When the Moon No Longer Answers the Wolf Chapter 6
Aurora returned to her room and put the red dress away. After much hesitation, she decided she wanted a proper goodbye with Kaelen.
There was one last thing she wanted to give him, a token of gratitude for the years he had cared for her in place of her parents.
But when she opened the wooden box, it was empty.
The sacred object of their Silvermoon pack—the Moonheart Stone—was gone.
Wearing the stone purified the bearer's bloodline and greatly enhanced their power.
It was not only her most precious possession but also the only thing her parents had left her.
And now, the Moonheart Stone was missing.
A chill ran down Aurora’s spine as she sensed Kaelen’s lingering aura inside the box.
She took the box and went out. In the courtyard, Seraphina was nowhere to be seen. Only Kaelen was there.
Seeing the box, Kaelen understood why she had come and admitted it freely. "A few days ago, Seraphina hit a bottleneck in her training. I took your Moonheart Stone for her to absorb."
"You weren't here, and I forgot to tell you. I owe you a favor now."
"You can ask for anything you want as compensation."
His casual words made Aurora’s heart sink to the depths.
The Moonheart Stone only needed to be worn, yet he had carelessly given it to Seraphina and even helped her absorb it into her body, leaving not even a trace behind.
"Do you know that the Moonheart Stone was a relic from my parents, Kaelen?" Aurora asked, her voice trembling.
Kaelen nodded. "Of course, I do. That's why you can ask for any compensation you want."
Seeing his nonchalant expression, Aurora felt as if her entire heart was being devoured by countless ants.
She forced a smile and shook her head. "No, thank you."
She had intended to use the sacred stone to repay Kaelen's kindness.
Now that he had given it to the woman he loved, the unrepayable debt of his care was settled.
"I have only one request. Today is my birthday. Can you spend it with me tonight?"
Since her confession, Kaelen had never celebrated her birthday with her again.
In the cold, empty manor, she couldn't even get a warm piece of cake.
She just wanted him to be with her for this last one.
Kaelen paused, seeming to have forgotten her birthday entirely.
He frowned, a strange feeling rising in him, a premonition that something would happen tonight.
"Aurora, I'm warning you, don't have any more ideas."
Aurora bit her lip. "I don't. I promise."
She just wanted a formal farewell, even if he didn't know it.
Kaelen stared at her. For some reason, he couldn't bring himself to refuse again.
After a long silence, he said in a stiff tone, "Fine."
Aurora let out a sigh of relief. "Good. Then we'll meet in the main hall tonight."
Kaelen said nothing and turned to leave.
Once he was gone, Aurora called a servant and asked them to prepare some dishes.
Then she returned to her room, packed up the last of her belongings, and threw them out.
Now, there was truly no trace of her left in Blackwood Manor.
She had always been a guest here. She had arrived with nothing, and she would leave with nothing.
After that, Aurora went to the kitchen and personally cooked a feast for Kaelen.
As evening fell, Aurora set the table.
Time ticked by, and soon the sky grew dark.
She knew how much Kaelen disliked being with her, so she didn't expect him to arrive early for dinner.
But… in just a few hours, she would be gone.
Just then, she heard footsteps behind her.
She turned to see Kaelen and Seraphina walking in together.
"Soon, Seraphina will be the lady of this manor. We'll celebrate your birthday together."
Aurora scoffed silently. She knew Kaelen still didn't trust her. He thought that if they were alone, she would try something, so he brought Seraphina.
It was a precaution and a warning.
She suppressed the sourness rising in her chest and forced a smile. "Thank you, Kaelen. And thank you, Seraphina."
Seraphina eagerly took her arm. "Aurora, I didn't know it was your birthday. I didn't have time to prepare a gift, but I'll make it up to you."
"Kaelen told me you accepted the dress. I'm so happy."
Aurora’s smile froze on her face.
Suddenly, fireworks exploded in the dark, silent night sky.
*Boom! Boom!*
Pink fireworks instantly filled the sky, capturing the attention of all three.
Seraphina sighed. "So beautiful."
Kaelen’s face darkened. "Aurora, what is this?"
Aurora pinched her palm. On her one-hundredth birthday, Kaelen had set off a firework display for her over Starlight Falls that had stunned the entire wolf world.
She had thought then that she was the only one he cared for.
But now he loved another, so she decided to give this firework display back to him.
The past was the past. Everyone had to move on.
Aurora raised her hand and cast a spell, writing words in the dark sky—*May your bond last forever, and may you find happiness and peace.*
Then she turned to Kaelen and smiled softly. "Kaelen, I wish you an eternal union, bound together for all lifetimes."
"From the bottom of my heart, I hope you will be happy…"
