His Belated Love for the Abandoned Ex-Wife Chapter 89: The First Love Story

Iris felt like a huge weight was pressing down on her chest. She turned back to the study door, nervous and uneasy.

Julian's dad had called him home. It had to be more than just Beatrice being sick.

A bad feeling came over her. She slowly clenched her fists, her worry growing stronger by the second.

Jenny noticed her anxiety. She snorted, narrowed her eyes, and said disdainfully, "Now you're scared? Why didn't you think about your place when you bullied Lily? Our whole family treats Lily like one of our own. If it weren't for you, Lily would be Julian's wife right now."

Iris said nothing.

Jenny kept going. "Julian and Lily always got along great. So great that even I was jealous. I never saw it coming. Julian's been acting weird these days. He cut ties with Lily, fired her from being his secretary, and made Uncle Frederick so mad he could barely stand it. Just wait. You'll see how he deals with you and Julian."

Iris felt like a tight net was wrapping around her heart. She was anxious and helpless. She rubbed her fists gently, trying to think of a way to help Julian out.

But she had no idea where to start.

Just then, a strong, tanned young man walked in from outside.

"Jenny." His voice was deep and strong.

Jenny turned around. When she saw him, she jumped off the sofa excitedly, ran over, hugged his neck, and bounced up and down. "Luke! You're finally back! Did you come home for vacation, or did you leave the military?"

Iris glanced at them. The man looked tough and strong, with a straight, honest vibe. Even in casual clothes, he really did look like a soldier.

"I left the military."

"I missed you so much these six years." Jenny pouted, her voice teary.

Luke Lynch ruffled her hair, his eyes full of affection. "As soon as I got home from the military, I couldn't wait to come see you."

Jenny took his hand and sat down on the sofa.

When Luke saw Iris, he nodded politely and said, "Hi."

Iris greeted him politely too.

Luke looked at Jenny and asked quietly, "Who's this?"

Jenny waved her hand impatiently. "Don't worry about who she is. It doesn't matter. Tell me, what are your plans now that you're out of the military?"

Luke said, "I'm going to apply to be a SWAT officer. Once I have a steady job, I'll buy a house. Then I'll go to your parents and ask for your hand in marriage properly."

Jenny refused in a shy voice, "I'm only 22. I just graduated from college. I don't want to marry you yet."

Luke patted her head. "I'll wait as long as you need."

Jenny grew even shyer.

Iris felt a little awkward. She wondered if she should stand up and leave to give them some privacy.

Just then, Luke looked around. "Where's Julian? I don't see him."

Jenny pointed to the door. "He's in the study getting scolded."

"What happened?"

Jenny snorted, glared at Iris, and ground her teeth, saying each word slowly. "Because of this woman. She drove Lily into depression. Julian helped her. Now Uncle Frederick's really mad and he's chewing him out."

Right away, Luke had no good feelings left for Iris. His look at her turned a little hostile.

Iris didn't say a word to defend herself against Jenny's accusations.

She knew any explanation wouldn't work with Jenny. Jenny liked Lily and hated her.

Trying to explain more would just be a waste of breath. It might even make things worse.

Iris was too calm and quiet. She looked so composed, like there was nothing in the world that mattered to her, nothing that scared her, nothing that could make her emotional.

Her calmness only made Jenny angrier.

Jenny wanted to make Iris mad, make her lose control, and make her upset.

"Luke, you and Julian are childhood friends. You grew up together and went to school together. Do you remember his first love?" Jenny glanced at Iris out of the corner of her eye, her tone light but with a hint of provocation. She deliberately wanted to say something to make Iris unhappy.

Julian's first love?

Iris's mood clearly shifted. Her expression darkened, and she looked at Jenny.

Jenny felt encouraged, sure that Iris cared about this.

Luke smiled. "Why bring up Julian's first love?"

"Tell me! I'm curious!" Jenny shook Luke's arm.

"Didn't I tell you before?"

Jenny knelt on the sofa, leaned in close to Luke's ear, and whispered, "Tell me again. I want to make this troublemaker mad. She made Lily so miserable."

"Who is she?" Luke asked quietly.

"Some girl who's been pestering Julian. Her identity doesn't matter. What matters is she's greedy and scheming."

To Luke, that made Iris sound like a two-faced bitch.

Luke cleared his throat and said, "I know all about his first love.

"When we started 10th grade, a group of really good students from other schools came to our school. They shared their study methods and experiences. One of them was a really pretty 9th grader. That's when Julian fell in love with her at first sight. That speech was so boring, but he listened like it was the most interesting thing ever. After that, he couldn't stop thinking about her."
