Chapter 19 - Element

Lukas POV

"Mom! Dad! What are you doing here?" I asked.

"What do you mean, what are we doing here? It's been two damn months Lukas. I know when something is wrong. Are you hiding here sulking over her death?" She said.

"Son, we heard about Donnatella. Now, we're sorry to hear about your loss, but she wasn't your destined mate." My father said.

"Who is that?" My mother asked pointing to Syble.

"Uhh ohhh!" Angelo said.

"Keep your voices down, I'll explain everything in a moment." I told them. I had hoped to take Syble back to my room and lay down with her, but now I didn't want to leave her upstairs while I was down here. I laid her on the sofa with a pillow and Angelo quickly brought me a blanket to drape on her. She looked a little pale and it worried me. I'd feel better if she woke up and ate something to help get her strength back up, but she also needed to rest.

"Angelo, order some lunch from downstairs and also some chicken noodle soup." I instructed him.

"OH GODDESS! SHE'S YOUR MATE!" My mother gawked at me.

"What? Son, did you find your mate?" My father asked.

"Uhh ohhh!" Angelo uttered again as he busied himself with the hotel restaurant menu.

"You'd have to be blind not to see it. He can't even stand to be away from her and take her to the bedroom to rest." My mother was very intuitive.

"What's wrong with her?" My father asked.

"You didn't blind her with dirt in the eye the moment you met her did you?" My mother let out a low laugh because my father had done that to her when they first met.

I sat down at the table and started telling them exactly what had transpired. How I came across her at Sapphire Moon, and never really made eye contact with her. How Luke picked up her faint scent and thought she was our mate before I actually knew. I told them that she was a prisoner and had caused the death of the pack Luna or that her parents had, I was still unclear because no one has really talked about it. I told them she had been living in the barn caring for the horses since she was a pup."

"How despicable!" My father snarled.

"You should have called us." My mother was furious.

"I didn't want you guys getting all crazy about that ridiculous prophecy. Getting grandma and grandpa all worked up over it too. It's like some silly family obsession or something." I told her.

"It's not ridiculous Lukas, it's your destiny, we cannot change what the Moon Goddess has fated for us no matter how hard anyone tries." My father said.

"I'm thirty-one. She's eighteen. Thirteen long years of suffering without her, thinking the Moon Goddess forgot about me. Watching everyone else mate and have pups. Feeling myself grow colder and lonelier, that heavy absence in my heart."

"You have your mate now. Let her fill the emptiness in your heart." My mother wrapped her arms around her mate.

"No one seems to have a problem with a thirteen year age gap?" I snapped back.

"Oooh Daddy!" Angelo interjected and my father laughed as I scowled at them both.

"Age doesn't matter son, there's eight years between your mother and me. I also had to wait longer than most wolves for her."

"Sometimes you find your destined mate and only get a short while to love them. The Moon Goddess can't promise when, where or how long you have with your mate. She still gives you the choice to reject of accept your mate. Not everyone is lucky to get a second chance mate." My mother told us and I knew she was thinking about uncle Kosta and Angelo who had lost their mates. My Great Uncle Ranger who never got a second chance.

"Tell us more about her." My father said.

I went on to tell them about the attack on Sapphire Moon from Blue Mountain pack. I told them that I had met Alpha Trevor and was shocked when his pack attacked during the mating ceremony. I filled them in on Donnatella's death, the chase, the poachers and the underground auction. I told them about my hunt for Syble in the city and that she was practically mute.

"And you said you were going to mate with Donnatella. How could you!" My mother smacked me on the back of the head.

"He sure did!" Angelo laughed. I'm glad he was amused.

"What do you mean she's practically mute?" My father asked.

"She doesn't really talk." I said.

"But she did say your name today and that you were a handsome wolf." Angelo chimed in with a grin on his face.

"Thank you Angelo." I said and gave him the stink eye. I walked over to the front door and opened it. The lunch carts were coming out of the elevator and the hotel staff wheeled them in.

"Lukas, you said she's an Omega, are you sure she actually killed Donnatella, who was an Alpha born wolf?" My father asked.

"She wanted to kill me. I tried to defend myself." Syble's little voice said and we all turned to look at her on the couch.

"Syble, you're talking!" I said.

"Storm is helping." She gave me a little smile and shifted her eyes nervously at my parents.

"Syble, these are my parents. Alpha Dimitri Theodorus and Luna Raven LaRue Theodorus of Olympus Blood Moon in Greece." I introduced my parents and she nodded her head. Her voice was like music to my ears and I couldn't believe the effect she had on me.

"I'm sorry, I didn't catch your last name." My father said and I realized I didn't know it either.

"M-Martin." She managed to say.

"Come let's eat, I'm hungry." My mother said to her and took her hand leading her to the table.

Syble sat down and I took the seat next to her. "How are you feeling?" I asked her as we started eating.

"Better." She nodded her head and took a drink of water.

"Is everything okay?" My mother asked Syble.

"Syble hasn't had her first shift yet. Angelo and I took her out to see if Luke could help draw her wolf out to shift but it didn't work." I told them.

"A mate should always be able to draw out the others wolf." My father looked a little concerned.

"Well, some of the bones started shifting and then reverted back."

"Maybe it's because they haven't actually mated yet?" Leave it to my mother to embarrass someone. She was probably right. Since we had not mated and marked each other, our bond was not as strong as it should be. Syble gave me a sideways glance and I could see the blush creeping up her face. It's a good thing Angelo had a mouth full of food so he couldn't share his commentary.

