Healing His Broken Luna.... Chapter 121
Chapter 34 - Time
Lukas POV
"Please Moon Goddess, take me instead. I know I don't deserve her, but if you ever hear my prayers, hear them now. Please let her be okay... please." I prayed. I've been praying for three days now.
Doctor Edwards had come with us to Sapphire Moon to help tend to any wounded wolves. Unfortunately, Syble was the only one really injured. That bastard had cracked her head open and I almost lost her. Syble was so weak and she had lost a lot of blood. Her healing was slow because she's never shifted. Doctor Edwards had to stitch her up and stabilize her before we could transport her back in an SUV my father took from Sapphire Moon.
Luke has been inconsolable and I'm no better. She looked so weak and pale, I couldn't even tell if she was getting better or worse. We brought her back to the infirmary at Blue Mountain and she's been connected to all types of wires and tubes. Doctor Edwards kept her under sedation to help her rest and recover but stopped sedating her yesterday. I've been waiting for her to wake up.
"Camille made you flank steak and dirty rice for dinner. Try and eat something, she's going to need to see a strong Alpha when she wakes up." Angelo told me as he delivered food again. I haven't been able to eat anything in three days and yet he keeps bringing me food. All I want is to see her sweet hazel eyes flutter open, to hold her in my arms, to tell her how much I love her.
"Lukas, honey, you really need to go lay down and get some rest. I'll sit with her." My mother said as she entered Syble's room.
"I'm not leaving her or my pup." I said and continued to hold onto Syble's little hand.
"Doctor Edwards said the pup is fine and Syble should wake up when she's ready. She's going to be okay." My mother tried to comfort me.
"It's all my fault, I should have just killed him right away instead of inflicting pain first. It was my fault he was able to get close enough to her. She almost died. Our pup almost died." I closed my eyes and took a deep breath just thinking about that bastard. If only I could bring him back to life and kill him again. "He's caused her so much pain and even in his death he's still hurting her. Some mate I turned out to be."
"Lukas, stop blaming yourself. She's going to get better and you've got a beautiful new pup to look forward to."
"What if we don't break the curse. We're running out of time. You heard what Doctor Edwards said, she's never shifted, she needs her wolf to birth a healthy pup. What if she dies? I won't be able to live with myself." I told my mother and tried to hold back my own agony, but my mother was always intuitive and could see right through to me.
"You're not taking the curse, we'll find some other way." She said.
"I've got three elements, I'm strong enough without even shifting. I don't need to take or lead a pack. I just want my mate and my pup. Luke is willing to be bound to let Storm free."
"Please Lukas, don't do anything yet. We still have time to figure this out. She has almost three months before the pup is born."
"Who's having a pup?" I heard Syble's little voice whisper.
"Syble!" I said in disbelief and kissed her.
"Oh, thank the Moon Goddess. I'll go get Doctor Edwards." My mother quickly left the room.
"I love you, I love you so much." I said and kissed her all over her face.
"My head is throbbing." She groaned.
"I'll kiss it for you." I said and gently placed kisses on her head.
"Mmm, that feels so good." She moaned. "So, who's having a pup?" She asked again.
I lowered my face to her level and looked into her beautiful eyes. "We are," I told her. I tried to listen to her thoughts but all I could hear was Storm yipping with joy. Syble let out a soft giggle and I couldn't help but kiss her again.
"Well she's certainly awake now." Doctor Edwards said as he entered the room with my mother fast on his heels.
"Where are we?" Syble asked.
"Syble, do you remember what happened?" Doctor Edwards asked.
"We went to Sapphire Moon, Jaxon ran off into the woods, I followed, and he hit me with a big rock before Lukas ripped his head off."
"Do you remember your birthday?"
"Yes, the eleventh of May." She said.
"Do you remember your parent's names?"
"Marissa and Clay Martin."
"Nothing wrong with her memory. I suspect the other memories lost or blocked are trauma related and will come back with time or a trigger. Syble, you've suffered a major head injury and I expect a full recovery, but the concussion will take some time. Because you've never shifted your healing rate is much slower than other wolves but still quicker than humans."
"How's the pup?" She asked.
"Oh good, you know." He smiled. "Well, I'd like to examine you again to make sure everything is okay, keep you overnight for observation and possibly send you home in the morning so that your mate can rest with you. You may experience, headaches, dizziness, fatigue and vomiting due to the concussion."
"It also sounds like the symptoms of morning sickness." My mother laughed.
Doctor Edwards continued with examining her eye's, ears, neck and head. He looked at her stitching and seemed pleased with the progress. He ordered more blood work and reviewed her recent head scan. After he was done with the exam, he wheeled out an ultrasound machine. He placed some gel on Syble's stomach and I anxiously held her hand waiting for the first view of my pup to come up on the screen. Luke was howling and my mother was sniffling with happiness.
"BaBum, BaBum, BaBum, BaBum, BaBum.." We heard the sound of a strong heartbeat and saw the silhouette of the baby on the monitor.
"It's a little too soon to know the gender, maybe by next week, but everything looks great." Doctor Edwards said as we watched for a moment longer.
It was love at first sight and my heart felt so full. My mother hugged and kissed both of us before my father arrived to take her away and give us some time. I sat on the bed next to her and fed her some vegetable beef stew. Then I laid next to her and held her most of the night as she slept.
