His Belated Love for the Abandoned Ex-Wife Chapter 229: Unsaid Tension
Julian stepped forward, extending his hand with a controlled, unreadable expression. "Julian Everhart," he said. "Iris's ex-husband."
Brandon didn't hesitate. He shook his hand with an easy, composed smile. "Brandon Whitmore. Not a coworker," he added, his tone calm but deliberate. "A friend. Iris invited me to dinner."
The shift was immediate.
Julian's expression tightened, the color draining just slightly from his face as silence settled over him.
Lily caught it, of course. A faint, satisfied curve touched her lips before she turned to Brandon, her voice warm on the surface, though the edge beneath it was impossible to miss. "It's not easy getting someone like Iris to step away from work for something like this," she said. "You must mean a lot to her. I'm Lily."
Brandon gave a polite nod. "Nice to meet you."
Iris felt the pressure building in her chest, tight and uncomfortable, like the air had turned too heavy to breathe properly. She exhaled slowly, turning slightly toward Brandon. "Let's go," she said under her breath.
"Miss Whitlow," Lily called after her, her tone light, almost gentle, but unmistakably calculated. "I know Julian loves you. I'm not denying that."
She took a step forward, her voice lowering just enough to sound intimate rather than confrontational. "But we've known each other for over twenty years. What he feels for me, whether it's love, loyalty, or something in between, it's not something you can just dismiss."
Iris stopped.
Lily continued, her expression softening in a way that felt practiced. "So maybe don't put him in a position where he has to choose. If you keep pushing him like that... it's only going to make my condition worse."
Julian's face darkened immediately. "Lily, that's enough," he said sharply.
Iris didn't turn around right away. She stood still, shoulders rigid, drawing in a slow breath as anger settled deep under her skin, not explosive, but steady and suffocating. Her hands curled slightly at her sides.
Before she could respond, Brandon let out a quiet, almost amused breath. "That's impressive," he said, his tone light but unmistakably pointed. "I've heard emotional pressure before, but that was... unusually polished."
Lily's expression snapped, irritation flashing as she turned toward him, ready to respond.
"Polished?" another voice cut in from the entrance. "That was straight-up manipulative."
Everyone turned.
Zoe walked in with purpose, her posture relaxed but her presence impossible to ignore. She wore a simple white blouse and a black skirt, her hair tied back, no makeup, but she carried herself with a confidence that didn't need it. Her voice was clear, sharp, and unapologetic as she stepped up beside Iris.
"Your health is your business," Zoe said, looking directly at Lily. "It has nothing to do with Iris. She's not your family, she's not responsible for you, and she definitely doesn't owe you emotional labor."
She didn't pause.
"If you're not feeling well, go see a doctor. Don't stand here trying to guilt people into doing what you want. That's not concern, that's manipulation."
Lily's hand started to shake, her face flushing unevenly as she pointed at Zoe. "You—"
"What?" Zoe shot back immediately. "You expect everyone to just play along?"
The words landed harder than expected.
Lily's breathing suddenly turned uneven, her chest rising too fast as her face lost color, her body stiffening in a way that made the shift impossible to ignore.
"Lily?" Julian stepped forward instantly, grabbing her arm, his expression tightening as he realized something was wrong.
Brandon's tone changed, clinical and focused. "That looks like stress-triggered breathing difficulty. She needs to get to a hospital."
Julian didn't waste a second. He steadied Lily and moved quickly toward the exit, his attention fully on her.
Zoe watched them go, the sharpness in her expression fading into something more uncertain. She swallowed, glancing at Iris. "I didn't... overdo it, did I?" she asked, her voice quieter now. "She's not actually going to collapse or something?"
Iris gave a small, reassuring smile, reaching for her hand. "She'll be fine."
But her eyes followed Julian.
He moved fast, focused, his entire attention on Lily.
It was obvious.
He cared.
Iris kept her expression neutral, but something in her chest tightened anyway, a dull ache she couldn't quite push down. The faint smile faded as she looked away.
Why does that still bother me...
Zoe nudged her lightly, pulling her out of it. "Okay, hold on," she murmured, leaning closer. "Who is he? Because... I'm just saying, he's not exactly losing to Julian in the looks department. What's going on there?"
Iris blinked, immediately shaking her head. "Nothing like that. He's a senior from school, Brandon. He helped me out before, so this is just dinner to thank him."
Zoe studied him more carefully, clearly trying to place him.
Brandon stepped closer, a soft smile forming. "It's been a while, Zoe."
She stared at him for a second, then her eyes widened. "Wait... oh my God, you're Brandon from Student Council, right? The one who dressed up as a zombie for that campus event and scared me on the walkway?"
Brandon gave an awkward nod, a hint of embarrassment slipping through.
The tension eased just enough for Iris to let out a small laugh. "Well, that explains a lot. Sounds like you two have history."
Zoe frowned immediately. "Not good history," she muttered. "He scared me on purpose. Tried to apologize later, sent gifts and everything. I didn't accept any of it."
Brandon tilted his head slightly. "Still holding that against me?"
Zoe paused, then shrugged, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Honestly? I almost forgot. So no."
Brandon didn't respond, just watched her quietly.
Zoe turned back to Iris, nudging her shoulder. "If he treats you right, I won't hate him," she said casually.
Something flickered in Brandon's eyes.
Iris reacted instantly. "Zoe, it's really not like that—"
"Relax," Zoe cut in, linking her arm through Iris's and steering her back inside. "I get it. Just don't rush into anything this time."
