While others seek survival, I engage in flirtation Chapter 64: Finding a Way Out
No joke, this was the biggest, roundest moon I'd ever laid eyes on. I was at a loss for words just staring at it.
If I hadn't seen it myself, I'd never believe something like this could exist in the real world.
For some reason, the whole scene felt like a dream, but there was no other way to go.
I took a deep breath and stepped outside. It wasn't what I expected at all. The house wasn't that big; if Dennis and Moon were still fighting those things, we should've heard something. But it was dead silent, like we were in another world.
"Lilian?" I called out but got nothing back.
I shouted for the others too, but still, no response.
Under that full moon, my heart was racing. This was the first time I felt real fear on this island.
I only stayed outside for a few minutes before heading back to the basement.
"What's up with you?" Lilian rushed over as soon as I got back, looking worried. "Why were you just standing out there in a daze?"
I was confused. I had called her name, so how could I have been just standing there?
"In a daze? Was I?" I asked, pointing at myself, desperate for an answer from Lilian.
This didn't match up with what I remembered. Something was definitely off.
But Lilian just shook her head, unable to explain. I realized pushing her wouldn't help, so I let it go.
Suddenly, I heard shouting from outside. More like the anguished cries of those creatures.
Then Dennis's voice cut through. "We need to get out of here! There are too many of these monkeys!" Even in the basement, I could hear him loud and clear.
Monkeys? I couldn't believe those sharp sounds were coming from monkeys.
And Lilian and I were still in the house! If they left, what would we do? Moon had taken my knife, and I was unarmed. How could I handle all those monkeys?
"Dennis, that jerk, is he planning to ditch us?" Lilian had heard him too.
Given the current situation, it seemed pointless to hope for someone to save us.
I had to trust my gut and find another way out. The basement door always felt off to me.
I didn't explain much to Lilian, just said if we left through the back door now, we might run into those crazy monkeys.
Lilian didn't say much either, just nodded and followed me deeper into the basement.
There had to be a staircase leading up somewhere, we just hadn't found it yet.
The torch barely lit up the place, and after a long search, I finally spotted a passage blocked by a bunch of junk.
The passage was super narrow, with cage-like structures on both sides.
"Must've been some scary stuff locked up here," Lilian said, tapping the bars with her knife, and making a sharp metallic sound.
In the dim light, I could see a thick layer of dried blood covering the bars.
"This place must've been used to lock up those experimental subjects," I said, moving closer and spotting even more bloodstains inside.
Anyone would be freaked out by this scene, but I had to keep my cool if we were gonna get out of here.
We walked a bit further and hit a massive iron gate. I tried yanking it open with all my might, but no matter how hard I tried, it wouldn't budge, so I had to give up.
Honestly, I was stumped. The gate wasn't that big, and the bars were thin. With my strength, it should've at least moved a little.
Feeling a bit down, I leaned against the wall and sat down. Suddenly, I heard a switch click, and the whole basement lit up!
I couldn't believe it and quickly turned to Lilian. She looked just as confused as I was.
We both stared up at the light bulbs above us, which occasionally buzzed, and we fell silent.
I felt a bit dazed. Electric lights? Here? I never expected there to be electricity on this island!
"There must be a power generator nearby, and it should be a big one," Lilian said, glancing around the now brightly lit basement, rubbing her eyes in disbelief.
Who would've thought this deserted island had such a large power reserve?
What made me even happier was that under the light, Lilian and I easily found our way back to the first floor.
The stairs to the first floor were right near the front door. As soon as I got back up, I saw what was happening outside.
I thought Dennis would've already bailed. But as I walked up the stairs, I met his complex gaze.
I was puzzled by his expression until I saw what was happening behind him.
Moon was holding my short knife, slashing through the monkeys.
To be precise, she looked more like she was dancing in the moonlight.
Her movements were graceful, her actions elegant. The heavy knife in her hand seemed to move effortlessly.
This was too surprising! Not only did Moon have night vision, but she was also a beast in combat. More importantly, even when facing the bloody scene of monkeys being cut in half, she remained unfazed.
Her gaze was gentle, her eyes not even focusing on the monkeys. She just casually swung the short knife, taking them down.
Finally, the monkeys were either dead or had fled, leaving Moon standing in a pool of blood, her expression calm as ever.
"Clear," she said, shaking the blood off the short knife before tossing it to me.
Even though I was strong, it was tough to throw the short knife that far, but she just flicked her wrist, and the knife flew towards me.
I even heard the sound of the blade slicing through the air.
I caught the knife and walked to the door, with Dennis and Lilian following. Under the moonlight, we could see the almost mountain-like pile of corpses outside.
Dennis had some scratches and bloodstains on him, probably from fighting the monkeys.
But Moon, who had just killed so many monkeys, didn't have a drop of blood on her. At that moment, she was even calmly writing something down.
