When the Moon No Longer Answers the Wolf Chapter 13
When Aurora woke up, she was in a place so dark she couldn't see her own hand. What unsettled her was the discovery that her power was gone.
For a werewolf who relied on power in battle, she was now a toothless tiger.
Aurora steadied herself. She had come this far; she could only take it one step at a time. She would succeed.
She walked toward the only source of light. At the end, the space opened up, and she found herself in a valley filled with flowers of every color.
Aurora didn't relax. The sudden appearance of such a beautiful place in this desolate land was full of strangeness.
She cautiously walked forward and saw a thatched hut.
As she approached, she saw signs of life.
The wooden door creaked open. A long, slender, pale hand pushed it from the inside, and the owner of the hut was revealed.
Aurora stood on guard as the person emerged. He had fair skin, a handsome face, high nose, and thin lips, especially a pair of soulful peach-blossom eyes that shimmered when he looked at someone. He was beautiful in a way that transcended gender.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?"
The person spoke. It was a man. He slowly stood up, and only then did Aurora realize that despite his beauty, he was tall and well-built.
She didn't answer, retorting, "And who are you?"
The man leisurely walked to a lounge chair in the yard and sat down.
"Since you're here, you must be here to complete the Moon Goddess Ritual. In that case, I suppose I'm your senior. I arrived about a thousand years before you."
A thousand years. That made him about Kaelen's age. Why was he still cultivating?
Aurora looked at him suspiciously. "You're not young. Are you still cultivating here?"
Since power was suppressed in this place, they were no different from mortals. Just from that short walk, Aurora was already starting to feel hungry.
She hadn't felt hunger since she had stopped needing to eat.
If this man hadn't passed the ritual, he would just be an ordinary person. How could he have lived here for two thousand years?
The man gave her a "you don't understand me" look.
"My friend, you don't get it. My cultivation is different from yours. I don't like dealing with people. Here, I can train and no one bothers me. What could be better?"
"I made a breakthrough in my cultivation, so I decided to stay here."
Aurora thought about it and found that it made a surprising amount of sense.
As long as he wasn't a threat, she had no interest in his secrets.
She bowed her head. "My apologies. May I ask what this place is and what its rules are?"
The man closed his eyes and leaned back in his chair.
"Trying to get information out of me, are you?"
"Fine, I'll tell you. Everyone has their own path anyway."
"You should seek enlightenment here. The day you have a breakthrough and figure it out, your path will be complete."
"Also, my name is Victor."
Aurora understood that he was teasing her, but she wasn't annoyed. In fact, there was no point in being annoyed. They had no power here. Were they going to fight with their bare hands? She didn't have time for that.
She found a cave, cleaned it up a bit, and began to meditate.
There was no sense of time in the mountains.
Aurora's days were spent cultivating, bickering with Victor, then cultivating some more, and bickering again.
The reason she had to go to Victor's place was that she couldn't cook and had to rely on him for food. In return, she took on the task of finding ingredients.
Thus, the Council's only Enforcer had to hunt in addition to her cultivation.
Over time, through many conversations and meals, they developed a decent friendship.
But they both knew it only existed within this valley. They were still wearing masks when they spoke to each other.
Until one day, the valley shook violently, and Aurora was startled from her meditation.
"What's happening?"
Victor shook his head. "I don't know. I'll go check."
Worried that something had gone wrong on the battlefield, Aurora left the ritual ground as well.
