Luna. Chapter 12
(Lyra's POV)
Three days passed peacefully at Mountain Cross. I was beginning to think that maybe, just maybe, I could build a life here. Magnus was respectful but attentive, the pack members were welcoming, and Dr. Elena assured me daily that the baby was thriving.
Then Sarah knocked on my door with another official-looking envelope.
"From Iron Claw Pack," she said apologetically. "Delivered by messenger."
My hands shook as I opened it, recognizing the formal letterhead immediately. But this time, it wasn't from Kael.
"Request for Luna's Final Wish - Seraphina Nightshade, Luna of Iron Claw Pack"
I read the document twice, trying to process what I was seeing. According to pack law, a new Luna had the right to make one official request during her first month in power - a tradition meant to help establish her authority and show her priorities for the pack.
Seraphina was using her Luna's wish to demand my exile from all neighboring territories.
"That clever bitch," I whispered, sinking onto my bed.
A soft knock interrupted my shock. "Lyra? May I come in?" Magnus's voice carried concern.
"Come in," I called, holding up the document. "You need to see this."
Magnus read quickly, his expression growing darker with each line. "She's trying to make it impossible for you to stay anywhere in the region."
"Can she do that? Legally?"
"The Luna's wish is traditionally honored between allied packs," Magnus admitted reluctantly. "But the wording here is questionable. She's asking for exile based on 'threats to pack security' - but you're not charged with any actual crime."
"She doesn't need me charged with a crime. She just needs the other Alphas to believe I'm dangerous." I laughed bitterly. "A pregnant woman who tells lies is apparently a threat to everyone's security."
Magnus set the document aside and sat in the chair across from me. "There's something you need to know about the Luna's wish tradition."
"What?"
"It can be challenged by another Luna of equal or higher standing." His dark eyes were thoughtful. "But it requires formal acceptance of Luna status in a recognized pack."
My heart started racing. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying that if you accepted Luna status here, you could counter her request with one of your own."
"Magnus, I can't ask you to—"
"You're not asking. I'm offering." He leaned forward, his expression serious. "The luna's wish works both ways. If you formally accept Luna status in Mountain Cross, you could request that Iron Claw Pack honor the traditional protection laws for pregnant females."
"But that would mean..."
"It would mean a formal mate bond between us, yes." Magnus's voice was steady, matter-of-fact. "It doesn't have to be... romantic. But it would give you legal standing to protect yourself and your child."
I stared at him, overwhelmed. "Why would you do that? You barely know me."
"I know enough." Magnus stood and moved to the window. "I know you're brave enough to stand up for the truth even when everyone turns against you. I know you're strong enough to put your child's welfare above your own comfort. And I know that what happened to you was wrong."
"But a mate bond... that's not something you just undo when it's convenient."
"No, it isn't." He turned back to me. "Which is why I'm only offering if you're certain this is what you want. Not just as escape from Seraphina's politics, but as a genuine choice for your future."
Before I could respond, another knock interrupted us. This time it was Beta Harrison, looking grim.
"Alpha, we have a problem. Alpha Williams from Crescent Moon Pack is here. He's requesting an audience about the Luna's wish document."
Magnus's jaw tightened. "Already?"
"Seraphina's been busy," Harrison confirmed. "From what I can gather, she's contacted every pack leader in the region personally."
"Demanding they honor her request?"
"Demanding they choose sides."
Magnus turned back to me. "Lyra, we don't have much time. If neighboring packs start officially supporting Seraphina's request, it will become much harder to challenge."
"How much time?"
"Hours, maybe less." Magnus moved closer. "I need your answer now. Will you accept Luna status here and fight this with me?"
I thought of Kael, probably sitting in his office while Seraphina orchestrated my complete exile from the region. I thought of my baby, innocent and deserving of protection.
And Magnus, a man who barely knew me but was willing to sacrifice his freedom to protect me and my child.
