp and fixed the fence, things finally started to look better.

Just as I was about to head back to the cave, I heard a shout in the distance.

"Help!" The voice was getting closer. Whoever it was sounded really panicked, running quickly towards our camp.

Following the sound, I saw a familiar figure. It was Dennis! What was he doing here?

"Dennis?" I watched him run all the way to our camp, gasping for breath as he leaned on the fence, looking puzzled.

Wasn't their camp already abandoned? Where did Dennis come from?

And judging by his panicked look, he must have encountered something serious.

"Carl! Something big has happened!" He hadn't even caught his breath yet, urgently shouting my name and shaking the fence.

I immediately jumped down from the cave and walked up to Dennis.

His face was still filled with fear, but seeing me seemed to calm him down a bit.

"Carl, those weirdos." He looked at me and then around, "Those weirdos will be here soon!"

His shout alarmed everyone in the camp, and the air was filled with a sense of panic.

"So what exactly happened?" I was also anxious, grabbing his shoulders and asking him, "Did you see something?"

Dennis nodded and was about to speak when he was suddenly interrupted by a strange cry.

Mary, who was nearby, suddenly screamed for some reason. She looked very pained and kept muttering something.

"Red Nightingale Research Institute, experiment, don't go back..." She mumbled a few words and then clutched her head and screamed.

Seeing this, we were all startled. Dennis even fell to the ground in fright.

"Why do you have weirdos in your camp?" He pointed at Mary and kept retreating, looking very scared of these weirdos. If I hadn't been holding him, he would have run away.

I quickly explained to him what had happened in the past few days and the origins of these two weirdos.

After hearing my explanation, Dennis finally relaxed a bit.

"So, these weirdos are probably being controlled." He didn't fully trust my explanation and still looked skeptical.

But given the current situation, even if he didn't believe it, he couldn't find any other reason to refute me.

He walked over to Mary, carefully observing her, and then turned to me.

"Alright, you make some sense." He let out a long breath and stood up, "Since you can subdue these weirdos, I'll tell you what's going on."

Dennis lifted his shirt, revealing a scabbed wound. The wound seemed very fresh, looking like it was only a few days old.
