#####Chapter 5 - Forked

I opened my eyes and realized it was well after sunrise. I tried to move but my body was screaming in protest from the beating I received last night. My head was throbbing as I pulled myself up to the sitting position. My left eye felt swollen and slightly shut. I lifted my hand to my face and felt crusted over dried blood as it flaked off. Werewolves typically heal fast, but since I was so weak and possibly human, my healing is slow.

Today is the mating ceremony so I wasn't really allowed anywhere except the barn. I stood up and felt my hip nearly buckle under me as I remembered the blow Alpha Jaxon gave me to the hip. I hobbled myself over to the toilet closet and sink to rinse my face off and drink water. I still had to tend to the horses and then I could bathe. With everything going on today, I expect to have an uneventful day at the barn.

I moved to the supply closet and retrieved my muck rake and bucket to clean out the stalls. I moved each horse to an empty stall while I cleaned out their stalls. When I returned them to their clean stall, I gave them their hay.

I sat back down in my own stall on my pile of straw when I was done. I was easily exhausted and wanted to rest up a bit before I gave myself a bath. In fact, I'll probably just rest until later this afternoon when everyone is getting ready for the ceremony, then I'll bathe and wash my dress.

I wondered if things would get better for me with our new Luna. Or maybe I'd have double the trouble since she was mated to the Alpha who despised me. I don't even know her name yet, she's from a different pack. I thought about last night and how cruel Alpha Jaxon is. If he had just ignored the bread rolls, then he wouldn't have felt embarrassed in front of the other Alpha.

Lukas, Alpha Lukas is what he called him. I felt my body quiver at the thought of his name. I don't think I've ever heard that name before and he's not from around here. When he spoke, I could hear an accent in his voice. He was unlike anyone I had ever met. I'm assuming that Donnatella met him while traveling overseas. He was obviously important if Alpha Jaxon was so concerned with what he thought and felt I had embarrassed the pack.

I closed my eyes, allowing my body to relax and recover, I drifted to sleep. A few hours later, I was awakened by dreams of Alpha Jaxon taunting me. I sat up in the pile of straw and could hear the sound of music in the distance. My heart was racing, even in my sleep I had no peace.

I stood up and made my way to the grain barrels. I scooped some feed grain in my bucket and gave it to the horses. Now seemed to be a good time for a bath and the cold water from the hose might actually help my aching body. I dragged out the old water trough and filled it up with water.

Just as I was getting ready to take off my clothes and get in the bath, Domino started pawing the ground again and backing up in the stall nervously. I wondered if he could sense someone coming to the barn and stood frozen in fear. A loud howl ripped through the air and it sounded like all hell broke loose.

Snarls, growls, whimpers and howls filled the air and all of the horses seemed restless. I could hear hundreds of racing paws and even felt the earth shake. Was that an earthquake? I looked out the barn door and saw wolves fighting. We were under attack.

Our pack was a relatively average sized pack of about seven hundred, with more than half of the pack being trained fighters. Smaller packs were more prone to being attacked and taken over by some of the larger packs, but we weren't really that small. Though I certainly wouldn't mind if someone did beat Alpha Jaxon and take the pack. Maybe then I'd have a chance to actually thrive in a pack.

I could see some of the wolves fighting getting closer and closer to the barn. My legs seemed paralyzed and I couldn't move. I didn't think anyone would harm a human slave, but I wasn't sure if they came to conquer or kill. Our pack owned about two thousand private acres in the Adirondack region which would make it a desirable pack to try and take over.

I stumbled back and grabbed the metal hay fork that was nearby. I looked around and wondered if I should hide in the stall with Domino. If there was any manure in the stall, it would help mask my scent. I also considered climbing up on the roof to hide. The last time we had a rogue attack two years ago, I climbed up on the roof. A creature on four legs couldn't climb a ladder.

Before I could even decide, the door was nudged open and I could see an injured brown wolf limp in. Fear pumped through my veins and I lifted the hay fork up. The brown wolf let out a whimper and shifted back to human form. A female with short brown hair and brown eyes was bleeding from the neck.

"Please, I'm not here to hurt you." She panted and tried to lift herself up.

