#####Chapter 8 - Knife

I woke up to the smell of food. I was in the back of a big van inside of a cage with two others. My eyes shot open with fear and I sat up. There was another young female with short blonde hair about my age and a boy with brown curly hair who was about seven years old.

"She's finally awake! Eat up kid, you look like you need a few meals." Said the man named Saul I met in the woods earlier. Or was it last night? It appeared to be daylight outside and we were traveling somewhere.

"Here, it's a breakfast sandwich." The young girl said to me and handed me a sandwich with bacon, egg and cheese wrapped in paper with golden arches on it. It was still warm! I took a few bites and nearly let out a moan it was do delicious. The wolf from the woods was not in the van, I could only see the human.

"What's your name?" She asked me and the boy with brown eyes looked up at me. He was tucked into her side and it appeared they knew each other.

I wanted to answer her, but I wasn't sure if I could. I grabbed her hand and drew the letter S on her hand.

"It starts with an S." She said and I nodded my head. I continued to spell my name out, letter by letter, in her hand.

S-Y-B-L-E, I wondered if she would be able to pronounce it correctly, like Sib-uhl.

"Syble! Your name is Syble. What a beautiful name." She whispered to me and even pronounced it just right.

"I'm Selene, named after the Moon Goddess and this is Michael." She said.

Moon Goddess? Did she just say Moon Goddess? I sniffed the air and she seemed to understand that I was checking for a scent.

"Are you a wolf?" She asked.

I put my hands up and shrugged my shoulders. Then I nodded my head.

"I can't scent you." She said.

I pointed back to her, asking the same question. She seemed to understand.

"I'm only seventeen, I haven't shifted yet." She whispered. "This is Michael, the rogue Alpha's pup. We're rogues, but we have the largest rogue pack in the country. I'm not even sure why they call us rogues anymore since we have our own pack." She nervously said.

"Do you talk?" The little boy named Michael asked me.

I shook my head no.

"It's okay, you still communicate very good." He smiled.

I pointed to Saul and gave Selene and Michael a questioning look. I was wondering why they had taken us and where we were going.

"They're poachers. They steal young females or males, both humans and wolfs to sell in the underground slave market. They snatched us up while we were playing in the woods. My Alpha will kill me if something happens to Michael. We need to get out of here!" She whispered to me with tears in her eyes.

Michael looked like he was trying to be brave but clung to her side. He reached into his pocket and took out a small pocketknife. I reached my hand out and he handed me the beautifully crafted pocketknife. I looked at it and rubbed my thumb over the initials M.A.C. that were engraved in the handle.

"Those are my initials. For Michael Anthony Crow." His little voice said as he smiled at me.

A cell phone rang in the front cab and we all sat quiet listening. "Yeah." Saul's voice said as he answered.

"No man. I'm about an hour away depending on traffic, by Yonkers. I need to stop for gas. I'll call you when I get to Harlem... Relax, the auction isn't until tomorrow." He said and disconnected.

"We're going to New York City. Harlem is in the northern part of the city. That must be where they plan to sell us." Selene whispered.

New York City sounded good to me. It's where I wanted to go. It's the largest city in the country and the perfect place for me to hide. To restart my human life. Yet here I was, enslaved again and going to some shifters auction. I looked at Michael and could see the fear in his sweet eyes. I didn't come this far to get enslaved again. I had a knife and when I had the opportunity, I would stab him in the throat if I could. He was human, a wound like that could easily kill him.

I tapped my fingers to my temple to let them know I was thinking of something. I opened the knife and hid it in my hand next to my dress. I laid down on the floor and started acting like I was convulsing and struggling for air. Selene and Michael started reacting and playing along.

"Oh, Sweet Goddess! Are you okay?" She screamed. "Help, there's something wrong with her!"

"Oh fuck! I already promised to deliver three, she better not die on me." Saul said from the front of the van. "Is she choking on food?" He asked.

"I, I think so." Selene said frantically.

"Can you do the Heimlich maneuver on her?" He asked.

"I'm a wolf, not a human. I don't know what a Heimlich is."

The van came to an abrupt stop. His door opened and closed. Then the lock tumbled on the back of the van. He opened the back door and pulled me by my feet towards him. He lifted me up and out of the van. When my feet touched the ground, he wrapped his hand around my waist and tried to squeeze. I started coughing and leaned forward as if to throw up.

