When the Moon No Longer Answers the Wolf Chapter 17
Kaelen stared at her, his voice barely a whisper.
"What did you say?"
Aurora turned away from him and looked at Victor.
"I'm sorry you had to see that."
Victor waved his hand, feigning indifference.
"Not at all. I've been living here for so many years, it's been a long time since I've seen such a drama. Please continue, pretend I'm not here."
Aurora fell silent. Was this man genuinely clueless or just pretending? Couldn't he take a hint?
The last thread of Kaelen's sanity snapped at the sight of Victor and Aurora's intimate exchange.
He was furious, instinctively trying to summon his power to banish this man who was getting too close to his treasure. But nothing happened.
Aurora shook her head. "Kaelen, don't waste your energy. All power is suppressed here."
Otherwise, she wouldn't be having this awkward conversation about her past with Kaelen in front of Victor.
It was because she couldn't drive away this nosy man, nor could she create a barrier to avoid him.
Because of Kaelen's attempt to use his power, the ritual ground's wards seemed to have detected an unwelcome presence, and energy was beginning to flow around them.
Kaelen knew it was a warning. If he didn't leave soon, the consequences would be severe. After all, he was now an ordinary man with no power.
But he was unwilling to leave just like that.
He had finally seen Aurora. The month she had been gone had been like an endless nightmare.
It had only been a month, but it had been harder to endure than all his past millennia. Every fiber of his being was screaming at him to lock Aurora by his side and never let her go again.
Kaelen didn't delve deeper into what this meant. He was afraid the answer would shatter the beliefs he had held onto for so long.
But right now, he didn't want Aurora to stay here. She should go with him.
Leaving Aurora here with Victor… He didn't know what had happened when he wasn't here, and now that he knew, was he supposed to just let it continue?
"Aurora, come back with me."
He remembered something and took the red cord from his neck. Luckily, he hadn't put it in his storage space, or he wouldn't be able to get it out without power.
Kaelen held the necklace out to Aurora like a precious treasure. "Look, the Moonheart Stone isn't lost. I kept it safe. And this red cord… I didn't wear it with Seraphina."
He touched his nose awkwardly. "I'm returning this to you. Don't be angry anymore."
Aurora’s eyes reddened. She took the necklace and gently caressed the Moonheart Stone, feeling the warmth and familiarity radiating from it, as if her parents were still by her side.
Then, she handed it back.
Kaelen stared at her, stunned. "Aurora, why are you..."
"It's not necessary, Kaelen."
Aurora interrupted him, tearing her gaze away from the Moonheart Stone, her eyes devoid of any emotion.
"I had intended to give it to you as a gift. The sacred object of my Silvermoon pack, as repayment for all your years of guidance. From now on, let's go our separate ways and never meet again."
Kaelen couldn't accept this. "No, I won't take your things, and I won't sever ties with you. We've been together for so many years. You're more important to me than my own life. I would abandon anyone but you."
Seeing that Aurora was unmoved, Kaelen was about to say more when he was suddenly immobilized by a force and vanished in the blink of an eye.
Aurora was worried. No matter what, Kaelen had raised her for so many years and had been with her through her toughest times.
They had indeed reached the end of their road, and there were countless rifts between them, but the good times had been real.
She didn't want anything to happen to Kaelen.
"Don't worry."
Victor looked away, placed the ointment in Aurora’s hand, and walked toward his hut.
"Every place has its own rules, and those rules are upheld by the will of the world. You can think of the wards here as the world's will."
"Your uncle meant no harm to this place. The wards will only push him away, not hurt him."
He suddenly turned his head and smiled, his meaning unclear. "The law of heartlessness is not truly heartless."
"Aurora, what law are you cultivating? Have you figured it out yet?"
