While others seek survival, I engage in flirtation Chapter 54: The Cave
Matt was a guy, and if he tried to mess with the girls, I wouldn't be able to stop him right away. So, I had him take the lead while I brought up the rear. This way, I could keep an eye on the two girls and make sure Matt didn't try anything funny.
The four of us entered the cave like this. It was super damp and cold, way chillier than outside.
We trudged through the cave for what felt like forever before we finally saw a faint light at the end of the tunnel.
The passage opened up into a clearing with a stone platform in the middle, used for burning stuff. There were a bunch of animal corpses on the platform, their bones mostly shattered, and the flesh all jumbled together, making it hard to tell what was what.
This burning platform looked a lot like the one we saw in the woods, where Assad had grabbed some animal bones. But in that place, the bones were more broken, and the fur was still on the corpses.
There were some sparks on the corpses, but they hadn't fully caught fire yet. It seemed like whoever set the fire had just left.
I scanned the area and spotted two figures darting away behind a tree not too far off.
They looked a lot like the weird person we captured and took to the camp that day, but they didn't seem as crazy.
Seeing them sneaking around, I took off after them. Honestly, I had never seen anyone run so fast; I could barely keep up.
The strange person in front of me, draped in wolf fur, got all alert when he saw me, waving his arms and shouting. He could only make these dull sounds, flailing his arms like he was trying to shoo me away.
The other strange person was even weirder. He was a bit farther away but still in my sight. He seemed really scared of me, just standing there facing me. I couldn't even see their faces.
At that moment, the guy in front of me crouched on the ground like a wild animal.
I wanted to ask him something, but given his state, he probably couldn't answer me.
"Stop!" I heard Lilian shout. Just as I was focused on the strange person in front of me, the other one started to sneak away. Lilian noticed first and immediately ran up.
"Watch him, I'll be back soon," I told Moon. Realizing the strange person was about to escape, I took off after him, running for quite a while before catching up.
Before leaving, I handed Moon a rope, asking her to keep an eye on the strange person in front of us.
"Got it," she nodded, putting away the notebook she was writing in and walked over to the strange person.
There was another reason I asked Moon to watch this guy. I had already seen her strength, which was almost the same as mine. She could not only watch this strange person but also keep an eye on Matt.
Lilian and I finally caught up with the other strange person, struggling to subdue him. He was super strong and looked terrified when he saw us.
I grabbed the fur on the strange person and yanked hard, revealing his entire body.
At that moment, both Lilian and I froze.
The person standing in front of us was none other than the strange woman we had captured last time.
Seeing her face, I immediately remembered what I had seen in the cave with the hidden door.
I had come across this woman's file there. Her name was Mary, and she was one of the researchers of the "Red Nightingale."
She looked beautiful in the photo on the file, but now she was a mess and reeked. If she was indeed part of some mysterious organization on this island, as the file suggested, then why was she here like this?
As I looked at the somewhat deranged woman in front of me, my questions multiplied. She and the other strange person both seemed a bit mad, their hollow eyes filled with fear.
She looked at me, her expression twisting as she recognized the knife in my hand from Abbott's camp. Though her mind was foggy, she remembered it.
This scene suddenly made me think that the reason for this woman's madness might not be simple.
I tried waving my hand in front of her, and she immediately lunged at it. Luckily, my reflexes were quick enough; otherwise, my hand would have her bite marks.
Seeing her mental state, I immediately took a rope from my bag and tied her up. I couldn't let her harm Lilian, even if she might not be able to.
After restraining Mary, Lilian and I prepared to head back to where Moon was.
Along the way, Mary kept struggling. We had a tough time bringing her back to the clearing where we came from.
By the time we returned, it was completely dark, and the clearing was pitch black. The moonlight was almost entirely obscured by clouds, barely allowing us to see the outlines of the people in front of us.
When we got back to the clearing, I found that not only was the strange person tied up, but Matt was also bound.
"What happened to him?" I frowned, looking at the tightly bound Matt.
"He tried to attack me." Moon was still sitting on the ground, holding her notebook.
That thin notebook seemed never-ending. I had rarely seen her turn its pages.
The surroundings were unusually dark, yet she was still writing something on the paper. I now had reason to suspect that Moon might have night vision.
"Can you see what you're writing?" I asked, watching Moon's hand occasionally move on the paper, feeling a bit skeptical.
She suddenly looked up, a familiar blue light flashing from the corner of her eye.
"I see just fine," she said, pointing to her notebook. "Perfectly clear."
After saying that, she slowly walked to my side, a faint fragrance reaching my nose. Those glowing blue eyes appeared in front of me again.
Her gaze seemed to scrutinize me, leaving me momentarily speechless. I had to turn my face away, avoiding her eyes.
"How does it work?" I asked, looking at the increasingly dark sky around us, unable to resist looking at her eyes. Her eyes were like a cat's, with long pupils and deep, distant gazes.
"I can't explain, but I just do." She tilted her head, seemingly genuinely thinking. Then she pointed to her chest and then to behind me.
