A dark look flashed in Arthur's eyes. "I was just playing hard to get back then. I never thought you'd go on a blind date with Julian so soon. I really like you—that's why I did this."

Iris couldn't tell if he was being honest or lying.

But she knew a woman would definitely feel something if it was her first time.

"You took those bed photos of us and sent them to Julian, didn't you?"

Arthur didn't say a word. He just nodded.

Iris held back her tears and asked calmly, "You went to all this trouble to drop a time bomb in my marriage to Julian. You're so low and dirty."

Arthur reached out, like he wanted to touch Iris.

Iris stepped back in disgust, glaring at him. "Don't touch me."

"I love you, Iris." Arthur's confession was deep, his eyes calm with no emotion at all. But his tone was faked to sound heavy and sad. "I only did this to ruin your marriage. I never thought Julian would still marry you after finding out you cheated."

"Maybe he knew the photos were fake. Maybe he knew we were innocent."

Arthur shook his head. "We weren't innocent. He knew everything because he was there too."

Goosebumps broke out all over Iris's body. She was panicky and shocked, so angry her blood boiled. She couldn't help but snap, "What did you do to Julian?"

Arthur saw he couldn't hide it anymore, so he came clean. "I just didn't want you two to get married. Asking you to revise my paper was real—that's why I asked you to the hotel. When you passed out, I sent Julian the bed photos. I also sent him the hotel's address and room number. He came, but he didn't go in to catch us."

Iris felt weak all over. It was like her heart had been split in two with a big knife, bleeding and broken. She couldn't breathe, shaking all over from the pain. Tears finally spilled over, sliding down her pale cheeks.

Arthur kept talking. "He sat in the hotel lobby the whole time. When you and I left the hotel laughing and talking that morning, I saw him sitting in the corner, watching us."

Iris closed her eyes slowly. Tears soaked her entire face, and her heart shattered into pieces. Just thinking about how sad Julian must have been back then made her heart ache sharply.

How much pain had Julian been in? How much had he hated her?

He'd watched his soon-to-be wife go to a hotel with another man the night before they legally married. He'd even sent him bed photos and told him to come catch them in the act.

It was such a low, dirty thing to do.

Iris covered her face with her hands, took a deep breath, wiped her tears, and glared fiercely at Arthur. "Did you really drug and rape me?"

Arthur nodded again.

"Why aren't you saying anything?"

"Because you're recording this."

Iris smiled bitterly through her tears. "You're pretty clever. You set out to create an unbreakable divide between Julian and me. Even if I'm innocent, the 'fact' that I cheated will never go away. Our marriage could never last."

"Iris, love is selfish. I did this because I love you. I want you two to get divorced."

Iris pulled a recorder out of her pocket and turned it off right in front of him. "You really are careful. But I remember waking up and feeling nothing."

"I gave you a sedative and painkiller."

Iris wiped the tears off her cheeks again, calming down. She spoke every word slowly. "Arthur, do you really think I can't prove my innocence if you just deny it?"

"Iris, I'm sorry. But it's been two years. You're getting divorced from Julian now. Your innocence doesn't matter anymore."

"It does matter." Iris's nails dug into her palms as she clenched her fists. "Julian must hate me so much that he'd marry me even with the shame of being cheated on."

Iris's heart felt like it was being cut with a knife, a dull ache hitting her over and over.

Now she finally understood why Julian had never touched her in two years.

Everything from the past made sense now.

Because he hated her. Because he thought she was dirty.

After she'd asked for a divorce, Julian's attitude had suddenly flipped completely.

She could only think of two reasons. Either he loved her so much he couldn't let go... or he hated her so much he wanted to trap her in marriage, punish her, get revenge on her for the rest of his life, and make her suffer through loneliness and pain in their marriage forever.

The first one didn't make sense. Julian had married her after only three months of knowing her. They barely knew each other, not truly liking one another and only sharing mutual admiration at best.

And then there was her cheating.

No man in the world would love a woman who cheated on him.

The second reason made more sense.

Iris put the recorder back in her pocket, her cold voice serious and filled with hatred. She spoke every word clearly. "I won't let this go. If you really drugged and raped me, I'll send you to jail myself."

Arthur didn't care, looking confident. "It's been two years. How are you going to prove it?"

Iris stared at him, scoffing coldly. "Do you think I slept around when I was in school? Or that I must have slept with Julian during the three months of dating? Or you know most women don't bleed on their first night, and I'd overlook that during all the times I've slept with Julian these past two years?"

When he heard that, Arthur's face changed right away.