"Yes," I said firmly. "I accept."
Magnus nodded once, then called to Harrison. "Prepare for an emergency Luna ceremony. Full pack witness, all the formal requirements."
"How quickly?" Harrison asked.
"Within the hour." Magnus's tone brooked no argument. "And send word to every neighboring pack that Mountain Cross will be making a formal announcement regarding the Luna's wish controversy."
As Harrison hurried away, Magnus turned back to me. "Are you certain about this?"
"No," I admitted. "But I'm certain that I won't let her drive me away from my child's chance at a safe home."
"Then let's go make you a Luna."
Two hours later, I stood in Mountain Cross's great hall wearing a simple white dress that Sarah had somehow produced on short notice. The entire pack had gathered, along with representatives from three neighboring packs who'd arrived to witness the ceremony.
Magnus stood beside me in formal Alpha attire, looking every inch the powerful leader he was. The pack elder, a ancient woman named Grandmother Willow, held the ceremonial objects - a silver circlet, a crystal pendant, and an ornate knife for the blood binding.
"We gather tonight to witness the joining of Alpha Magnus Steele and Luna Lyra," Grandmother Willow announced. "Let any who object speak now or hold their peace."
Silence filled the hall. The visiting pack representatives watched with intense interest, no doubt planning their reports back to their Alphas.
"Alpha Magnus, do you take this woman as your mate and Luna, to protect and honor above all others?"
"I do," Magnus said clearly.
"Luna Lyra, do you take this man as your mate and Alpha, to stand beside him and serve his pack as your own?"
I looked out at the faces watching me - curious, hopeful, some skeptical. Then I looked at Magnus, who was offering me safety and respect if not love.
"I do."
Grandmother Willow smiled and held up the silver circlet. "Then by the power of the old laws, I name you Luna of Mountain Cross Pack."
As the circlet settled on my head, I felt a subtle shift in the air around me. The pack bond settled into place, connecting me to every wolf present. It was different from the mate bond I'd had with Kael - less intimate but still real.
Magnus took my hand for the final part of the ceremony - the blood binding that would formalize our leadership partnership. The small cut on my palm stung as our blood mingled, sealing the bond.
"It is done," Grandmother Willow announced. "Behold your Alpha and Luna!"
The pack erupted in cheers and howls of approval. But I was focused on Magnus, searching his face for any sign of regret.
Instead, I saw determination and something that might have been satisfaction.
"Are you ready for the next part?" he asked quietly.
"Which is?"
"Exercising your Luna's wish to counter Seraphina's request."
I straightened, feeling the weight of the circlet and the responsibility it represented. "What exactly am I requesting?"
"That all packs in the region honor the ancient protection laws for pregnant females and their children, regardless of the political circumstances surrounding their rejection."
It was brilliant. Not only would it counter Seraphina's attempt to exile me, but it would establish a precedent that protected other vulnerable wolves in similar situations.
Grandmother Willow stepped forward with a formal document already prepared. "Luna Lyra, as is your right in the first month of your rule, do you wish to make a formal request of the neighboring packs?"
"I do." I took the document, my voice carrying clearly through the hall. "I request that all allied packs honor the ancient protection laws for pregnant females, ensuring safe haven and support regardless of political disputes between their former and current packs."
The visiting representatives were already taking notes, no doubt recognizing the political implications. Seraphina had forced their hand, but now they had to choose between supporting a new Luna's reasonable request for protection or siding with what essentially amounted to persecution of a pregnant woman.
"Let this Luna's wish be recorded and distributed to all allied packs," Grandmother Willow announced.
As the ceremony concluded and the pack began to celebrate, Magnus leaned close to me.
"Well played, Luna. Seraphina won't be expecting this."
"Do you think it will work?"
"I think she just learned that you're not as helpless as she assumed." Magnus's smile was sharp and satisfied. "And I think she's about to discover that making you an enemy was a very poor choice."