Doctor Edwards returned to check on Syble in the morning and was pleased with the progress she had made. Storm was able to speed up the healing when she felt connected to her mate.
"Take her home and keep her in bed for the first three days, I'll come to check her. Alpha pups take a lot out of the mother, so I've got some vitamins in the bag for her. I really can't give her any strong pain medication, because of the pup. The mate bond is good pain relief so stay close, she needs time to heal." He instructed.
I took Syble back to the cottage and carried her inside. She really wanted a bath, so I set her down on the sofa to run a bath. I quickly brought the fire in the fireplace to full blaze so the cottage would be warm and carried Syble to the bathtub. I knelt down next to the tub and gently tied her hair back so that it wouldn't get wet. She needed to wait three more days before she could get her head wet.
Syble was so relaxed, she fell asleep in the bathtub. This wasn't the first time, nor the last time my little mouse will fall asleep while soaking in the tub.
We spent the next three days laying around, holding and loving each other. My mother brought food over and Camille came to cook for us, my father found a cello and brought it to the cottage for me to entertain Syble with. Meanwhile, Angelo and my father spent a great deal of time researching and trying to find a way to break the curse.
I had carried Syble to the sofa and wrapped her in a blanket while we waited for Doctor Edwards to come check on her. She still had headaches but was able to hold food down. My cell phone rang, and I stepped outside to take the call. It was my Great Uncle Ranger.
"How's my favorite Nephew?" He greeted me like always. We spent the next twenty minutes catching up. My grandfather had filled him in on the current situation with my mate and the pup. He nearly brought me to tears when he offered to take the curse for her to ensure she survives the birth. I thanked him from the bottom of my heart and explained that the drinker of the potion needed to be someone who loved her and willingly took it under a full moon.
"Thank you Uncle Ranger, you've always been my favorite Great Uncle you know." I told him.
"That's because I'm your only Great Uncle." He laughed. "If something else changes, or there's anything else I can do, please call me." He said before we hung up.
"We need to protect mate and our pup. I can handle being trapped inside." Luke told me. He had been very anxious and wanted to help in any way possible.
The next full moon was three days away and I was hoping to have a lead by now. Alpha Trevor was working on tracing any contacts that Syble's parents had at Sapphire Moon pack and any connections Alpha James or Alpha Jaxon had to any witches or warlocks. My Grandfather was using his connections at the shifter's council to find another grand warlock or witch that might have another idea. My Grandmother Lucy was reviewing old records to track down witches living in the north east area of the U.S. in the last eighteen years.
The next morning, Syble woke up with morning sickness and it continued all day. She couldn't keep anything down. Doctor Edwards came out to the cottage to check on her and reminded me that an Alpha pup growing in a near human body is very risky. He even said that Syble might continue to get worse. I felt so helpless watching her. No one had told her yet about the possible dangers.
"Syble, I've decided that I'm going to take the potion in two days, on the next full moon." I told her and her eyes widened.
"No. I won't let you. I can live without shifting. You're an Alpha, I can't let you do that to Luke. We will find a way to break the curse." She told me.
"Baby, we don't have time. You've never shifted and you're carrying an Alpha pup. The Alpha of Alpha's. You're going to need Storm to safely deliver our pup."
"What do you mean?"
"An Alpha pup grows faster and takes more from the mother. You could die, or our pup could die, or I could lose both of you. I can't take that risk. I can't live without either of you."
"But, there has to be another way?"
"There isn't. I love you and will willingly take the curse."
"What about Luke? I can't let you do that."
"Luke wants to. Understand, he won't survive if something happens to you or our pup." I told her and she started crying.
"No, No. Please. There has to be another way."
"Nothing is more important to me than you and our pup."
I took the small purple vial out of my pocket and pulled the cork out, I quickly lifted the edge of the vial to her face and captured a fallen tear before she realized what I had done. I moved the bottle back down and replaced the little cork.
"Did you take a tear? NO! NO! Don't do this. NO, PLEASE ..." She continued sobbing and I hugged her tight. She cried until she cried herself to sleep with exhaustion.
My parents came over to the cottage later at night with Camille and Angelo to visit. Syble was still sleeping in the bedroom and I sat in the living room with them. I explained to them what I had done and what I was planning to do. It was a race against time and the clock was running out on us. I didn't want to risk waiting for the next full moon in case things got worse for Syble. She needed Storm for the sake of our baby.
"If you take the curse, couldn't someone else take the curse from you after, with another transfer potion?" Angelo asked.
We all stared at each other in disbelief. Maybe it was possible? Magnus didn't say that it couldn't be transferred more than once.
"Uncle Ranger offered to take the curse for Syble." I said.
"He did?" My father asked.
"Yes. I told him he couldn't because someone who loved her had to willingly take the potion under a full moon. But, if he was willing to take it for her ... Maybe he will take it for me."
"Rex has such a big heart, he would do it for any of us. He loves us like his own." My mother said about my Uncle Ranger's wolf.
"It might just work. I take the potion in two nights. Ask Magnus for another potion. Then Uncle Ranger takes it the next month under a full moon."
"Oh no. Don't tell me we have to hunt him down again?" Angelo asked.
"Yes, we need to return to the haunted cemetery." I joked.
"You better be messing with me!"
"Relax, I have his number." I told him.
