Luna. Chapter 13
(Lyra's POV)
The celebration around me felt like a dream. Cheers and congratulations echoed through the hall, but I could barely process them. My hand went instinctively to the silver circlet on my head - it felt foreign, heavy with responsibility I wasn't sure I was ready for.
Magnus stayed close as pack members approached to offer their respects. Each handshake, each "congratulations, Luna" felt surreal. Just hours ago, I'd been a rejected mate with nowhere to go. Now I was Luna of Mountain Cross Pack.
"How are you feeling?" Magnus asked quietly during a brief lull in the well-wishers.
"Overwhelmed," I admitted. "Good overwhelmed, I think. But still overwhelmed."
"That's normal." His dark eyes were kind. "Being Luna is never easy, even under the best circumstances."
Before I could respond, Beta Harrison approached with a grim expression. "Alpha, Luna, we have a situation. Iron Claw Pack has sent another messenger."
My hand get wet. "Already?"
Harrison handed Magnus a sealed envelope. "This one came with an escort. They're waiting for a response."
Magnus broke the seal and read quickly, His anger increased with each line. When he finished, he sneered at it with disdain.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Seraphina is demanding immediate recognition of her Luna's wish by all neighboring packs. She's threatening to consider non-compliance as an act of hostility toward Iron Claw."
"She's trying to force everyone to choose sides," I realized.
"She is. But she's also made a critical error." Magnus handed me the letter. "She's escalating this into a formal pack dispute rather than keeping it as a personal rejection matter."
I scanned the aggressive language of the letter, noting the threatening tone. This wasn't the soft, vulnerable woman who'd claimed to need protection. This was someone showing her true colors.
"What do we do?"
"We respond with your Luna's wish. Officially." Magnus turned to Harrison. "Prepare a formal response. Luna Lyra exercises her right to counter-request, invoking ancient protection laws for pregnant females."
"And if they refuse?"
"Then they'll be breaking laws older than any of our packs." Magnus's smile was sharp. "Laws that the Council of Alphas still enforces."
As Harrison hurried away, I felt fear and determination settling in my chest. This was really happening. I was really fighting back.
"Magnus," I said quietly. "What if I'm not strong enough for this?"
His certainty was absolute. “You are. You’ve already proven that by surviving everything they put you through."
The celebration continued around us, but I could see the undercurrent of tension. Pack members kept glancing toward the main entrance where Iron Claw's messenger waited. Everyone understood that this was more than just a ceremony now.
This was war.
Three hours later, the hall had mostly cleared. I sat in Magnus's study, still wearing the white dress and silver circlet, watching him draft responses to the various pack leaders who'd witnessed the ceremony.
"Most of them will support your Luna's wish," he said, sealing another envelope. "The protection laws are deeply ingrained in pack culture. Even Alphas who might personally dislike the politics won't dare violate them publicly."
"But Seraphina won't give up easily."
"No, she won't." Magnus set down his pen and looked at me directly. "Lyra, you need to understand something. By accepting Luna status and challenging her publicly, you've made yourself a target. She'll come after you with everything she has."
"I know." I touched my belly, feeling the baby move restlessly. "But what choice did I have? Let her drive me away from any chance of safety?"
"None. You made the right choice." Magnus moved to the window, looking out at the mountain lake that reflected the moon. "But the right choice isn't always the easy choice."
A soft knock interrupted us. Sarah entered with a tea service, her expression motherly and concerned.
"You should rest, Luna," she said gently. "This has been an tired day."
"Sarah's right," Magnus agreed. "Tomorrow will bring new challenges. You'll need your strength."
As I stood to leave, Magnus caught my hand gently. "Lyra?"
"Yes?"
"Thank you. For trusting me with this. For choosing to fight rather than run."
"Thank you for trusting me."
I made my way back to my suite.
The baby kicked strongly as I changed into nightclothes, and I placed both hands on my belly.
"Well, little one," I whispered. "Your mama just became a Luna. No idea what I'm doing, but I promise I'll figure it out."
Through my window, I could see lights in the distance - the direction of Iron Claw territory. Somewhere out there, Kael was probably just learning about my Luna ceremony. Somewhere out there, Seraphina was planning her next move.
But here, in this mountain sanctuary, I was safe. Protected. Respected.
For the first time in weeks, I felt like I could breathe again.
Tomorrow would bring whatever storm Seraphina wanted to unleash. Tonight, I was Luna Lyra of Mountain Cross Pack.
No one could take that away from me.
