His Belated Love for the Abandoned Ex-Wife Chapter 247: Wrong Target
Iris didn't raise her voice, but there was something in the way she stood there, steady, unflinching, that cut through the situation faster than shouting ever could. One hand held the takeout, the other locked firmly around Jenny's arm as she looked straight at the man.
"Her name is Jenny Everhart," she said, calm but sharp. "Her dad is a VP at Everhart Group, her husband's a federal tactical unit commander, and her cousins run companies bigger than you've probably ever stepped foot in. You really want to tell me you're her friend? You sure you want to put her in your car and drive off like this?"
The man hesitated, his confidence slipping.
Iris didn't give him time to recover. She pulled out her phone. "Or I can call her husband right now, and you can explain it to him in person. Your call."
That did it.
The man swallowed, shoved Jenny toward Iris like she was something he needed to get rid of, then bolted for his car and took off without another word.
Jenny's weight collapsed against her, and Iris staggered back a step, barely catching her. She tightened her grip, steadying both of them before they went down.
"Hey, stay with me," Iris said under her breath, quickly checking Jenny's pockets. "Where's your phone? Your bag?"
Jenny couldn't answer. Her eyes fluttered weakly, tears slipping down her temples as her fingers clutched Iris's shirt with surprising strength, like she was holding onto the only thing keeping her afloat.
Iris exhaled, thinking fast. She only had Julian's number, and he wasn't even in town. Calling him now wouldn't help.
A cab passed by.
She waved it down immediately.
By the time they reached Rosehill Estate, the sky had already dimmed into early evening.
Iris got out first and hit the intercom. A moment later, May opened the gate, her face lighting up in surprise. "Iris? You came to see Beatrice? Come on in..."
"Not today," Iris cut in gently but urgently. "I found Jenny outside a club. Something's off, she passed out in the car. I need help getting her inside."
May rushed to the back seat and tried to lift Jenny, but it was no use. She turned and ran toward the house, already shouting. "Gloria! Martin! Something's wrong, Jenny passed out, come quick!"
The response was immediate.
Doors opened, voices overlapped, footsteps rushed forward all at once. Frederick, Vivian, Gloria, Martin, Harold, Irene, and Caleb all appeared within seconds. The moment they saw Iris, there was a flicker of surprise, but it vanished the second they saw Jenny unconscious in the car.
Caleb moved first, lifting Jenny into his arms and carrying her inside without hesitation.
Iris barely had time to follow before Gloria was on her, grabbing her wrist so hard it stung. "What did you do to my daughter?" she snapped, her voice rising fast.
Iris met her eyes, unshaken. "I saw her being taken into a car by a guy outside a club. I don't know if she was drunk or drugged, but I stopped him and brought her back."
Gloria let out a harsh laugh, disbelief written all over her face. "My daughter doesn't run around drinking with random men. She's married. You think you can pull something like this and then spin a story? What is this, revenge? She didn't like you before, so now you're going after her?"
Iris pulled her wrist free, her patience thinning. "Believe whatever you want."
She turned to leave, but Gloria grabbed her again, harder this time. "You're not going anywhere. Not until my daughter wakes up. If anything happens to her, you're not walking away from this."
Iris tried to pull free, but Gloria dragged her toward the house with sheer force. She stopped resisting after a second, her free hand instinctively pressing against her stomach. She wasn't risking anything.
Behind them, the cab driver called out, annoyed. "Hey, you still owe me for the ride!"
Iris closed her eyes briefly, irritation flashing. "I'm not leaving. Let go. I need to pay him and grab my stuff."
Gloria didn't release her, just dragged her back to the car. Iris paid quickly, grabbed the containers, and was hauled inside.
Jenny was already laid out on the couch, surrounded by anxious faces. A family doctor was checking her vitals, speaking in low, serious tones.
Upstairs, Beatrice made her way down, slow but determined. She barely glanced at Jenny before her eyes locked onto Iris, and everything else seemed to fall away.
"Iris..." Her voice trembled.
She crossed the room as quickly as she could and took Iris's hands, gripping them tightly. "It's really you."
Iris softened immediately. "Hi, Grandma. It's been a while."
Beatrice's eyes filled with tears. "Ever since you left, you never came back to see me. Do you know how much I've missed you?"
A quiet ache settled in Iris's chest. "I'm sorry."
"Come sit with me," Beatrice said, already pulling her away from the chaos. The living room was too crowded, so she guided her toward the dining area instead.
Iris set the food down just as her stomach gave her away with a quiet growl.
Beatrice blinked. "You haven't eaten yet?"
Iris smiled faintly and shook her head.
"I'll have May cook something," Beatrice said, starting to stand.
"No, it's okay," Iris stopped her gently. "I brought food back from a restaurant. Can I just eat here?"
"Of course you can," Beatrice said immediately, already opening the containers and setting everything out like it mattered more than anything else happening in the house.
