When the Moon No Longer Answers the Wolf Chapter 25

Aurora and Victor followed the horse to her family's mansion. Waving off the servants, they crouched outside her father's study.

The study was heavily guarded with guards and traps, not easy to get into.

They were only able to get in thanks to a doggy door hidden by vines on one side of the wall.

Aurora had dug it herself, just in case, for a day like this.

Inside the study, they heard a soldier's report.

"City Lord, Rus City has fallen. The Northern army is marching south. Only Hong City stands between them and us. They won't be able to hold them off. The war will soon reach Greystone City."

Her father sighed. "The entire country's resources were poured into Rus City, hoping to hold the pass. I never thought we would still lose."

"City Lord, what should we do now?"

A sharp glint appeared in her father's eyes.

"What should we do? Defend the city!"

"The Northern wolf army is ruthless. Every city they've conquered has been left with bodies strewn everywhere, a scene of devastation. If we fight to the death, we might have a chance. If we surrender, we'll likely be massacred."

"Either way, it's death. We might as well fight."

"Yes! I understand."

As the two were about to leave, Victor suddenly pulled the rising Aurora down, and she fell right into his arms.

Before Aurora could struggle, Victor pointed outside.

Aurora looked and saw her mother approaching. She stayed quietly in his arms.

After the soldier left, her mother entered, and her father explained the situation.

Her mother's voice was filled with sorrow. "I'm not worried about myself. I've lived a long life. I don't mind going with you."

"But what about our daughter? She's so young, just married the man she loves."

Her father sighed. "That's why I was in such a hurry to marry her off. I never thought she'd bring a husband home."

Their original plan was to keep Aurora by their side and find her a husband who would live with them. With them around, their daughter wouldn't be bullied.

That's why they had ignored everyone's opinions and hadn't pushed Aurora to marry.

But the situation had changed. When they sensed the instability, they had rushed to marry her off.

Now, everyone thought her parents had given in to family pressure and hastily married her off, but that wasn't the case.

They had resisted the elders for so long, so they weren't afraid. But when they learned of the political turmoil and that Greystone City was no longer safe, they began to look for a way out for Aurora.

Their only criterion was someone who could protect her.

Her father closed his eyes. "Fate is cruel, so cruel."

Her mother shook her head. "Aurora’s happiness is also important. We can't have her escape the war only to fall into a den of wolves."

On the other side of the wall, Aurora finally understood why her usually indulgent parents were in such a hurry to marry her off.

Her eyes reddened, and she suppressed a sob, quickly getting up and leaving.

If she stayed any longer, she was afraid she would break down and cry.

After all these years, Aurora finally understood what it meant for parents to love their child and plan for their future.

She leaned against a pavilion, tilting her head back to hold back her tears.

Victor followed her, standing silently by her side.

After a long moment, he took out a handkerchief and wiped her tears, his other hand awkwardly patting her back.

Aurora wiped away the tears that kept streaming down her face, her voice still trembling.

"I have to defend this place."

Victor said nothing, only took her shoulder and turned her to face him, their eyes meeting.

"I'm with you."
