Luna. Chapter 47

(Kael's POV)

The King's terms echoed in my mind as I climbed the stairs toward Lyra's voice. Iron Claw Pack under permanent Council supervision. My authority as Alpha reduced to a puppet position.

Twenty-three years of building, leading, protecting – all gone.

But then Lyra cried out again, and I knew I'd make the same choice a thousand times over.

Dr. Elena met me at the top of the stairs, her expression tense. "Alpha Blackwood, this isn't appropriate—"

"That's my child being born in there. Nothing could be more appropriate."

"Lyra specifically said she didn't want—"

"What Lyra wants and what she needs might be different things right now."

Another cry from behind the closed door, followed by Derek's voice saying something I couldn't make out.

"How bad is it?" I asked Dr. Elena.

"The baby is in distress. Heart rate is irregular, and Lyra's blood pressure is elevated. I think the stress of the federal siege is affecting the labor."

"What do you need?"

"I need her calm. I need her safe. And I need medical equipment we don't have here."

"The federal agents have mobile medical units outside."

"Equipment designed for capturing and containing supernatural beings, not delivering babies safely."

Magnus appeared beside me, his face grim. "Morrison's on the radio demanding immediate surrender. He says they'll breach in twenty minutes if we don't comply."

"Council enforcement?"

"Still thirty minutes out."

The math was terrible. Morrison's people would be inside the packhouse before help arrived.

"There has to be another way," I muttered.

"There is." Sebastian's voice came from behind us. "But you're not going to like it."

"Tell me."

"We surrender Lyra to them voluntarily."

"Absolutely not."

"Listen to me. If she's in federal custody when she gives birth, Morrison gets what he wants anyway. But if we surrender her voluntarily, we can negotiate terms."

"What kind of terms?"

"Medical supervision by our people. Dr. Elena attends the birth. We maintain visiting rights."

"That's not protection, that's collaboration."

"It's buying time."

Lyra's voice rose again, but this time it wasn't pain – it was anger.

"Where is he?" she was saying. "Where's Kael?"

My heart stopped.

"She's asking for you," Derek called through the door.

I didn't hesitate. Whatever our relationship problems, whatever hurt lay between us, she wanted me there. That was enough.

I pushed into the room to find Lyra propped up against pillows, her face flushed with exertion and determination. She looked beautiful and terrifying and completely magnificent.

"You came," she said when she saw me.

"Of course I came."

"Even with federal agents surrounding the building?"

"They can't stop me from being here for our child's birth."

"Our child." She smiled despite the pain. "You believe me now."

"I believe you. I should have believed you from the beginning."

"Kael..." She reached for my hand as another contraction hit. "I'm scared."

"I know. But you're not alone."

"The federal agents want to take the baby."

"They won't. I promise you that."

"How can you promise that?"

"Because I've called in help. Real help."

Dr. Elena checked her monitors and frowned. "The baby's heart rate is dropping again. We need to deliver soon or risk serious complications."

"What do you need from me?" I asked.

"Keep her calm. Keep her focused. And be ready to hold your child."

Another contraction, stronger than the others. Lyra gripped my hand so tightly I thought she might break bones.

"I can't do this," she gasped.

"Yes, you can. You're the strongest person I know."

"I hurt too much."

"The pain means it's almost over. Our baby is almost here."

"Promise me something."

"Anything."

"If Morrison's people take me, if something happens to me, you protect our child."

"Nothing's going to happen to you."

"Promise me anyway."

"I promise. But Lyra, I also promise that I'm not going to let anyone take either of you."

"How?"

"By giving up everything else that matters."

She looked at me with confusion, but another contraction took her attention.

From downstairs came the sound of amplified voices. Morrison's people making their final demands.

"Five minutes," Magnus called up. "They're saying five minutes until breach."

"The baby's crowning," Dr. Elena announced. "Lyra, I need you to push on the next contraction."

Everything after that became a blur of pain and effort and desperate hope. Lyra pushed with strength I didn't know she possessed while I tried to anchor her to something beyond the fear.

"I can see the head!" Dr. Elena said excitedly.

"One more push," I told Lyra. "Our baby wants to meet us."

She bore down with everything she had, and suddenly the room filled with the most beautiful sound I'd ever heard.

A baby crying.

"It's a boy," Dr. Elena announced, holding up a tiny, perfect human being.

My son. Our son.

"He's beautiful," Lyra breathed, tears streaming down her face.

Dr. Elena quickly cleaned and wrapped the baby, then placed him in Lyra's arms.

"Asher," Lyra said immediately. "His name is Asher."

"Asher Blackwood," I agreed, touching one tiny hand with my finger.

He was perfect. Ten fingers, ten toes, a strong cry that suggested healthy lungs. Dark hair like his mother's, but something in his features that reminded me of my own father.

"Alpha Blackwood!" Morrison's voice boomed from downstairs. "You have sixty seconds to bring the woman and child down voluntarily!"

"They're coming," Lyra said, panic creeping into her voice.

"Let them come," I said, standing up. "They'll have to go through me first."

"Kael, you can't fight the federal government."

"I can try."

"Not by yourself."

"Not by myself," I agreed, hearing the sound of helicopters that didn't belong to Morrison.

Council enforcement had arrived.

The sound of gunfire erupted from outside – not an assault, but warning shots and commands to stand down.

"Alpha King Adrian," I heard over loudspeakers. "Federal agents, withdraw immediately or face charges of violating supernatural sovereignty laws."

"What's happening?" Lyra asked.

"I called the cavalry."

"What did it cost?"

I looked at her holding our son, at the family I'd thrown away and now had a chance to protect properly.

"Everything. And it was worth every bit of it."

The gunfire outside stopped. Voices calling retreat orders. The federal vehicles starting up and pulling away.

"They're leaving," Magnus reported from the window.

I sank into the chair beside Lyra's bed, the adrenaline finally leaving my system.

"We're safe?" she asked.

"You're safe."

"What about you?"

"I'll figure that out later."

Lyra studied my face, seeing something there that made her frown.

"What did you give up to call for help?"

"Lyra..."

"Tell me."

I looked at our son, sleeping peacefully in her arms. "Iron Claw Pack. My independence as an Alpha. My territorial rights."

"You gave up your pack? For us?"

"It was the right choice."

"Kael..."

"No regrets. Not about this."

She reached for my hand with her free hand. "Thank you."

"You don't need to thank me for protecting our family."

"Is that what we are? A family?"

I looked at her, at our son, at the future I desperately wanted but wasn't sure I deserved.

"I hope so. If you'll let me try to earn that."

"It won't be easy."

"I know."

"You hurt me. Badly."

"I know that too."

"But..." She smiled through her tears. "You also just sacrificed everything to keep us safe. That has to count for something."

Outside, the Council enforcement officers were securing the perimeter and establishing a buffer zone between us and any federal interference.

Inside, our son slept in his mother's arms while his parents tried to figure out how to build a family from the ruins of everything they'd broken.

It wasn't perfect. It wasn't going to be easy.

But it was a start.
