The Choice Chapter 24
"A sandstorm? You're killing me! Where's this sandstorm coming from?"
"I can leave any second now—what's your angle?"
"And an underground passage? Show us then!"
The shrew ignored soldiers' attempts to restrain her, cursing before trying to board again.
"Believe it or don't! Just five minutes—you'll know in five minutes!"
I looked at the officer sincerely, hoping he'd wait. After all, this was hundreds of lives. I had to try.
Plus without soldiers clearing the way, going down that passage alone was suicide.
"Fine. Five minutes!"
The officer looked at me and directly stopped the boarding. I hadn't expected him to actually believe me—I was just trying.
But he actually agreed.
"Even if you're making it up, I'm waiting anyway! Especially them—they haven't left the helicopter all day!"
The officer pointed at the cockpit, looking at his comrades with deep concern in his voice.
Right. Soldiers were human too. They got tired.
Five minutes—rather than trusting me, he was just finding an excuse for a short break.
"Where's this passage?"
The officer asked tentatively.
I led several soldiers to have them excavate a specific spot in the rubble's northwest corner.
Sure enough, a passage appeared before everyone's eyes.
"There really is one? This is incredible!"
"If we'd known about this passage, why'd we stay hidden?"
"Could what you said be true?!"
Those who'd sneered mockingly now gaped, believing me a bit more.
Only that shrew kept arguing with soldiers, insisting on boarding immediately.
"It's getting dark. There really is a sandstorm. That was close!"
A middle-aged man with glasses patted his chest, looking at me gratefully.