He leaned down and asked, "you alive kid?"

I quickly lifted my hand and jabbed the knife into his left eye, and he screamed. Selene and Michael jumped out of the van as Saul screamed profanities and thrashed around. I reached up and pulled the knife out of his eye in case we needed it again. Selene shoved him into the back of the van and Michael pulled his wallet out of his back pocket.

"I'm going to fucking kill you!" He screamed.

We locked Saul in the back of the van, and it appeared we were on the side of the highway. I could see tall buildings in the distance. I wasn't sure what to do next. The van was rocking as Saul kicked and screamed. Selene walked over to the driver's seat of the van and opened the door. She came back with a cell phone and some paper napkins.

"Here, you can wipe the blood off your hand with this." She handed me the napkins.

I quickly wiped my hands and the knife clean. I held on to it, prepared to use it again if I needed to. Michael wrapped his little arms around me, and the tears swelled in my eyes. It was the first time in eight years someone hugged me. It felt so good, so warm. I leaned down and kissed the top of his head.

We listened as Selene called her pack house and spoke to the Alpha. She gave him our location and he told her to drive to the police station in Yonkers and ask for Officer Archie who was a personal friend of his. He told her to wait there until he arrives to pick them up. I wondered if Officer Archie was a human who knew about wolves or a lone wolf living a human life.

"Please come with us Syble." Michael said.

"Our Alpha will take you in. You just saved our life. You can come live with us." Selene said.

I shook my head no. As much as I wanted to go with them, they were wolves and I'm pretty sure I'm human. Their pack was somewhere in upstate New York and that was too close to Sapphire Moon for comfort.

"But where will you go? What will you do? Are you going to get a job and live as a human?" Selene asked me.

That actually sounded very good. I could work in a kitchen or clean hotel rooms or something. I nodded my head, that was exactly what I was going to do.

"Our Alpha will be here in about three hours and we have a wallet full of cash. We should buy you some clothes and shoes, let's see if we can find a store before we go to the police station." She smiled.

We climbed up into the front of the van and Saul was unconscious. Selene drove by the Police department and continued to drive about fifteen blocks to a parking lot of a Walmart.

We selected a pair of comfortable new shoes, a six pack of socks, underwear and sports bras. Then we selected three pairs of jeans and a few shirts along with a jacket.

"You'll want a big backpack to carry your stuff in." She said.

She also grabbed a hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, and granola bars. We paid with money from Saul's wallet and walked back over to the van. Selene started folding and loading everything into the backpack for me. I put on new clothes and shoes. It felt great.

"There's eight hundred dollars left. You'll want to buy a metro card when you get there if you plan to use the subway trains to get around. The hotels in the city are more expensive than the ones in the surrounding areas or boroughs. You'll want to find a job as soon as possible." She said. This was all good information to have, she knew so much about humans.

"Please just come with us. I'll feel better knowing that you'll be okay." She begged.

I smiled. Feeling wanted or cared for was nice. I considered going with her for a moment, but I really wanted to try and make it on my own. Especially if I was human.

"Take our pack house number. If you need anything or change your mind, please call. We can come get you. If you need to find us, most werewolves in the country know who Alpha Crow is." She said.

I nodded my head.

"You probably need a crash course on driving so you can take the van into the city. Dump it when you get there, it could have tracking on it. Someone will eventually find him." She said.

We got in the van again and I sat behind the driver's seat. After ten minutes of lessons, I drove down the street to the gas station. The red gas light was flashing. Selene used Saul's credit card to buy gas at the gas pump. Then I drove them to the police station.

I got out and hugged Selene to thank her for everything. My eyes teared up when I saw the sad look on Michael's face. I took his knife out of my pocket and handed it to him.

"You're the bravest person I know. You keep my knife so you will always remember me. I know I won't ever forget you." He said and threw his arms around me. If he had held on any longer, I may have changed my mind and gone with them. He was the sweetest pup I've ever met.

I watched them walk into the police station and stood waving at them. I opened the door to the van and sat for a moment trying to find my courage. I looked behind me in the cage to make sure Saul was still unconscious and he wasn't even moving. I thanked the Moon Goddess that he was human, if he had been a wolf he would have probably been able to break out and overpower me. I turned the key, put the van in drive and followed the signs to Manhattan.
