Luna. Chapter 123

(Lyra's POV)

And we were family, all of us, in every way that mattered.

The automatic doors slid open as we approached the main entrance. Magnus walked beside me in comfortable silence, his presence steady and reassuring.

Outside, the evening air was cool against my skin. I breathed deeply, trying to center myself after everything that had happened over the past few hours.

"Lyra," Magnus said quietly as we reached his car. "I need to tell you something."

I turned to face him. His expression was serious but not unkind.

"I know you don't love me the way I love you."

The words hung between us. I wanted to protest, to soften the blow somehow, but Magnus held up his hand.

"Let me finish. I know you care about me. I know you trust me. I know you're grateful for everything I've done for you and Asher. But I also know that when you look at me, you don't see the love of your life."

My chest tightened. "Magnus—"

"And that's okay." His voice was gentle, understanding. "I made my choice when I claimed you at that rejection ceremony. I knew what I was getting into. I knew your heart belonged to someone else."

"That doesn't make it fair to you."

"Life isn't fair. If it was, you would have had a mate who treasured you from the beginning. You would have been loved the way you deserve to be loved. You would never have been hurt the way Kael hurt you."

I felt tears prick at the corners of my eyes. "I do love you. Maybe not the way you want, but I do love you."

"I know. And that's enough for me. It has to be."

We stood there in the hospital parking lot, two people who had found each other in the wreckage of broken dreams and tried to build something real from the pieces.

"So where does that leave us?" I asked.

"Partners. Co-parents. Best friends who happen to be married." Magnus smiled, and for the first time in weeks, it reached his eyes. "I'm not going anywhere, Lyra. Not unless you tell me to."

"I would never tell you to go."

"Then we'll figure it out. All of it. Together."

"What about the Ashwalkers?"

Magnus's expression hardened. "We stop them. Whatever it takes."

"They're not going to give up easily."

"Neither are we. And now that Kael is on our side instead of working against us, we actually have a chance."

I thought about everything that had changed over the past few days. The revelations about Kael's true motivations, the restoration of our mate bond, the growing threat against our son.

"Do you trust him?" I asked. "Really trust him?"

Magnus considered this carefully. "I trust that he loves you and Asher more than his own life. I trust that he'll do anything to protect you both. Whether I trust him not to hurt you again..." He shrugged. "That's between you and him."

"Fair enough."

"But Lyra, if you decide to give him another chance, I won't stand in your way."

My breath caught. "What do you mean?"

"I mean I'll step back. I'll release you from our bond. I'll give you the freedom to choose what you really want instead of what circumstances forced on you."

"Magnus, no. I can't ask you to do that."

"You're not asking. I'm offering." He stepped closer, taking my hands in his. "You saved my life by accepting my claim three years ago. You gave me a family, a purpose, something worth fighting for. You helped me become a better man, a better Alpha."

"You did those things yourself."

"With your support. With your friendship. With your presence in my life showing me what real strength looks like."

I was crying now, tears sliding down my cheeks as I looked at this incredible man who had given me everything and asked for so little in return.

"But what about you? What about your happiness?"

"My happiness comes from seeing you happy. From seeing Asher grow up safe and loved. From knowing that I played a part in protecting something precious."

"That's not enough for a lifetime."

"It's enough for now. And who knows? Maybe someday I'll find someone who looks at me the way you look at Kael when you think no one is watching."

Heat flooded my cheeks. "I don't—"

"You do. And that's okay. Like I said, I knew what I was signing up for."

We stood there holding hands in the gathering darkness, two people who had built something real from the ashes of broken dreams.

"I need time," I said finally. "To figure out what I want. What's best for Asher. What's best for all of us."

"Take all the time you need. I'm not going anywhere."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

As we drove home through the quiet streets, I felt something shift inside me. The fear and uncertainty that had been my constant companions for months were still there, but they were joined by something else now.

Hope.

Maybe we could find a way through this. Maybe we could protect Asher from the threats closing in around us. Maybe we could build something good from the broken pieces of our lives.

Maybe, just maybe, everything would be okay.

One way or another, we'll face whatever comes together.

The thought came from Aria, and I felt the truth of it settle into my bones.

Together. All of us. Whatever that looked like.

Together, we were strong enough to face anything.
