His Belated Love for the Abandoned Ex-Wife Chapter 134: Heartbreaking News
Beatrice frowned. "You're such a kid. So immature."
Luke smiled softly, doting on her. "It's fine. I'll braid it for you."
Jenny smiled shyly, looping her arm through Luke's. "You're the best ever."
Beatrice shook her head with a helpless smile, pulling Iris aside to sit. She taught her to braid the bracelet slowly and carefully.
Iris picked it up right away, and her bracelet came out neat and beautiful.
Beatrice sighed, impressed. "You're so handy. I only showed you once, and you got it this good."
Jenny stared at Iris, her eyes full of jealousy.
Beatrice handed Iris a new string. "I'll teach you to braid a peace knot. It's for peace and good luck."
"Okay." Iris focused hard and started learning again.
After a bit, Lily and Julian walked over together.
Lily threw the bracelet she never gave away on the table, sat next to Jenny, and picked up the one in front of Iris. "This is really pretty. Did Mrs. Everhart make it?"
Jenny let out a scoff.
Beatrice smiled proudly. "Iris made it. I only showed her once, and she learned fast and did great."
Lily's smile got a little stiff. She put the bracelet back and switched topics to chat with Jenny.
Luke joined in too, and the three talked and laughed the whole time.
Iris stayed focused on the peace knot in her hands, calm and gentle.
Julian sat next to Iris, watching her long fingers braid the string in a steady rhythm. His eyes were full of soft affection, warm and tender.
Beatrice glanced at the three laughing people across from her, then turned her gaze to the quiet Julian and Iris beside her. The two contrasting scenes felt worlds apart.
When she thought about Iris wanting to divorce Julian, sadness washed over her. Her eyes were full of reluctance and helplessness.
She'd been worried this day would come for a long time.
She saw the truth clearly. Iris was extraordinary. Her lifelong dream had never been family, and certainly not a man.
Love was just something nice to have for her, not something she needed to live.
If Iris's parents hadn't forced her to marry back then, she probably would have never gotten married. She would have put all her energy into her medical research career.
Beatrice forced a smile and gently nudged Julian's arm. She raised her eyebrows at the bracelet in front of Iris and whispered, "Iris made it."
Julian reached over and picked it up to look at it closely.
His eyes lit up. He really liked it.
Lily's face turned dark. She glared at Julian angrily. Jenny and Luke noticed Lily was upset, followed her gaze, and all looked at Julian.
It was obvious. Lily's bracelet had been turned down, and it was still lying on the table.
But Julian had picked up Iris's bracelet, and his eyes were full of want.
Julian looked at Iris softly. "Can you give this to me?"
Iris looked up, took the bracelet from his palm, and set it back on the table. She picked up the almost finished peace knot bracelet and held it around his wrist to check the size. "I'll give you this one instead. It's almost done. Let me finish it."
Julian smiled softly, and a little disappointment showed in his eyes.
Iris focused on braiding for a few minutes, tied an adjustable knot, and handed it to him. "Here. I hope you have peace and good luck for the rest of your life."
Julian went quiet. His smile was forced. He wanted the infinity knot bracelet she made even more, but he held out his clenched fist in front of her, helpless.
Iris planned to set it in his palm, but Julian wanted her to put it on his wrist herself.
Lily clenched her fists so tight she ground her teeth.
Seeing how firm Iris was, Beatrice felt sad too.
Iris hesitated for a few seconds and then gently put the bracelet she made on Julian's wrist.
The delicate knot looked perfect on Julian's thin wrist. It suited him well.
Beatrice pointed at Iris's infinity knot bracelet. "Give that one to Julian too."
Iris picked up the string slowly. "This one isn't very good. It's too short, and it won't fit him."
Beatrice didn't know what to say. She just sighed softly.
Julian said nothing, staring quietly at the peace knot bracelet on his wrist. His eyes got a little red, and a bitter smile pulled at his lips.
That bracelet stayed on Julian's wrist every day for the rest of his life. He never took it off.
Two weeks after this big ceremony, Jenny and Luke held a huge wedding.
Jenny married her childhood sweetheart Luke right after college.
On the wedding day, Julian stuck with his groomsmen, hanging around the groom.
Everyone was caught up in the joy. Iris got a phone call and then left the wedding in a hurry. No one noticed she was gone.
At the hospital...
Iris saw her father lying in the hospital bed. His face was yellow, his stomach a little swollen, and he held his chest, crying in pain. Her legs went weak.
Iris and Ethan were called to the doctor's office together.
When the doctor laid all the reports out in front of them and said, "Liver cancer, stage three," it hit them hard. Both siblings' eyes turned red, and their bodies shook nonstop.
Outside the hallway, Ethan was so sad he couldn't stand. He covered his face and cried.
Iris cried quietly, hugging Ethan's shaking shoulders tight, comforting him as best she could.
Faced with her father's illness, even though she was an expert in medical research, she couldn't do anything. In that moment, she felt so small.
