Luna. Chapter 55
(Lyra's POV)
The birthday party was perfect. Pack members had gathered in the garden behind the Moonlight Pack house, with fairy lights strung between the trees and a table loaded with my favorite foods. Asher stayed close to my side, his small hand occasionally reaching for mine when he sensed my nervousness.
As the sun set, I felt the pull growing stronger. Something deep in my bones calling to the rising moon.
"It's time," Derek said quietly.
The pack formed a circle around me in the clearing where Emma and I used to play as children. This was where generations of our family had experienced their first shift. Where my mother had transformed for the first time, where Derek had found his wolf, where my grandmother had passed down the stories of our celestial bloodline.
"I'm scared," I whispered to Magnus, who was standing beside me.
"Fear is normal," he said gently. "Transformation always involves a kind of death. The death of who you were before."
"What if I can't do it?"
"Then we'll wait until you're ready. But Lyra?" Magnus smiled. "I don't think readiness is your problem."
The moon reached its peak, and suddenly pain shot through every nerve in my body. Not the sharp pain of injury, but something deeper. Something fundamental shifting at the cellular level.
"Mama!" Asher called out in alarm.
"I'm okay, baby," I managed, though I wasn't sure I was.
The pain intensified, accompanied by a stretching sensation as my bones began to lengthen and reshape. My skin felt too tight, my muscles cramping as they reorganized themselves.
And then, suddenly, I wasn't alone in my own head anymore.
Hello, Lyra.
The voice was warm, ancient, infinitely patient. My wolf.
Hello, I thought back. I'm sorry it took so long.
You weren't ready before. You are now.
The transformation completed in a rush of silver light that made everyone in the clearing step back. When it faded, I was standing on four legs, looking out at the world through eyes that could see colors I'd never noticed before.
My name is Aria, my wolf said. And we have a lot of work to do.
I padded over to where Asher was watching with wide eyes.
"Hi, Aria," he said calmly. "I've been waiting to meet you too."
My wolf lowered her head so he could touch her muzzle. The contact sent a warm pulse through both of us.
He's special, Aria observed. Even more than we knew.
Looking at my son through wolf eyes, I could see the shimmer of power around him. Not just supernatural abilities, but something that looked almost like starlight woven through his aura.
What is he?
The bridge between what was and what will be. Our job is to protect him until he's ready.
Ready for what?
To change everything.
