Luna. Chapter 152

(Kael's POV)

We were discussing logistics for accelerating our timeline when Lyra suddenly went very still.

"Kael," she said quietly.

"What is it?"

"I think... I think I felt the baby move."

I froze, my hand automatically moving to her stomach. "Just now?"

"It's so early, I wasn't sure if it was real or just wishful thinking. But..." She placed her hand over mine. "There. Did you feel that?"

I waited, holding my breath, and then—there. The faintest flutter against my palm, so light I might have imagined it except for the wonder in Lyra's eyes.

"Our baby," I whispered.

"Our daughter, if Asher is right."

"She's real. This is really happening."

"Were you having doubts?"

"Not doubts exactly. More like... difficulty processing that something this good could be happening in the middle of something this terrible."

Lyra laughed softly. "Life doesn't pause for political crises. Children don't wait for convenient timing."

"No, they don't." I kept my hand pressed against her stomach, hoping to feel that flutter again. "Lyra, I need to tell you something."

"What?"

"When this is over, when our family is safe, I want to do this right."

"Do what right?"

"Everything. The pregnancy, the birth, raising two children together, being married to you." I met her eyes. "I want the life we talked about before everything went crazy."

"What if we can't have that life? What if the war changes everything?"

"Then we'll build a new life. But we'll build it together, as a family, without constantly looking over our shoulders."

"You make it sound so simple."

"It is simple. It's just not easy."

Lyra shifted position, getting more comfortable against my side. "Kael, there's something I've been thinking about."

"What?"

"Names. For the baby."

"It's a little early for that, isn't it?"

"Maybe. But if Asher is right, if we're having a daughter, I want her to have a name that means something. Something that represents what we're fighting for."

"What did you have in mind?"

"I was thinking... Hope. Hope Blackwood."

The name hit me like a physical blow, so perfect and so painful at the same time.

"Hope," I repeated.

"Too obvious?"

"Perfect. Absolutely perfect."

"Because she is our hope. For the future, for the family we want to build, for proof that love can create beautiful things even in dark times."

I kissed the top of her head, overwhelmed by the rightness of it. "Hope Blackwood. Our daughter."

"Our daughter who's going to grow up free. Who's going to know her big brother and her parents and her pack. Who's going to have the childhood we're fighting to give them both."

"That's a lot of pressure for someone who hasn't even been born yet."

"She's already handling pressure. She's been through attacks and threats and stress levels that would overwhelm most adults."

"Like her mother."

"Like both her parents."

We sat in comfortable silence for a while, my hand still resting on Lyra's stomach, both of us lost in thoughts of the future we were trying to protect.

"Kael?" Lyra said eventually.

"Yeah?"

"When we tell Asher about the baby's name, he's going to love it."

"Why?"

"Because hope is what he's been holding onto through all of this. Hope that his family will be safe, that the bad people will go away, that he'll get to be a big brother."

"He's going to be an amazing big brother."

"He's going to be protective and loving and probably a little overwhelming."

"Just like his father."

"Just like both his parents."

My phone buzzed with a text from Derek. "Security update. All clear for the night."

"Good," Lyra said. "I was hoping we could have one peaceful evening before we launch into whatever comes next."

"What do you want to do with our peaceful evening?"

"I want to plan our daughter's nursery. I want to talk about what kind of parents we want to be. I want to pretend, just for a few hours, that we're a normal family expecting a normal baby."

"That sounds perfect."

And it was. For the next few hours, we lost ourselves in conversation about cribs and color schemes, about lullabies and bedtime stories, about all the ordinary magic of raising a child.

We talked about how to help Asher adjust to being a big brother, about the traditions we wanted to establish as a family of four, about the values we wanted to instill in both our children.

"Promise me something," Lyra said as we were getting ready for bed.

"Anything."

"Promise me that no matter what happens in the next few days, no matter how dangerous things get, we'll remember this feeling."

"What feeling?"

"This feeling of being excited about our future. This feeling of choosing hope over fear."

"I promise. But only if you promise me something too."

"What?"

"Promise me that if things go wrong, if we don't all make it through this, you'll still choose hope. For the children, for yourself, for the future we wanted to build."

"Kael—"

"Promise me. Because Hope Blackwood deserves to grow up knowing that her parents believed in the possibility of good things, even when everything seemed impossible."

Tears were streaming down her face now. "I promise. But you have to promise me we're all going to make it through this."

"I promise we're going to fight like hell to make it through this."

"That's not the same thing."

"It's the only promise I can make and still be honest."

"Then it'll have to be enough."

I pulled her close, feeling the warmth of her body, the steady beat of her heart, the subtle presence of our unborn daughter growing between us.

Tomorrow, we would launch into the most dangerous phase of our fight against the royal family. We would risk everything we had to protect everything we loved.

But tonight, we were just Kael and Lyra Blackwood, expecting their second child and planning for a future full of hope.

And somehow, that felt like the most important thing in the world.
