Luna. Chapter 182
(Lyra's POV)
I was reviewing rescue plans with Magnus when General Cassius knocked on our front door at exactly noon. No warning, no appointment, no courtesy call ahead of time.
Just three sharp raps that made everyone in the house freeze with alarm.
"Expecting company?" Magnus asked quietly, his hand moving instinctively toward the weapon concealed under his jacket.
"Not from him."
Through the window, I could see Cassius standing on our porch in full military dress uniform. Behind him were two other soldiers, also in uniform, their posture suggesting this was official business rather than a social call.
"Should we pretend we're not home?" Kael suggested.
"No. If he's here, he already knows we're here."
I opened the door with my most politely neutral expression. "General Cassius. What can I do for you?"
"Ms. Martinez. I'm here on official Council business."
"What kind of official business?"
"The kind that requires immediate resolution." He pulled an official-looking document from his jacket pocket. "May we come in?"
"Of course."
I led him into the living room, where Victor and Elena were waiting with carefully controlled expressions. Kael positioned himself slightly behind me, close enough to intervene if necessary.
"Please, have a seat," I offered.
"This isn't a social call, Ms. Martinez. I'll stand."
"Suit yourself. What's this official business you mentioned?"
General Cassius unfolded the document, scanning it briefly before looking at me with cold authority. "By order of the Supernatural Regulation Council, you are hereby required to renounce your position as Luna of the Shadow Moon Pack and submit to Council custody for evaluation of your supernatural abilities."
The room went dead silent.
"Excuse me?" I said finally.
"You heard me correctly. The Council has determined that your recent power developments pose a potential threat to supernatural community stability."
"What power developments?"
"Enhanced lunar connection, energy manipulation, prophetic abilities, and influence over other supernatural beings." He consulted the document again. "All of which have been reported to the Council by concerned community members."
"Reported by whom?"
"That information is classified."
I felt anger beginning to build in my chest like a physical pressure. "Let me understand this correctly. Someone has been spying on my family, reporting my private activities to the Council, and now you want me to give up my position and submit to custody based on those reports?"
"The Council doesn't want you to do anything, Ms. Martinez. The Council is ordering you to comply with supernatural regulation protocols."
"And if I refuse?"
"Then you'll be arrested for violation of supernatural community safety standards and held indefinitely pending full evaluation."
Kael stepped forward. "General, with all due respect, Lyra hasn't committed any crimes. Her abilities are natural expressions of her celestial wolf heritage."
"Heritage that has remained dormant for decades until now. The sudden activation of such powerful abilities during a politically sensitive time period raises legitimate security concerns."
"Security concerns for whom?"
"For everyone in the supernatural community who could be affected by uncontrolled celestial wolf powers."
Victor spoke for the first time. "General Cassius, what specific evidence do you have that Lyra's abilities pose a threat to anyone?"
"Evidence of energy surges that have been detected as far as ten miles from this location. Evidence of supernatural influence over other werewolves, including Pack leadership. Evidence of communication with entities from other planes of existence."
"All of which are normal for celestial wolves."
"Normal for celestial wolves who have undergone proper training and Council certification. Ms. Martinez has received no such training."
I felt my enhanced abilities responding to my emotional state. The air around me began to shimmer with barely contained energy.
"And how exactly am I supposed to receive training if you're planning to lock me up for having the abilities that need training?"
"Council custody includes access to appropriate educational resources."
"Council custody sounds like prison with better public relations."
General Cassius's expression didn't change. "Ms. Martinez, you have twenty-four hours to comply with this order. If you haven't reported to Council headquarters by noon tomorrow, a warrant will be issued for your arrest."
"On what charges?"
"Reckless endangerment of the supernatural community through uncontrolled power manifestation."
The legal language was impressive, but the underlying message was clear. Submit or be destroyed.
"General, can I ask you something?"
"What?"
"Who benefits from removing me from my position as Luna?"
"The supernatural community benefits from having potentially dangerous individuals properly supervised."
"That's not what I asked. Who specifically benefits from my removal?"
"I'm not here to discuss political implications, Ms. Martinez. I'm here to deliver an official order."
"Political implications like the fact that removing me would destabilize the Shadow Moon Pack's alliance with other supernatural groups?"
