His Belated Love for the Abandoned Ex-Wife Chapter 52: Uninvited Guests
Once the car left Rosehill Estate, Iris said weakly, "If it's out of your way, just drop me off outside the subway station."
Julian said, "I'm going home, not the company."
Iris fell silent, not saying a word.
The bustling street scenes outside the window flashed by. The golden trumpet flowers by the road were bright and vivid, falling to the ground, crushed and broken by speeding cars.
An hour later, they turned onto the road near their home. Julian asked hoarsely, "Back to the lab, or home?"
"The lab," Iris replied softly.
The car stopped at the institution gate. Iris unbuckled her seatbelt, grabbed her bag, and got ready to get out.
Her hand had just touched the door handle when Julian leaned back in his seat, his deep, cold voice ringing out.
"You were pushed to get a divorce. You have nothing to say to me?"
Iris was in a bad mood. His question made her nose tingle, but she forced a calm tone. "I've decided to hand the special drug project over to the government. It won't change. As for whether you want to divorce me, talk it over with your dad and let me know."
"Did I marry my dad?" Julian shot back.
"No matter the result, I don't care," Iris said and then got out of the car.
Julian got out of the driver's seat too, grabbed her arm, and pulled her in front of him.
His grip was tight, making her arm ache faintly.
His face was dark, his aura icy. "You don't care?"
Iris was overwhelmed by his sudden outburst; her heart trembled, and an inexplicable panic rose inside her. She looked up at him.
Is he this mad because I refuse to partner with Everhart Group? Or because I said I don't care?
Julian's eyes shone with a sharp, intense light as he stared at her.
Iris appeared calm and fragile on the surface, but her eyes held unshakable firmness, exuding a cold, quiet, almost lifeless aura.
Julian's breath grew a little heavy. He stood there for a long time, unable to say another word.
In the tense, cold standoff, a man's voice suddenly called from far away. "Iris! Perfect timing. We got the bacterial culture done. There's a new discovery!"
As the man walked over, Julian slowly let go of Iris's arm.
"Who's this?" the man asked politely.
Their marriage was almost over. Iris didn't know what to call Julian anymore.
She didn't introduce him to her new colleague. Still angry, she turned around and walked straight into the institution.
The male colleague nodded slightly at Julian, then turned to catch up with Iris, walking side by side with her.
Julian's eyes dimmed. He smirked, a bitter, cold laugh escaping his lips.
He got back in the car and slammed the door shut with a loud "bang."
The force was heavy, the sound echoing.
The next morning...
Iris was eating breakfast when the doorbell rang.
She put down her fork and got up to answer it.
Outside the door, Lily was wearing a black business suit dress, holding two bags of breakfast in her hands. Her face was heavily made up, and she smiled brightly.
"Good morning, Iris!"
Seeing someone so annoying first thing in the morning made Iris's chest feel stuffy. She replied faintly, "Morning."
"I'm here to pick Julian up for work, and I brought him breakfast too," Lily said, walking into the house without even thinking about changing her shoes.
Iris held back her anger and closed the door.
Lily put the breakfast on the table. When she saw the other plate of breakfast—two boiled eggs and a sandwich—her expression turned disdainful.
"Iris, you don't have to make breakfast for Julian anymore. I'll take care of that." Lily pulled transparent breakfast boxes out of the bag, lining them up. There were five different kinds, meat and vegetables, looking quite lavish.
Iris didn't say anything. She sat back down and kept eating her egg, her heart feeling more and more stuffy.
"My nanny made these herself—nutritious, healthy, clean, and delicious." Lily finished arranging them, then looked at Iris. "Do you want me to bring you a portion too?"
"No." Iris put the leftover egg yolk on the plate, picked up another egg, tapped it gently against the table, and peeled it carefully.
Lily stared at Iris, the smile on her face growing stiffer.
She couldn't figure it out. Iris was just wearing a plain shirt and pants, her long hair tied back, no makeup on her face, and not a single accessory on her body, but she had an elegant, pure beauty that stood out.
Her face wasn't puffy, nor did she have dark circles. Her skin was smooth and flawless, with no blemishes or acne at all.
She was cold and calm, like a fairy who didn't belong in the mortal world.
Even as a woman, she was drawn to her. How could Julian not fall for her, living with her every day?
Just thinking about it made Lily angry, jealousy burning inside her. She forced a smile and sat down in front of Iris. "Iris, to make my job easier, can you tell me the password to the front door?"
Iris's fingers paused as she peeled the egg.
Lily explained, "Starting today, I'm Julian's personal secretary. I'll take care of every little thing, both in his life and work. I'll make sure his life and work are well-organized."
Iris put down the egg, picked up a glass of water, took a sip to moisten her throat, and said softly, "Ms. Prescott, I don't care about your work matters. But please don't disturb my life."
