Luna. Chapter 48
(Kael's POV)
The formal ceremony took place three days later in the Council chambers. I stood before Alpha King Adrian and the assembled Council of Alphas, wearing my best suit like it was funeral attire.
In a way, it was.
"Alpha Kael Blackwood," Adrian's voice carried the weight of centuries of tradition. "You have requested Council intervention in exchange for territorial concessions. Do you understand the permanent nature of these concessions?"
"I do."
"State for the record what you are relinquishing."
"Independent leadership of Iron Claw Pack. Territorial sovereignty. The right to make unilateral decisions affecting pack welfare." Each word felt like losing a piece of myself. "I accept appointment as Council Supervisor for Iron Claw territory, serving at the pleasure of this Council."
"And in exchange?"
"Complete Council protection for Lyra Blackwood and our son Asher. Federal immunity from supernatural weapons programs. Guaranteed safety for all members of Moonlight Pack who aided in their protection."
"The terms are acceptable."
Adrian stood, his ceremonial robes making him look more like a judge than an Alpha.
"By the power vested in this Council, I hereby dissolve the independent status of Iron Claw Pack and place all territorial assets under Council supervision. Alpha Kael Blackwood is appointed as Council Supervisor, maintaining limited administrative authority subject to Council oversight."
The gavel came down with finality.
Twenty-three years of building, gone in a single decision.
"Congratulations, Supervisor Blackwood," Adrian said afterward, his tone almost sympathetic. "You've made the right choice."
"Have I?"
"You've chosen family over power. That's always the right choice."
"Even if it means I can't protect them the way I used to?"
"You'll protect them differently now. With the full authority of the Council behind you."
I drove back to Iron Claw territory – former Iron Claw territory – wondering how to explain to my pack that their Alpha had essentially sold them to save his ex-wife.
The pack meeting was brutal.
"You did what?" Elena stared at me in disbelief.
"I traded our independence for federal protection."
"Without consulting us?"
"There wasn't time."
"There's always time for pack input on decisions this big," Marcus said angrily.
"Not when federal agents are threatening to kidnap pregnant women for experimentation."
"Luna Lyra isn't our responsibility anymore."
The words hit like a slap, even though I understood the sentiment.
"She's the mother of my child. That makes her family."
"She rejected our pack when she left with Alpha Magnus."
"I rejected her first. This is me taking responsibility for that mistake."
"By destroying everything we've built together?"
I looked around at the faces of people I'd led for over two decades. Some angry, some disappointed, some just confused.
"You have every right to be furious with me," I said finally. "I made a unilateral decision that affects all of your lives."
"Damn right we're furious."
"But I won't apologize for protecting my family."
"Even at our expense?"
"Yes. Even at our expense."
Adrian, my former beta, stood up slowly.
"I need to understand something, Kael. If the situation arose again, if you had to choose between the pack and Lyra, what would you choose?"
The question hung in the air like a challenge.
"Her. Every time."
The silence that followed was deafening.
"Then maybe it's good that you're not our independent Alpha anymore," Adrian said quietly. "Because an Alpha who puts one person above his entire pack isn't fit to lead."
"Maybe not."
"What happens to us now?"
"You'll have new leadership appointed by the Council. Someone who can make decisions based on pack welfare instead of personal relationships."
"And you?"
"I'll serve in whatever capacity the Council assigns. But my priority will always be my family first."
"Then we understand each other."
The pack voted that night. Overwhelmingly, they requested new leadership as soon as the Council could provide it.
I couldn't blame them.
The next morning, I drove to Moonlight Pack to see Lyra and our son. The Council had established a security perimeter that kept federal agents at a safe distance, but I could feel their surveillance even from miles away.
I found Lyra in the garden behind the packhouse, sitting in a rocking chair with Asher sleeping against her chest. She looked up when she heard my footsteps.
"How did it go?"
"About as well as expected."
"They hate you."
"They have good reason to."
"No, they don't." Lyra shifted Asher carefully. "You protected innocent people from government overreach. That's exactly what an Alpha should do."
"I destroyed their independence to save my ex-wife. Most people wouldn't see that as good leadership."
"Most people don't understand love."
I sat on the garden bench across from her, studying our son's peaceful face.
"How are you feeling?"
"Physically? Much better. Emotionally? Confused."
"About what?"
"About us. About what you gave up. About what happens next."
"What do you want to happen next?"
"I want us to figure out how to be good parents together. Whether we're together or not."
"And the together part?"
"I don't know yet. You hurt me, Kael. Really badly. But you also just sacrificed everything to protect me and Asher."
"It wasn't really a choice."
"It was the biggest choice you could make. And you chose us."
Asher stirred in her arms, opening eyes that were already focusing with unusual alertness for a newborn.
"He's beautiful," I said.
"He's perfect. And he's going to be incredibly powerful."
"Like his mother."
"Like both his parents, probably."
I reached out tentatively to touch his tiny hand. He gripped my finger with surprising strength.
"What does Dr. Elena say about his development?"
"That he's developing faster than normal human babies. Not dangerously fast, but noticeably accelerated."
"The Sebastian bloodline?"
"And yours. He's going to inherit abilities from both sides."
"Which makes him even more of a target."
"Which makes him more protected. The Council has assigned permanent security to all of us."
I looked around the peaceful garden, noting the discrete positions of Council guards.
"Are you okay with living under protection?"
"I'm okay with living safely. For the first time since Seraphina showed up, I feel like we might actually have a future."
"What kind of future?"
"The kind where our son grows up knowing both his parents love him. The kind where we figure out how to be a family, even if that family doesn't look traditional."
"Lyra..."
"Yes?"
"I know I don't deserve forgiveness. I know I can't undo the pain I caused. But if you're willing to try, I want to spend every day proving I've learned from my mistakes."
She was quiet for a long time, rocking gently back and forth with our son.
"One day at a time," she said finally.
"One day at a time?"
"That's all I can promise right now. We take it one day at a time and see if we can rebuild trust."
"I'll take it."
"Good. Because Asher deserves parents who can work together."
As if summoned by his name, our son opened his eyes and looked directly at me. For a moment, I swear I saw intelligence there that seemed far beyond his three days of life.
"He's going to be extraordinary," I said.
"He already is."
A Council messenger approached the garden, maintaining a respectful distance.
"Supervisor Blackwood? Alpha King Adrian requests your presence for mission briefing."
"What kind of mission?"
"Security assessment. There have been additional federal inquiries about the Sebastian situation."
I looked at Lyra, who nodded.
"Go. We'll be here when you get back."
"Promise?"
"One day at a time, remember?"
As I walked away from the garden, I heard her singing softly to our son. A lullaby I didn't recognize, but one that sounded like home.
I'd given up everything I'd built over twenty-three years.
But looking back at Lyra and Asher in the morning sunlight, I knew I'd made the right choice.
Some things were worth more than power.
Some things were worth everything.