I thought about what she had said about Donnatella trying to kill her. A wave of guilt flooded me. At first I thought the guilt was because I had moved past Donnatella with the wolf who killed her, but then I realized it was because Syble was left to defend herself alone with an Alpha wolf who tried to kill her. All these feelings just flooding through me and I could feel myself tense as I suppressed a growl. The Moon Goddess sure was having the last laugh with me.

"Syble, can you tell us about your parents?" My mother asked her. Luke was getting anxious with all the attention Syble was getting and wanted to take her upstairs and let her rest. I was torn between taking her upstairs and wanting to hear about her family.

"My mother was from Blue Mountain and my father from Sapphire Moon." She paused a moment and we waited patiently. "My father was a warrior, he died trying to protect Luna Tara who was also killed. A-Alpha James killed my mother when my father died and took me as a slave when I was ten." She told us and we could all easily connect the dots and figure out what happened next.

"It was Blue Mountain that came during the mating ceremony, a female wolf came into the barn who knew my name." Then she looked up at me. "The gray wolf who helped me run also knew my name, he said he knew my mother. I'm not sure if they came for me or why." She spoke really low, but we could all hear her.

"Something was off in the attack at Sapphire Moon. The attacking pack was not fighting to the death, it was more of a distraction." I told my parents as I recalled that day.

"We know Alpha Trevor from Blue Mountain Pack, his son has the pack now. He's on the shifter's council." My mother said.

"That's not all." I said.

"There's more?" My father raised an eyebrow.

"Syble is also elemental."

"WHAT?" My mother jumped up.

"Which element do you have?" My father asked her.

Syble looked to me nervously and I nodded my head to reassure her. She looked at my mother and then to my father. "Air."

"Sweet Moon Goddess! It's happening." My mother clapped her hand over her mouth and stood with her eyes wide open.

"Do you have the same crescent moon on your neck?"

She nodded her head and lifted her hair up to show him.

"Have you been able to control your element?" He asked. She shook her head no.

"How could you keep this from us Lukas!" My mother rebuked me.

"I just found out last night." I said as I ducked another swipe to the back of my head.

"What is your element?" Syble asked me.

"I have three of the four; water, fire and earth." I told her.

"All three?" She looked at me with shock and awe.

"A wolf typically only has one." My mother explained to her. "My mother has fire and my father has water. I was the only child out of six to get both elements." My mother pointed to the little gas burning fireplace and made the little fire roar to life. Then she pointed to Syble's water cup and made the water swirl around. Syble stared wide eyed taking it all in.

My mother continued, "when I met my mate in Greece, I found out he had earth. Lukas' brothers have earth and his sisters have water, but Lukas is the only one with all three. You're the first wolf we've ever encountered with air."

"My father is an excellent coach. He's trained all of us, including my cousins how to control and develop their gifts. He can help you." I offered.

"The greatest of our kind just seem to flourish in his hands." My mother smiled and gave me a knowing look as she pointed to the prophecy.

"Of course, I'd be happy to. You're family now." My father smiled. Syble's eyes seemed to glisten as she smiled at my father's words.

"Since air and air pressure is connected to weather, I wonder if she can impact weather?" My mother asked my father.

"Only one way to find out." He replied.

It was late afternoon and we took the helicopter from LaRue Enterprises out to Montauk which is at the east end of Long Island. It's the day before the human's Thanksgiving holiday so we didn't except anyone to be out on New York's most eastern point beaches. We wanted a safe place to test out Syble's element away from the city. Syble was tense and I realized this was probably her first time flying, I scooted right next to her to help calm her.

The helicopter landed near the lighthouse and we walked a short distance down to the beach. My father used his element to shift some rocks around and we stood on the sand waiting for my father to instruct Syble. He moved closer to the water's edge and the wind was blowing pretty strongly.

"Feeling the base of your element, like a strong wind, should energize your strength. The fuel to manipulate your element comes from your thoughts and emotions, you must focus on that first before you can will your element to do what you want. Do you understand?" He asked her and she nodded her head.

"Come, stand in front of me." He instructed and she moved in front of him.

"Close your eyes. We're going to stand here for a few moments and just feel the strong wind. Feel it on your face, in your hair and pulsing through your body." My father told her.

"Imagine something you want to do, like holding the wind back from hitting us. Make it go around us. Picture it in your mind. You control when it starts and when it stops."

The wind on the beach completely stopped. It was as if someone had placed a protective dome around us. There was an eerie stillness as we exchanged glances.

"Release the wind." I heard my father whisper in her ear and the wind raged back at us. My father leaned into her ear and gave her further instruction, but we couldn't hear because of the shrilling wind.

A moment later a small spinning wind formed in a twisting motion. It grew larger and larger as it picked up driftwood, sand and water. I watched as my father spoke into her ear again and the twister changed direction and moved away from us. He placed his hand on her shoulder and it completely stopped. He whispered something else in her ear and she nodded her head.

Her arms stretched out towards the sky and she stood quietly for a moment concentrating. She lowered her arms and cold gusts of air came blowing down from the sky as warm air rose quickly. I realized she was trying to cause electrostatic in the air and clouds, which could manipulate weather.

A flash of lightning struck the big log near us and was followed by a loud "CRACK" of thunder from above. Syble fell to her knees and before my father could even kneel next to her, my arms wrapped around her.