"Ms. Martinez—"
"Or like the fact that removing me would eliminate one of the few people capable of opposing certain Council policies?"
General Cassius folded the document and put it back in his pocket. "Twenty-four hours, Ms. Martinez. Comply or face arrest."
"And my pregnancy? What happens to my unborn child if I'm in Council custody?"
"Appropriate medical care will be provided."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only answer you're going to get."
He turned to leave, but I called after him. "General, one more question."
"What?"
"When you arrest me tomorrow, are you planning to come alone?"
His expression shifted slightly. "Why would you ask that?"
"Because arresting a pregnant celestial wolf whose abilities are still developing might require more than three soldiers."
"The Council is prepared for any contingency."
"I'm sure they are. But are you prepared for the possibility that I might not be the most dangerous member of my family?"
General Cassius looked around the room, taking in Victor's barely controlled rage, Kael's protective posture, and Magnus's obvious readiness for violence.
"Threats, Ms. Martinez?"
"Observations. You're asking me to abandon my family during a time when they're being systematically targeted by unknown enemies. That's not going to happen."
"It's not a request."
"And my refusal isn't negotiable."
We stared at each other for a long moment. Two people representing incompatible positions, neither willing to back down.
"Twenty-four hours," he said finally, and walked out of the house with his soldiers following.
The moment the door closed behind them, everyone started talking at once.
"They can't arrest you for being pregnant with a powerful child," Elena said indignantly.
"They can arrest her for anything they want if they control the legal system," Magnus replied grimly.
"We need to accelerate our timeline for finding Isabella," Victor said. "If Lyra is going to be in Council custody, she won't be able to help with the rescue."
"I'm not going into Council custody," I said quietly.
Everyone stopped talking and looked at me.
"Lyra—" Kael started to say.
"No. I'm not abandoning my family, my position, or my unborn child because some bureaucrats decided my abilities make them uncomfortable."
"What are you suggesting?"
"I'm suggesting we leave. Tonight, before General Cassius comes back with his warrant."
"Leave for where?"
"For wherever we need to go to rescue my mother and deal with Malachar."
"That could take weeks."
"Then we stay gone for weeks."
Victor looked troubled. "Lyra, running from the Council will make you a fugitive."
"Being arrested by the Council will make me a prisoner. I prefer fugitive."
"What about Asher? What about your life here?"
I thought about my son, my home, the normal life I'd been trying to build.
"My life here doesn't matter if my family isn't safe. And Asher will be safer with parents who are free to protect him than with a mother who's locked up in Council custody."
Kael moved to stand beside me. "If you run, I run with you."
"Kael—"
"We're mates, Lyra. Partners. You don't get to face this alone."
Magnus nodded approvingly. "I'm in too. Always wanted to piss off the Council anyway."
Victor and Elena looked at each other, having one of their wordless married couple conversations.
"We're too old to be fugitives," Elena said finally.
"But we're not too old to help our daughter disappear safely," Victor added.
I felt tears prick my eyes. "You'd do that for me?"
"Honey, we'd do anything for you. The question is, where do we go that the Council can't find us?"
I thought about everything we'd learned about Malachar, about the cave system where Isabella was probably being held, about the goddess gem fragments that could mask supernatural signatures.
"We go to the one place where the Council's tracking abilities won't work."
"Which is?"
"Malachar's stronghold. We rescue Mom, neutralize the Ashwalkers, and hide in the one location that's already shielded from supernatural detection."
"That's incredibly dangerous."
"Everything is incredibly dangerous now. At least this way, we're choosing our own risks instead of letting other people choose them for us."
I looked around the room at my family, my mate, my closest ally. People who were willing to give up their comfortable lives to help me protect the people I loved.
"We leave in six hours," I said. "Pack light, bring weapons, and prepare for the possibility that we won't be coming home for a very long time."
"And if we can't rescue Isabella?"
"Then we'll have tried. Which is more than anyone else has done for the past twenty-two years."
Victor nodded slowly. "Isabella would approve. She never did like people who tried to control her."
"Then let's go get her back."
General Cassius thought he was forcing me to choose between my family and my freedom.
He was about to learn that some choices aren't really choices at all.
