His Belated Love for the Abandoned Ex-Wife Chapter 145: Tears and Truth
Julian's body shook. He opened his mouth a little to breathe, his hot breath trembling too. His red eyes were bloodshot and scary, his deep stare locked on Iris.
He was so angry he was practically falling apart. Only the last bit of his sanity kept him from losing control.
Their eyes met, red-rimmed and brimming with tears.
Julian said nothing.
Iris pushed him. "Are you getting back at me?"
"Getting back at you?" Julian let out a bitter, shocked laugh. He looked up at the ceiling, like he was trying to hold back tears. His voice was sad as he mumbled over and over, "Me, getting back at you? Huh, me getting back at..."
"You sure I cheated? If you had the guts to marry the woman who cheated on you, why didn't you have the guts to walk in and catch us back then?" Just thinking about the pain she'd been through the past two years made Iris want to break down crying.
She was the real victim.
Back then, Arthur might have drugged and raped her. But two years had gone by, and she'd lost her chance to put him in jail.
She'd been kept in the dark the whole time. Julian ignored her for two years for no reason. That punishment trapped her in a cycle of sadness and helplessness, tearing her up inside.
All the hurt she'd endured felt so stupid now.
If she really had been violated, she'd hate Arthur more than anything in the world.
And she'd never forgive Julian for staying quiet back then, for doing nothing. He'd made her lose her best shot at calling the police.
Julian snapped back, "Don't you already know why I've been holding back?"
"No, I don't."
Tears glistened in Julian's red eyes. He smiled coldly, a smile sadder than any cry. His voice was so choked up; it was almost impossible to hear. "You know I've liked you for more than ten years. How can you say you don't know?"
Iris couldn't hear him well. She wiped the tears off her cheeks and snapped, annoyed, "Can you speak up?"
Julian closed his eyes. He couldn't stop the tears. When his heart hurt the worst, two clear tears rolled down his face. His soul felt like it was dropping into a deep hole, helpless and almost insane.
He said nothing, walking right past Iris.
He carried a cold vibe, like a freezing wind that left a trail of frost behind him.
He grabbed the door and stormed out.
"Bang!"
The sound of the door slamming shut echoed from outside.
Iris jumped, scared. It felt like someone had punched a hole in her heart, bleeding nonstop with a dull pain.
Iris couldn't hold it in anymore. Tears poured down her face. She felt weak all over, like her heart had been hollowed out.
She'd never felt this terrible before.
It was like her heart was being sliced into pieces with a knife. Wave after wave of pain made her dizzy and sick to her stomach.
She squatted down weakly, hugged her knees, and buried her head. She bit her lower lip to keep from sobbing out loud.
But her tears soaked her pants, and her shoulders shook uncontrollably.
Why did it have to be this way?
She hated Arthur more than anything.
She cried for a long time, letting out all her grief. Then she got up, went to the bathroom, washed the tears off her face, and put eye masks on her puffy eyes.
She was tired from crying, so she lay down on the bed and fell asleep.
When she woke up, it was already three in the afternoon.
She was in a terrible mood. She got up, walked to the front door, and twisted the handle. She realized Julian hadn't locked it when he left.
Iris grabbed her phone and headed out.
She went to get a gynecology appointment, told the doctor about her worries, and asked for a checkup.
The gynecologist was really professional.
In the exam room, two minutes later, she was told to put her pants back on.
She asked nervously. "Doctor, I..."
The doctor took off her gloves and said, "You're fine. Everything checks out. Your hymen is intact."
As soon as she heard that, the huge weight in Iris's chest lifted.
But at the same time, she got even angrier.
Arthur had ruined her marriage and turned her and Julian against each other. But he hadn't broken any laws, so she couldn't send him to jail.
Iris took the report and left the hospital.
She took the subway to visit her dad.
In the hospital room, Keith, who'd just had surgery, was still asleep with an IV in his arm. He looked weak.
Ethan was lying beside the bed, fast asleep.
Iris didn't wanna wake him.
Just then, the attending doctor walked in. "Ms. Whitlow..."
Iris turned around quickly, putting her finger to her lips to tell the doctor to be quiet so he wouldn't wake Keith and Ethan.
The doctor nodded and waved her over.
Iris left the room and followed the doctor to his office.
As soon as she sat down, the doctor said in a hurry, "Ms. Whitlow, the surgery went well. But you've used up all the deposit. You still owe money for the surgery and medicine. You need to pay to keep getting the meds."
"How much do we owe now?" Iris asked, panicking.
Keith had cancer and was on the best imported medicine. The doctor checked the bill. "You still owe 80,000 dollars."
Iris frowned. "Eighty thousand? Didn't you tell us to pay 150 thousand last time?"
The doctor said, "Your brother sold his shop for a low price to raise money."
Iris froze, her chest feeling tight and heavy.
The doctor said, "Even though you owe 80,000 now, that's not nearly enough. The follow-up treatment, checkups, chemotherapy, and medicine will cost at least 100,000 more. You should start raising the money now, just in case."