I stepped back and kept a hold of my hay fork.

"Are you Syble?" Her voice was breathless.

My eyes widened in shock and a chill ran up my spine. How did she know my name? Who was she? Was she from our pack?

I heard an angry growl and a skinny black wolf with two white spots over its shoulders appeared in the doorway baring its teeth. In one swift jump, the black wolf jumped on the injured female, who seemed to know my name, and finished ripping out her windpipe to kill her. I gasped as my trembling hands held on tighter to the hay fork.

The black wolf eyed me and shifted into human form. It was Donnatella. Seeing her black wolf with white spots reminded me of Domino, he too was black with white spots. This explains why he was her favorite. She stood with her hands on her hips and I diverted my eyes to the ground in submission.

"Now you're conspiring with the enemy I see." She sneered at me.

I shook my head no.

How could she possibly think that, I've never left this pack, I don't have any friends, and I haven't uttered a word in over eight years.

"Your pathetic father is the reason my mother is not here today for my brothers mating ceremony. She won't be at my mating ceremony with Lukas either." She said.

Trembling, I stepped back, but for some reason I didn't drop the hay fork. It was still in my hands.

"I think it's time I disburse some justice of my own. Every time I see you, I'm reminded of something very painful. Now I can finally put it to rest and blame this bitch from Blue Mountain pack!" She growled at me and shifted back into her black Alpha wolf.

She was ready to pounce at me. I could see the anger and determination in her eyes. I stood ready to accept my fate with my head hanging down. I was ready to leave this sad little life behind and see my parents in the gardens of the Moon Goddess.

Donnatella's wolf let out a growl and stalked towards me. I exposed my neck in submission, waiting to feel her teeth sink in. Any moment now, and it would all be over. I welcomed it. She would finally have her revenge and peace so she could move on with Alpha Lukas. Wait, did she say she was going to have a mating ceremony with him?

The thought of her living happily ever after with Alpha Lukas bothered me, actually it enraged me. Something inside of me screamed, FUCK THIS BITCH!

I'd had enough of her and all of their punishments for something I didn't do. For something I couldn't control as a pup. I felt the barn doors fly open and a gust of wind blow in. I felt energized as the fresh breeze hit my face. I looked up and saw her lunge at me, her wolf mouth open, aiming for my neck. In a speed that surprised and shocked the hell out of me, I lifted the hay fork up and drove it right through her throat.

Blood splattered on me and her wolf dropped whimpering. I stood frozen, breathing hard, unable to grasp what had just happened. She shifted back into human form, clutching her neck as she choked on her own blood. My mouth hung open, my hands trembling, I dropped the hay fork. I watched as she struggled, and the light left her eyes. I'd like to say I felt sorry for her, but I didn't.

I heard loud painful howls ringing from a distance. I knew that Alpha Jaxon and his father, our former Alpha who enslaved me, must have felt the family bond break when Donnatella died. I was going to be blamed for this. This was a guaranteed death sentence for me. Or with my luck, extreme torture for the rest of my sorry little life.

If I stayed, I was going to die. Or worse, be tortured. If I run, I would likely die out there, but I'd rather die trying to escape then stay in this hell hole anymore.

I looked at Domino and walked to his stall. I considered trying to ride away on him, but his scent was strong, and a horse would be easily tracked. I didn't want to see him hunted and possibly killed by wolves because I was trying to escape. My heart couldn't bear the thought of that. I looked into Domino's soulful eyes, he had been my only friend all these years, and I gave him a grateful kiss goodbye.

Since my scent was faint, I might stand a better chance at hiding and running. It might take them some time to find Donnatella with all the commotion, so I needed to get moving. They would soon realize I had forked her to death. I slipped out the barn and closed the doors behind me.

My legs seemed to know where I was going. They quickly carried me behind the barn and to the forest tree line. This is it. I was going to escape this pack or die trying. If they catch me, I will do everything in my power to ensure they do not bring me back alive. I was going to have Donnatella's father, Alpha James, her brother, Alpha Jaxon, and her mate, Alpha Lukas, hunting me.

Moon Goddess guide my way. I silently prayed in my head as I entered the forest.
