His Belated Love for the Abandoned Ex-Wife Chapter 95: Lily's Condition

5 min 1 views

The hospital room was warm and cozy. Only Iris and Frank were there. The other beds were empty.

Iris spoke in a soft voice, telling stories that little kids love.

The door was open, and somehow it drew a kid from the next room over.

Iris was really patient, telling one story right after another.

Noon rolled around.

Ethan brought food over. He noticed Frank was doing really well. His mood was bright, like he'd forgotten all his worries and fear.

Ethan fed Frank. As he chewed his food, Frank rambled on about the Night Beast and the clever boat-and-arrow trick. He used simple, broken sentences and waved his unhurt hand around to explain.

Tears welled up in Ethan's eyes. He thought if Frank lived with Iris, he'd grow up to be a really good kid.

But he couldn't give his son a good home.

Iris finished the lunch Ethan brought and then went to a repair shop outside the hospital to get her phone fixed.

On her way back, she ran into Lily's mom, Irene, carrying a thermos on the main road to the inpatient department.

What a coincidence. Irene saw her too, and she didn't look happy at all. She walked over with a cold face.

"Mrs. Prescott, hello." Iris greeted her politely.

Irene stopped, stared coldly at something else, and glanced at her out of the corner of her eye. Her tone was icy. "That's nice of you, but Lily will only feel worse if she sees you. Don't go up."

So Lily is in the hospital? She just happens to be at the same one?

Iris didn't explain the misunderstanding about visiting. She asked politely, "Is Lily okay?"

"No." Irene glared at her, her voice getting harsher. "She has had smiling depression for years. She has taken medicine for a long time. She got better little by little and stopped taking it two years ago. She's not like everyone else—she's sensitive, fragile, and overthinks everything.

"It's fine that you and your friend talked trash about her and Julian. She likes Julian too, after all. But you shouldn't have turned Julian against her! She and Julian have been friends for more than 20 years. How could she handle Julian cutting her off out of nowhere?

"He even fired her from being his secretary and blocked her number and WhatsApp. Julian was way too cruel. Her depression came right back. She wouldn't eat or drink, stayed in her room crying all day, and thought life wasn't worth living.

"Last night, she took a whole bottle of sleeping pills. We were lucky—we found her in time and rushed her to the hospital to get her stomach pumped. She barely made it."

As she talked, Irene started wiping her tears. Her voice was full of sadness and anger. "Her depression is physical now. You're the reason for this. If she dies, you won't live either."

Iris clenched her fists. Her heart felt really heavy.

Smiling depression, years of medicine, physical symptoms now, and she took a whole bottle of sleeping pills.

This didn't look fake.

Maybe she really loved Julian that much. She couldn't stand even a little distance or coldness from him, let alone him cutting her off completely.

Iris always respected life. She nodded, feeling guilty. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Prescott. I hope Lily gets better soon. I won't disturb her."

After she said that, she kept walking toward the pediatric inpatient department.

Iris got on the elevator, and her phone started ringing.

It was Zoe calling.

She answered and held the phone to her ear, asking softly, "Zoe, what's going on?"

Zoe sounded nervous. "Did you hear? Lily tried to kill herself by taking pills."

The elevator door opened. Iris walked out. "I know now. But how did you find out?"

"My brother came back from abroad suddenly last night. As soon as he got off the plane, he went to the hospital to see Lily."

"Arthur knows Lily?" Iris was shocked.

"Yeah, I'm still in shock. I pestered him all morning before he finally told me the truth."

Iris listened quietly.

Zoe's tone sounded a little ticked off. "Turns out this fake-nice girl is always cheerful and carefree, laughs nonstop, and clicks easily with guys. And she is full of hidden schemes. Deep down, she has lived with smiling depression since her teens.

"Arthur's first patient as a psychologist was her. He treated her for years. He only went abroad to study more two years ago, after he cured her. He said psychiatrists have to keep their patients' secrets, so I never knew about this."

Iris sat down on a nearby bench and listened quietly, feeling a little helpless.

When she thought about it, Lily did have a lot of tricks and was really scheming.

Everything she did was only because she loved Julian deeply. She wanted to break up her marriage and take Julian from her.

Other than that, she wasn't a terrible person.

If she put herself in Lily's shoes... They'd grown up side by side since childhood, only to lose to a late newcomer. Anyone would feel wronged and hurt.

Even the most hateful people have their sad sides.

"Iris? Are you listening?" Zoe asked.

Iris snapped back to reality. "Did Lily's parents ask Arthur to come back?"

"Probably," Zoe replied. "Arthur knows her condition better than anyone since he cured her once before. Her family must trust him completely."

"Is Arthur working at Riverfront Hospital now that he's back?"

"Yeah, Lily is currently under his care there."
